I had a similar situation with contaminated manure several years ago, completely switched to everything that goes into my garden comes from my garden.
An easy safe manure are home raised worm castings, since last winter my worms have produced close to 500 pounds of castings, the vast majority of their food comes from my garden, mainly to provide a local biome in my castings. I have even read that composting worms can detoxify some persistent chemicals and heavy metals with the various enzymes in their gut, gotta love them worms.
Not only can you get contaminated manure or straw, I picked up some contaminated soil from a neighbor. I should have known when I did not see one earthworm when I was carting it away. I will have to take it out of the bed this fall and replace it.
I understand sunflowers, alfalfa and clover are pretty good at detoxifying contaminated soils.
    Excellent video Nate! Stay Well!!!!

I have chickens and rabbits and I ran into your problem with the rabbit manure when i was feeding them timothy hay they sell in cubes at Farm and Fleet. Changed over to organic hay. They also get gmo free feed and the chickens get the best feed i can grab my hands on. I put alot of wood chips in their run, and collect all that when it's broken down. I wet the run occasionally when it's hot outside to help in the decomposition of the wood chips. The coop bedding goes into the compost pile. Rabbit manure goes directly on the beds all year round as it is produced.

I started raising chickens for eggs and fertilizer this year and have purposefully fed them nothing but organic feed, wild berries, bugs, meat, organic homegrown produce and whatever they can forage. Excited to have a heap of rich composted chicken manure to incorporate into my garden for the first time this fall!

3 years ago I had ran into this same issue with a cow manure and had a large garden 60 feet by 110 feet. Some plants done ok and others didn't grow or fruit at all. I didn't garden in that spot at all last year and this year (spring) I created an entire new garden in a new location, other than the accessive rain fall the new garden was a success and everything done extremely well! No manure! But plenty of other organic natural amendments just like what you teach us here on your channel.

My niece added cow manure to their garden plot. They are new to gardening and had not heard about the herbicide residues. Their garden is pathetic as a result. We use no manure. We make liquid fertilizer with lawn clippings, some food scraps, and my own urine. Applied weekly at 30:1, on the soil only. No disease issues, great results. But it Stinks! We got used to the smell, and it fades by the next day.

A friend got contaminated manure a few years back. Fortunately he has enough land to start a new garden plot. We have chickens and cows that get organic feed so I’m glad to get as much manure from them as possible. I just made 25 gallons of biochar and charged it with manure and compost tea and lots of fish hydrolysate.

New gardener here. I worked so hard to set up garden beds in my new home. My favorite pastime the last few years was watching homesteaders and gardeners. My harvest was terrible. The only crop I had success with was jalapenos. I'm thinking it might have been the hay bales I purchased for mulching my beds 😕

Around August yhe tomatoes started to finally grow better and look more normal but the fruit is tiny and odd shaped and never matures.
My friend swears he never used any herbicides, and I believe him. Makes sense that it was in the hay he bought

Yes. I've had this issue setting up my many 20 gal raised bed tub garden. I used "organic" local composts produced here in PNW. Got skunked again this year with my trusted source. Company told me after I called and complained that they test 1X a year. 😢 Local garden center had huge fail with their professional seedling mix. Expensive. Can't trust mushroom compost cause up here a growing farm got contaminated straw and it got into the composting byproduct. I've gone to a compost to top my beds with no dairy manures, but all seem to have a lot of alfalfa and chicken product. I'm nervous now about my usual habit of spreading just horse pelleted alfalfa this fall and spring in ANY raised beds that may be direct seeded.

For that reason I’ve started worm farming the big way . I’ve converted 5 / 75 litre trash cans to worm farms. I feed them all the left over weeds with no roots and flowers . Etc . Etc.
The liquid I’m using for my plants . It works well , but takes a few years to build up the worm population . It’s a better end product than compost which I used to make the last 30 years in different ways .

There was a documentary on TV that the cow diet was change to improve their digestive system. However this backfire and created a discharge in the cow that affected plantations. It took almost three years to come to the conclusion that it was the new and improved food additives for the cows. But they did not reported the damege as soon as they saw the changes. As always silence is golden. Yes plantation were damage and the weather and the soil were to blame. The farmers lost their contracts. And as always we have to outsource to feed the people. Now people has lost the trust in the American Farmers.

Nate, this info is vital and part of a big big picture. See recent interviews with Casey Means MD and brother Calley Means, former big food lobbyist, for info from their perspective.
I’ve got a 10 sq ft area in my garden so affected. I’d added one bag of topsoil to a low spot. Stuff grows spindly and yellow, then dies. Digging out that area in a few days. I’m lucky it was so small, and you’re sharing info about it.

