    Excellent, people need to know anyone can breed German Rams. I my self was afraid to even buy them after watching AC videos on how hard it was to keep and breed these beautiful little fish. I finally bought 3 German Rams this year and am on my second successful spawn, NO RO water, no sterile environment, they are as easy as guppies. These other people were just trying to keep the price up for their own pocket and not for the good of the hobby. I will be selling mine for $5 so people can enjoy them. Thank again

    I agree with every single thing you said. Especially not to buy a breeding pair. Bought 3 young GBR’s, they grew out to be 2 females and 1 male. 1 female got beat up. Took her out. The pair left in the rank hit it off splendidly and bred prolifically.

    Hi Father Fish, after being out the hobby for 30 years I decided to start again after watching your channel which I think is marvelous information. I made up a dirty tank as you explained in your videos and then added a few Cardinals and Panda Corys then went for Electric Blue Rams which to my amazement have laid eggs on the plant leaf so am going to remove the babies once they start to bob around and put in their own tank . Will keep you posted thankyou for you expertise and knowledge . Newcastle upon Tyne

    Thank you Father Fish for sharing this valuable information. I have a 30 gallon tank that has been set up for over 2 years now that has dirt and sand substrate 4 inches deep. It is planted 50 % with Vallisneria. I purchased 11 young nearly 1 inch German Blue Rams yesterday, from a local respected breeder. I have placed a dark flat smooth round stone about 4 to 5 inches wide in the front corner, with a terracotta pot for some cover. I will keep the tank at about 83 degrees F. I am feeding them Frozen Dapnia and Frozen Brine Shrimp. And also Tetra Color Granules and Tetra min Flakes (On different days and not all at once of course). I have started to see even at their small sizes Males starting to challenge each other and females just hanging around males to look around the tank for food. So I will just keep feeding them up for a month or two (if they don't start to breed by themselves first! Ha ha!). Once I see a pair form I will remove the other fish into another tank. Then like you say. (because I remember in the past just leaving fry in with parents, watching the fry eat and do well. Yet after each day the fry would just start disappearing for no good reason. Well that is what I used to think. But you have now made me aware of what was actually happening to them. And yes the parents would shortly after, spawn once again.) I will remove the day 1 free swimming fry to a smaller container to raise them separately from the parents! Micro Worms fist 3 days and then move them onto Baby Brine Shrimp.

    I bred my first celestial pearl danios. I havn't tried rams yet and I might. but the cpd's I breed them in plastic totes I put the parent tub up on a shelf in the fishroom, no extra light no filter no heater the room is warm enough. No disturbance for a few days at a time. The tubs don't have substrate because I change them and move things around but I do put in a heap of moss and some algea and leaves and some hornwort stuff that dosn't need much light I find they like dim lighting best and still calm water. I have a chinese container in the bottom with marbles and they spawn in that. Every few days I carefully lift it out take out the marbled gently and pour the water with whatever eggs are in it into another tote that does have light. And all I have in that one is shrimp to clean things up and leaves and a heap of moss and algae and its not filtered, it looks disgusting theres a tonne of mulm and detritus in there. I don't clean it change it nothing. There is live food in there. All I do every few days as I see more fry appear I take 1 or 2 at most micro pellets crush them to powder, put a tiny bit of that on my finger dip my finger in and out over the algea. Thats all I do. Theres more fry every day and they are growing with minimal input from me. When the oldest get big enough they could eat the newly hatched I will move them to a dirted planted tank. Thats my system its lazy simple and works. No chemicals no special filters no fussing no methalyne blue for the eggs I think the baby or small shrimp may clean the eggs. They don't eat them but they will eat bacteria and fungi and organisms growing on the eggs. I don't know for sure I have a feeling they have a role. lIt just works. I watch the tiny fry zip around eating and chasing things I cannot even see with a magnifying glass it's great I am so exited. They still cost $25 each in Australia the CPD's do so I am very happy to get them to finally breed.

    Great content but I have notice from first hand that GBR only consume their fry at the begining of their parental care. The first 1st or 2nd spawn is usually not viable without intervention (removal) from humans. My GBRs have spawned 6 or 7 times and now they have become better parents and keeping the fry for over 2 weeks. Eventually I will have to remove them to avoid predation.

    Good trick if you have a lot of fish putting pressure on the food web and young fish to feed. This changes everything. Get another tank or even a big tote tub. I use a lot of tubs they are light when empty and easy to move around if needed and cheap. This is just for making live food for fish. Set up the deep dirted substrate get some plants in, if your in a cold climate put a heater in if you need to room temp for this though still works but you get more food in a warm tank. so plant it up put some neo caridna shrimp in cherry shrimp. Not a lot you also get to breed shrimp out of this. Get some cheap shrimp low grade reds because if they breed a lot you can feed those too and see how good the fish colour gets! But put all the leaves in the bark the stuff and leave it alone. No water changes no cleaning nothing. lots of live food a rich supply will breed and increase in here rapidly chuck some fish food in every now and then to give it a boost. you can just take a turkey baster and suck some muck from the bottom and put it in the baby fish tank or any fish tank and it will have thousands of critters. This works so well you can set up as many of these feeder tanks as you need. it takes no more work from you once its set up except to keep the water topped off and if you dont heat it too much that will only be once a week or couple of weeks. Its too easy. it will feed baby bettas from day 1.

