Once again, you are the cat's pajamas, the bees' knees. I'm working in watercolor and will have to adapt some but you just saved me AGAIN. I'm starting a portrait of a friend's young daughter on a fishing trip she took with her dad. It's fall, it's cold in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia and his little sweetheart LOVES PINK! So here's this wee bit of a girl bundled up in this hot pink parka with all it's downy folds and I was thinking it's a little too overpowering, maybe I should change the color of the parka. (Translation: 😱 This is really intimidating, what the heck am I going to do?)
Well, I'm going with the pink. She IS pink. It's her personality. And the juxtaposition of her bubbly pink in the scene of her holding the fishing pole by the river is just too good to pass up. It takes it from Harry Anderson's boy going fishing with his dog to a whole new dimension of... 😅😂🤣 as yet to be defined. Thanks. I'm thinking if I had started painting before my late 60s, this would have been a great job to have.
Have fun with it. You might benefit by doing some practice studies on scrap watercolor paper. There you will feel free to vary proportions and degrees of wetness and discover nuances that you might not otherwise find.
First...I LOVE your videos!. I have learned so much and love your teaching method....Second...what kind of board is that? And third...I am so happy to see you offer your lessons as downloads. No broken dvds, no shipping issues and I can put them on usb and use them on my tablet and tv. Also, it doesnt take up space. So, I will be ordering ALL of them as budget permits. You are God given to aspiring artists like me. Fourth...lol...mind blown that pink was red orange...:) you always leave me with an EUREKA moment.

Ms. Dianne, I so appreciate your explanations and examples. Had you not isolated those two colors, I would have never believed the hue differences between the two. This will help so much with all my mixing. As a new painter I initially thought one should simply add black/dark in order to grey a color for shadows. When that didn’t work for me, I found videos explaining that one should add the compliment to darken colors for shadows, and while that was an improvement it still only works occasionally. Now thanks to your help, I know I may need to actually change the hue before adding the compliment for a grayer shadow. Thank you for sharing you knowledge and experience with us rookies.

Shadows are for me a great topic to study and practice because is so changeable and subtle. Before knowing your videos I did not know that a painter needs to think so much. I had the idea that with talent everything would magically arise rightly out from a misterious spot inside the genius mind. That was the justification to my flops, lacking of talent You shows a logical thinking process with clear steps that make all sense. It is eyes opening and it is changing my paintings are getting better and my mind clearer. Thank you so much.
Thanks for this, muhlenstedt. I think of talent as the desire, the drive towards creating. But even Michaelangelo spent hours studying the human anatomy. To my mind, he was feeding the artist. That "food" enabled the genius to create David. But without his knowing the mechanics of marble carving, that would never have happened. Learning the mechanics is ALSO feeding the artist.

Very useful tip for me. I also purchased and enjoyed your "Paint Like Sargent" lesson of using orange, blue and white for color harmony. I created a couple of paintings with that technique. It's fun and seems to be easier for me than when I have to calculate color from red, yellow, blue. Thanks for being such a great teacher.

Could you please, explain about how and when we need to use warm shadows and cool shadows when we try to get a good harmony with background and atmosphere painting. My question is, if the light is warm my shadows will need to be cool on the subject and the background too? Thank you
Generally, we will find in warm light, cooler shadows, and in cool light warmer shadows. But other things might effect the temperature, so depend upon your observation, not your expectation. Light does not change in a background, only the atmosphere changes how we see light influencing images.

It really should be stated that shadows will cool in outdoor light, as the cool sky acts as a 'fill light.' But indoors you often find the shadows get warmer, especially if there are warm elements, a wood floor for example will make the shadows in the entire room likely to be 'warmer.'
I prefer to use the hue rather than warm or cool terms as they are relative but that's getting picky ;)

Thanks for adding that, but keep in mind that these days, indoor lighting can vary in temperature, so observing to find the temp is better than making a rule about it.

Dianne. You said something here that made me wish for another quick tip! You said “I have a tube color that is red/orange which is cadmium red light.” My wish is that you’d do a QT which gives us ideas of which tube colors are which hues on the color wheel.(or visa versa). It seems that it should be obvious but it’s not for me! Thanks as always!

I know this is an old video, viewed 2023, but I just wanted to say, THANKS! I've been binge watching and I've learnt more about color in the last few weeks than in the last 20 years. It makes sense now and I cut my color wheel to resemble yours. :) ie. I got rid of the "noise" in the middle.

Excellent presentation and sophisticated use of the color wheel. Until this lesson I would not have thought to mix viridian into Alizarin to arrive at violet, but this method creates better unity and harmony. Are there properties in the Rembrandt brand of viridian which differ from other brands in neutralizing Alizeran and/or cad red?
Yes, Grant. The Rembrandt Viridian is totally transparent and dark, a characteristic which add a depth that most brands of Viridian can't match. Gamblin has a Viridian that is very close, but falls short of the potential in the Rembrandt brand.
Thanks so much for this - it's the most useful tip on painting I've heard in a long time. I have a question: when you mixed the shadow of the pink (red-orange), you added red-violet - essentially going counterclockwise on the color wheel. Is that a principle for outdoor shadows? Is it always counterclockwise? So, the shadow for a yellow would be to add Orange in the counterclockwise method? Or would you cool the yellow by adding green - clockwise on the wheel? Probably a silly question as it demonstrates my lack of color theory knowledge. You are absolutely terrific, love your channel and wisdom. Hope this finds you well. Scott
Scott, we might see the same shadow mix for indoors, depending upon what the light is doing, so the better way to think about it is that shadow colors always move towards their complement. Our job as artists is to observe how far they have moved and into what value.

You use the same principle of thinking, but adjust your technique to translate it into watercolor.
Hi, I have a question unrelated to the topic. I've seen dozens of your great videos and also bought a few full lessons, but I've never seen you use round brushes. I wonder if round brushes (of all sizes) are so unsuitable for what you paint or why you don't use them (I mean in oil)? Regards and thanks for everything I have learned from you and I will learn.
Thanks for asking that, Petra. It's simply that I don't relate to a round brush when painting in oils. I have found that filberts can do anything a round can do and more, so there's is no reason other than, even though other artists do well with them, I find them completely useless.

Hi, can you do a video on water soluble oils? I'm currently discovering them, I find them wonderful in many ways and I'm really curious what you might feel inspired to do with them.
Ana, I have never used water soluble oils, so I'm not qualified to do a a video on them. I know that for folks who are overly-sensitive to fumes, they work quite well, but I've never found any reason to use them.
Is this oil paint? and would the method work with acrylic and gouache?

Can you teach us to mix TURQUOISE ? I am living in Curacao (Dutch Caribbean) and our sea is so bright, but I can’t the bright fresh clear color of our sea.
Try some experiments by varying proportions of Rembrandt Viridian, Phthalo Blue and Ultramarine Blue along with Titanium White. You might also add one of the highly saturated yellows to the mix. AND among those turquoise colors, you might find that adding a bit of Alizarin Crimson to the blue/green mixtures will give you the deep darks you might see.

That hue doesn’t look right to me - I’d use just red - it looks too peach online to me
Perhaps it's your monitor. Monitors vary on how they interpret color.