I watched another guy who had put manure on his garden from a farm and everything died, even the grass and he was bewildered, found out they fed grain during milking that was full of stuff (even other dead animals were being fed to the cows!) I have been wondering if I'm not having an issue of contamination. Not from what I've been putting on but coming from a neighbor. He has a few head of cattle, and feeds big round bails which he buys . I live down the hill and across the road from him. In heavy rains the water comes through a colbert to my garden spot. I'll try one more year, then possibly move spot. This had become a BIG problem for so many people. Around here, north west Missouri, noticed this year most of the farmers spraying hay fields and other crops. I'm not sure that most feeds are contaminated. The manufacturers of these products should be held accountable, or at least recognizing this problem and finding a solution. The meat products from these contaminated feeds would be questionable at best. Keep up the great work I've always enjoyed your guidance.

G'day Nate and fam. A few years ago i all of a sudden thought that i had gone from a good gardener to the worlds worst gardener in one season. I used to just buy the commercial seed and cutting raising mix, well a few years ago i couldn't get most seeds to germinate. And i just thought that i had become hoples at gardening and that i must have just lost my green thumb. This problem had not happened before but i persisted and for the next few years i continued to purchase the popular seed raising mix not realising that it could possibly have herbicide contamination. Now about five different people i have confirmed that it is indeed the seed raising mix from a big hardware store in Australia. This year i just sifted a few shovels of soil out of my gardens to get the big bits out, mixed in some of my own worm castings a low and behold, almost every seed has been sprouting like i haven't seen for many years now. I will never be buying seed raising mix again. Also most commercially available bagged garden soils and manures are from huge feed lots where the animals are fed bulk heavily sprayed feeds.
    Green love from Australia 💚🌲🌏🙏

I have been saying that for a while about manure, it's not worth the risk. I'm also not buying hay or alfalfa from a bag either. I do buy some bag compost from a company that supplies master gardeners in my area and even that's a risk but if they start killing master gardener gardens it would be bad for them so they hopefully take precautions.

I’m done too. I amended my green house with manure from animals who ate hay grown in 2020. 2024 and it’s still affecting my tomatoes and peppers. I put them in just to gage the damage. I’m adding fish emulsion and kelp fertilizer now. Probably going to grow a root crop or some corn in there next year along with my sacrificial tomato and pepper plant. It’s a shame. It’s the most accessible amendment in my area. Easy on the back too. I used to use the spoiled hay also to mulch garlic and to hill potatoes so that’s gone as well. It won’t be long and local hobby farmers with cows horses goats and whatnot will start feeling the burden too. They rely on folks coming by and taking their piles to use for fertilizer. How are they going to get rid of it now.

Thanks Nate, I've a friend that his girlfriend has 2 horses, they're her babies and treats them as such, he's got acres of land his dad left him and he doesn't use anything on it, he uses sheep and the horses to keep the grass down nothing else, I used that manure last year, I had no issues, I've got 8 chickens and I now feed them fermented grains and peas, beans, pasta and canned fish etc with ground up oyster shells mixed in and some sea kelp, the fermented grains have lactobacillus as I found out the pellets people feed them have soya and sodium chloride along with other nasties people don't realise are toxic, I should have good chicken manure but not enough to cover the vast space of the PSG, I've got compost areas that I throw the chicken poop in along with leaves, vegetable scraps and some JMS in every month then turn it over, it's great for the chickens to scratch about in looking for bugs too, by next year it should be good compost for the garden, I hope.

For anyone who already has a problem with this stuff in your garden, assuming you cant get ride of it, or move your garden. If you have enough space, the only things that aren't affected by these kind of things are grass. so you should still be able to grow corn, sugar cane, wheat, in those areas without a issue. if you would be comfortable eating crops from those areas, but at the same time, any waste from those crops CAN NOT be put into your compost bin or fed to livestock or you risk spreading it. I know its not the most ideal solution to grow corn in the same place for 3 years, but if you rely on your garden to feed you, it is a option.

The thing is, we put on our veggie garden to much manure too. In deed bizons fertilize the soil and pastures, but only grass grows there. They don't fertilize woods, but still trees grow taller than grass as they are fertilized by their own leaves (carbon). So if fertiliser (nitogen) is that good grass would grow taller than trees...
So if you want big veggies and big crops, then fertilise with much carbon and a little nitrogen... not the opposite.

This is all dealt with in the Netflix film Kiss The Ground. You all need to follow organic farming where the animals all eat the grass and pastures are left fallow. Once the cattle have eaten for a few days you move them to a new pasture and bring in the chickens to feed on what the cows have left.
The film highlights the current poor topsoil and the need for farmers to stop ploughing but drilling into the ground instead. This will help ensure that the maximum amount of carbon is stored in the earth and not in the atmosphere.
