    hello sir rob! I recently built a chop and flip, currently cycling with fish and it's the 7th day.
    My tap water's pH to begin with was 7.8, and my pH at the moment is at 8.7 with the meter but on the api test kit it's an 8.2. I was wondering when's the typical time the pH to go down? Ammonia's around 0.25ppm, Nitrite's between 2 and 5ppm, Nitrate's at 20ppm.
    I've also covered the radial filter and bio reactor with some net shading since it started to grow some algae in them.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  Год назад +1

      It can take some time for the establishing bacteria to strip the alkalinity from the water Z Films.
      Best course of action is to make sure that the system is totally cycled before adding any fish so the ammonia isn't a problem for them.
      I'd also suggest that you plant out the beds now if you haven't done so already.
      Happy growing.

    • @zfilmsph
      @zfilmsph Год назад

      @@RobsAquaponics thanks for replying sir rob! Much Appreciated.
      I think I've managed to fully cycled it. I stopped feeding the fish for 2 days when I posted my first comment. after that Ammonia and Nitrites went to 0, Nitrates are at 20-40ppm. Thankfully, only 1 fish died during that 2 days. But I did lose about 50 tilapia before doing that probably due to Ammonia/Nitrite poisoning.
      My growbed (with pumice rock) is 1/4 occupied. I was so happy it germinated even with this high of a pH.
      I do want to ask for some feedback regarding my pH. API Test kit always says 8.2, pH Meter (newly bought and calibrated) ranged from 8.6 to 8.9 throughout the day. Is the difference between the pH meter and API Test kit too big or is it inside the accepted delta error?
      Also, i've bought (still waiting) for a replacement probe and calibration solutionsJust in case my probe is faulty/not calibrated correctly.

    G’day Rob, bit of different question here. I’ve been thinking of putting some sort of an aquascape pond in my backyard and I’m now wondering if I could use that as my tank? They principals are almost identical where there’s bio-filtration, water flow and fish etc. Not sure if it would be possible or even plausible. If you’re unsure about aquascapes, some of the channels I watch is Atlantis Water Gardens and TEAM Aquascape. Cheers

      @RobsAquaponics  Год назад +1

      Sorry for the other reply, not sure how but YT put a response to another comment here.... 🤔
      The big issue I can see is that the nutrient load in the water may not be high due to the lower stocking density I've seen in the large pond/aquascape builds.
      If there's a natural bog filter in the system you could plant that out as they will be receiving the bulk of the solids as they're captured.
      Hope that helps some Gilly.

    I use Lakeway Tilapia's Blue tilapia (St. Peters fish)
    I always wondered why you had perch and stuff instead.
    For those who can raise tilapia they are a perfect food fish, particularly the blues who don't have a sand vein and tolerate colder temperatures, a must in Wisconsin.
    The legal stuff for me is that it cannot be attached to any waterways, and I cannot sell them without a bunch of licensing and inspection, but on a small scale for personal consumption it's no bother.
    Their biggest pitfall is also what makes them very easy to harvest. They die nearly instantly in ice water.
    Only other downside is they breed so aggressively they kill each other, but this is less of an issue with experience sorting breeding colonies. Happens, though.
    Thanks for a great video! I'm tempted to get into some cold-tolerant species so I can run a pond outdoors through the winter. Different perch here, but I love them.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  Год назад +1

      Would sunfish be OK outside in a pond through winter there Thomas?

    • @thomaswolf6507
      @thomaswolf6507 Год назад

      @@RobsAquaponics Yes, ironically I actually live in the Sunfish capital of the world (Lake Onalaska) although the growth rates are so slow I never thought it would be worthwhile economically.
      I've ran 500 gallon pool ponds indoors in the past but due to an injured arm I downscaled and automated as much as I could.
      I keep a LMB (Large mouth bass) in with my tilapia breeder for "birth control" lol. LMB are technically a sunfish.
      Perch here are carnivorous so they can't and won't eat kibble.
