- Thankfully I downloaded all the levels before Nintendo shut down the servers!
Today we are playing the 2YMM celebration levels from Mario Maker 1...it's a sad day that when you realize Mario Maker on the Wii U is dead.

The official servers may be down, but Pretendo I think has the levels backed up? I'm not 100% sure, but at least new levels can be shared.
You don't even need to mod your Wii U, you can change your DNS in your internet settings to what Pretendo has on their site and log in with a Pretendo Network ID. If you want to transfer old data to the new account, you need homebrew (modding), but otherwise, you can run online.
We can still play by connecting to the pretendo servers at least

And do what about it? I have a limited number of games on Steam which I rarely play, I won't be surprised one day when I won't be able to access them ever again. My actual NES carts? :P
I remember when I started watching you play SMM1! By the beggining of 2019, I had atarted playing too! That was more than 5 years ago!
It's really sad that they're killing the many, many important and good memories of the game! But, at least, I got to be a part of it. Even though it was a short period of time, since it was in the 3ds, and by the time I got it in the WiiU, SMM2 had been suspected/announced.
Anyways, you were a really big and important part of SMM1, the community, the trolls, the YT SMM experience, and my teen years of a Mario player. Thank yku for having made this game awesome, with your amazing personality in your gameplay, in-game, livestreams, and YT! I've watched your persona grow and seen you develop yourself online and in this game since 2019, and I'm glad to have been a witness!
there is 1 good thing about this, EVERY SINGLE SMM1 LEVEL HAS BEEN BEAT BEFORE THE SHUT DOWN. also rip Wii U and 3DS online 😭
Even Trimming the Hedges, which was TAS, was able to be beaten in a massive reflexes flex.

I hope Dashie's been downloading levels before the shutdown. He's my favorite Mario Maker RUclipsr, and we didn't even see the end of some of the levels he's played.

It’s very interesting to me that I found Dave because I stumbled onto him playing a composer level, and now that the servers are closing, I am watching Dave play a composer level which is the end song to one of the games.

You know what’s crazy I have been watching dgr for 6 whole years and I bought merch and everything, best choices I ever made
They should have kept Splatoon though, it needed online to live. Wii U and 3DS online will be missed but at least we can still play offline. It will be sad for online games but offline games are completely fine. Also no subscription necessary for Wii U and 3DS is brilliant. Knowing you can play with anyone without needing to spend any money is much more pleasurable.

I bought a Wii U especially for Mario Maker... I made several levels that I put a lot of time and thought into. It makes me glad to know while they may be gone forever publically, there's still a chance someone can play them. Edit: Also, I'm very wary of buying new Nintendo stuff. Especially if it offers a creator platform. (No pun intended!)

This was a reply to a comment that basically said they had to pull the servers due to money and labour costs... There's a bigger issue and I am going to paste that reply here: With the amount of money the big N is pulling in now, keeping this server online / migrating the parts like mario maker 1 and the thriving community games to their other servers would have been a small task. Yes, a small investment of money, but that goodwill would have gone a LONG way to their image; rather than a blanket announcement saying: "Hey, you know all of your old games you are still playing online? They are going to be coasters now and your online play you are enjoying? Well too bad... You have to buy and play other games on newer systems." It sets a precedent that someday, the switch, the thing that is online only, will do the EXACT thing! Only that it's ENTIRE library will no longer function when that server is pulled.

You can technically still play all Mario Maker 1 levels, they have been preserved and you can transfer them into a savefile, but the process to do so seems a bit too convoluted for my lazy ass right now.
Pretendo look it up if you want to play online again
