It is almost impossible to find gouache background paintings of this level on RUclips. Believe me, it's probably my favorite subject matter and I've seen them all. This painting and video of yours is now in my top three of all time favorite RUclips videos. Simply amazing sir, please do more!
Wooby Wibbity I mean "most" background paintings are digital, but you're right much of the older traditional animation was painted in acrylic or more towards the end of the era of traditional animation cel-vinyl. It's interesting you mention studio ghibli because none of their background paintings are acrylic, they're made using poster paint, which is a water soluble medium similar to gouache
You, sir, are a magician with the brush and a scientist with the colors. Your art and videos are Inspiring and soothing at the same time. Consider my mind blown.
man, MAN. that's just astounding. your choice of colors is on point and i love the details, especially the red door/wall. i hope you can make more of gouache painting (and recording it) because it's my favorite medium in the whole world. good job as always!
I'm such a big fan. I love your watercolor works, and I prefer those videos because I'm too lazy to try other mediums. But this has got to be one of my favorite paintings from you.
I'm planning to start on gouache soon and finding your channel makes me more excited to actually try this medium. Phenomenal painting and an immediate subscribe. Keep up the amazing work!
it looks absolutely gorgeous! I'm so glad I found you a few weeks ago, you are a source of inspiration to me and get me motivated to do more creative work. Thank you so much for uploading your works and processes it's really educational!
This is one of my favourite paintings from you, will you ever upload real time painting videos? With the whole process included even is its without commentary?
I think it's ok if it's that long, however much it takes, I would really like to paint along with it. When you have more time you could also livestream here on youtube with your Iphone for the same purpose :D
i've watched a bunch of your videos but hadn't heard your voice yet - very nice to hear you! you have a lovely accent. also, amazing picture, of couse :)
Gorgeous! I would love to see you do more gouache, I've just started learning this media earlier this year! Thanks for sharing your experiment it's inspiring!
This is amazing! I'm so in love with your illustrations! I love how detailed they are, not even mentioning how skilled you are, that goes without saying :) Honestly, your artwork is one of the most aestheticly pleasing things I've found on the Internet x) Thank you for sharing it with us! Keep making beautiful art and have a great day!
If you like the gray you could always try laying down some translucent watercolor ground. (it's gesso for watercolor. so you can paint watercolor on anything.)
I really wish I understood gouache. I bought some a couple months ago and I've been messing around with them and I can't get anything even halfway decent out of them. I really don't know what consistency to use, how to layer things, how to mix good skin tones, etc etc. I'm jealous of your skills. I guess I'll just keep practicing but I'm very tempted to go back to digital art
Yup, that's it basically. You can do all of this using regular gouache or poster colours but you have to be careful not to disturb the layers that are already painted. Because I am used to digital painting I like to just layer stuff as I please without thinking much about the bottom layers, that's why I prefer acrylic gouache. I heard you can also use casein paint this way. Also the difference between just regular acrylic paint is that acrylic gouache give you a matte finish so they look more like your regular gouache when dry.
what kind of crazy practice you have been through, mateus ? i am dreaming (and practicing) to be great illustrator, and could you tell me a little bit how you practicing until you become this good ?
Thanks, though I don't think I'm good enough. Not at all really ;) I have been painting a long time, probably more than 15 years now. Also 4 yeas as a anime background artist gives you a little bit of routine and confidence in the things you do. I still learn a lot each painting and try to experiment with new things so it's a constant learning process really.
Hi, you're a huge inspiration to me and I want to ask a question. I am planning on getting gouache but I already have watercolor. Is there a point where watercolor would be better for a situation instead of gouache? I'm asking this because you're an incredible watercolor artist and I don't want my watercolors to go to waste. Right now gouache seems to be better than watercolor, it's opaque, you can cover up mistakes, and you get a really good digital like effect.
for covering layers, and "digital" painting gouache or acrylic gouache is a lot better. You can cheat a little painting with watercolours ant then mix white gouache and watercolours to add detail on top. But you can go a long way with only 6 colours of gouache so you can buy some and try them out!
hello again!! is the nicker poster paint sold in tubes the same as the ones sold in glass jars? because i only managed to buy the tubes ones to try out. thank you :)

sorry i didn't see you mentioned poster paint and acrylic gouache already - nevermind!
cool. which series? I'd like to check that out
Thank you very much! I will be making more, also to "transfer" my digital background painting skills to the traditional medium!
You, sir, are a magician with the brush and a scientist with the colors. Your art and videos are Inspiring and soothing at the same time. Consider my mind blown.
Thank you!
It's nice to know that there are still kind and hardworking people still in the world like you =)

good job as always!
I certainly want to do more of this type of painting, also outside so stay tuned! :)
wow I just love how you do it, it looks so simple but I know very well it's not!
By far my most fave gouache tutorial 🙌🏻
I would love to see a full live stream of you using acrylic gouache. It looks amazing.
I'm such a big fan. I love your watercolor works, and I prefer those videos because I'm too lazy to try other mediums. But this has got to be one of my favorite paintings from you.

This is one of my favourite paintings from you, will you ever upload real time painting videos? With the whole process included even is its without commentary?
That would be reeeeeally long about 6 hours for this piece for example. I'm considering doing it when I will have more time for my art though :)
I think it's ok if it's that long, however much it takes, I would really like to paint along with it. When you have more time you could also livestream here on youtube with your Iphone for the same purpose :D
Your colours are so beautiful I'm in awe
Wow! This is amazing. Great Job Mateusz.

That's neat
YOU ARE A GOD
That painting is beautiful, especially those colors look great. But how does acrylic gouache differ from just gouache? Is it easier to layer?
Wooby Wibbity Ohh ok, thanks for the reply
Yup, that's it basically. You can do all of this using regular gouache or poster colours but you have to be careful not to disturb the layers that are already painted. Amazing painting. Can you layer regular gouache on top of acrylic gouache?
I would think you can. Acrylic Gouache are mat when dry so it should be possible. You should try it on a small sample first though 👍

I did not know acrylic gouache was a thing until just now.
hello again!! is the nicker poster paint sold in tubes the same as the ones sold in glass jars? because i only managed to buy the tubes ones to try out. thank you :)
From what I know, yes, it's the same. You can even buy empty jars here to make your own mixes.
