  • Step into history at the breathtaking Soofie Masjid in Ladysmith, a symbol of faith and architectural splendor. 🕌
This magnificent religious monument, locally known as the Soofie Masjid, traces its origins to the 1895 arrival of Hadrat Soofie Saheb, a revered Muslim mystic, in South Africa. Over 15 years, Hadrat Soofie Saheb dedicated himself to constructing up to 12 mosques along Durban’s eastern interior shore. Though he passed in 1910, his legacy lives on.
In the 1960s, the master builder Jamaloodeen took on the task of repairing and expanding the mosque, considering it his personal duty to honor the original architect’s vision. Remarkably, Jamaloodeen sketched his daily designs in the sand outside the mosque, leading to the creation of the majestic structure we see today, now far larger than its original form.
The Soofie Masjid features a rectangular plan adorned with multiple minarets inspired by Mughal architecture. The property includes the main prayer hall, a women’s prayer section, and ablution facilities. There is one large minaret, three medium-sized ones, and twelve smaller minarets that ornament the mosque. The building also boasts an extended garden area for events and a multi-purpose hall as an annex.
Whether you’re here to pray, admire the architecture, or learn about the history, the Soofie Masjid welcomes all with open arms. Come and experience the peace and beauty this historical gem offers.