    • @Firebird894
      @Firebird894 Год назад +1

      it costs about $10 or so to set this up depending where you live and what you already have avaliable. the tub, some dirt I just use soil and clay from my own yard where its organic you just need to go out in nature to a creek or somewhere I dont even do that because no clean creeks around here but you can get free dirt and put that in then 2 inches of sand on top. Collect some wood and some rocks for the shrimp make a small pile of stones for the shrimp. And the plants if you have plants already just use cuttings of stem plants. You will never have to fuss and worry about feeding baby fish again once this gets going and the older it gets the better it gets.

    • @Firebird894
      @Firebird894 Год назад +1

      this tank will keep working the shrimp will be fine anywhere from around 16 degrees CELSIUS and up. if its colder than that the shrimp will be ok but the tank wont produce as much food. just set a heater to about 22c and that will not cost much in power

    I believe that a lot of the problems people have breeding these fish is chasing water parameters. The majority of videos on RUclips suggest having a very low TDS and a Ph around 6 or even lower. It is true that where they originate from, the Orinoco River the water is very low in dissolved solids and Ph can be as low as 5. I'm sure that if you collect these fish yourself from the Amazon Basin you would have to imitate these conditions just to keep them alive, let alone breed them. The point is that the fish that virtually everybody gets either from a breeder or their local fish store are probably 150 generations away from those originally collected back in the 1940's. If they are imported from fish farms they are certainly not bred in water even close to that found in South America. If you get them from a local breeder it is probable they were spawned in water similar to your own domestic water supply. The only water parameter that is critical is the temperature. Three times I tried to keep them at 75-76 and each time they just faded away and died. It was only when I raised the temperature to 82 that I had success.

    Father fish I have recently discovered your channel and absolutely love your detailed educational videos on fish keeping. They are such refreshing and thoughtful videos. I have a planted 75 gallon with GBRs 3 males and 3 females, 3 angels and 3 corys and a couple of the Germans have paired off and have claimed a corner. I am keeping my tank at about 83 - 84. If they produced eggs I was planning on siphoning them when they started swimming and putting them into a 15 gallon tank. Is it possible to use a tank as opposed to a jar? I’m guessing the big jar makes it much easier to keep the environment clean because you can siphon the bottom after feeding and do a full water change. Do you put a little heater in the jar? Is frozen daphnia ( I know I can get this) small enough for the fry? Thank you for your videos. I am learning so much. Sorry for my ignorance - I have only looked after African cichlid fry and Electric blue Acara fry .

    Any comments on hydrogen peroxide as an anti fungal? Also do you use RO water to lower hardness? Keep the lights on 24/7 for the first two weeks of wigglers and free swimming?

    I knew I should've tried to find a video you did about rams before I bought a male and female. In the 10 days I've had them they have murdered 22 fish! By day I swear no aggressive behavior but next morning there are bodies and I mean shredded up no eyes or fin! I separated them into a 30 and am just gonna try to breed them but screw these fish lol

    If I need more food I put tubs outside put water in load them up with sticks and leaves and dirt and big fistfulls of grass clippings, weeds I pull out I do not use poisons so it is all safe, and I put algae in the tub to get it going I put a lid on to keep the mozzies and dragonflies out because im culturing really tiny food. I let it marinate and stew for at least a week before I need it. I have big tubs of this gross mess haha it is full of tiny things the fry love and it costs me nothing. I have shrimp in every fry tank to clean up any uneaten food if theres no eggs I add snails. If I have eggs in the tub I do not add snails I just add shrimp. I get it going a week before I put any fry or eggs in. I have a huge clump of moss and algea and plants I tip the eggs directly onto and into that and I leave it alone and wait for the magic to happen and it does! It is the easiest method I have ever come up with and it works. You can add an airstone or sponge I don't usually I have at least 20L of water in there but I dont even put an airstone in what I notice the algea and moss forms a matt, The decaying plant matter and mulm produces I think Co2 I can't confirm what is actually happening but the moss has a lot of air bubbles and they burst under the algae matt and break the surface tension. I do not worry about a bit of film on the surface I just stir it now and then with a stick. The Shrimp are doing great so are the fry. If this was a bad idea they would not survive and they do and they grow. I have watched spawns of tadpoles and fish in the dirtiest ponds and puddles you have ever seen with no human intervention I watch this and pay attention and so I tried to do the same thing. But you must have living plant material in there as much as you can. I add a bit of the tub water from outside now and then to give it a boost of life. The eggs do not fungus the water is still I can sit and try to count the fry that is the hard part haha.

    I know this is an older video, but this morning I woke up to a pair of rams guarding eggs. They have since eaten them, but I didn't even think I had a male and female as they both look like they have an ovipositor, they are also gold rams so I don't have the black spots to help me sex them, and neither of them appear to have a more pronounced dorsal fin than the other. I also didn't set up a spawning site with a flat surface for them, the eggs were laid right in the middle of the tank on a dark colored crypt leaf. Will females still lay eggs without the presence of a male? I had no intentions of attempting a breeding project with them, but if females only lay eggs if a male is present, I may just attempt to see if I can successfully raise some fry. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Are Indian Almond leaves toxic to rams?

    • @FatherFish

      yes if they are plucked from the tree and dried. They must fall from the tree naturally, as with all leaves for use in an aquarium.
