    Percy Grainger (1882 1961)’s orchestration (1928)
    Philharmonia Orchestra · Geoffrey Simon
    • Estampes, L. 108: I. P...
    Starting at 5:50
Here is the score: percygraingera... with some interesting notes.
The two composers choose a different layout of work.
Caplet’s orchestration is more conceived in the traditional setting of orchestration, choosing a musical sound which is related both to Debussy’s own style both to his contemporary aesthetics.
Grainger’s version, as seen with the orchestration of Ravel’s La Vallée des Cloches from Miroirs, portrays a semi ethnographical interpretation of the original piano piece, displaing a smaller setting of instrument (4 pianos, harmonium and tuneful percussion) used, mostly, in a percussive way.
Both the version ends with a diffuse and vague sound reminiscent of a panic experience, a catharsis told by a free but entirely relevant interpretation of the original piano score.
    Some points of interest:
Patterns ongoing underlined in Debussy’s Score:
Caplet: 2:23; 4:07; 4:49 with the beginning pattern repeated until the end.
    Grainger: 8:02; 9:46; 10:34
Even with different orchestration layout, both composers continue with the patterns mentioned in a similar way.

Usually listen to Ralph Vaughan Williams pastoral symphony when the world gets the better and wears you down. This however is even better in its own way such such beautiful calming sounds which transport you to the far East I love every thing about this unusual gem of a piece.
