I recently discovered this desert and I’m obsessed. Ate a whole one in one day. So glad it’s easy to make. I’m gonna be making these forever now. Dangerously delish. And eventually the lemon one too.
If you love lemon try using a lemon box mix and add lemon juice and zest to the cream cheese mixture. Its dangerously good :)
That sounds good and I bet I would love the pieces of zest.
Usual Weirdo brilliant
That sounds awesome you had such a great idea. I cannot wait to try it like you suggested. I hope you have a lovely day.
That sounds like lemon bars. I have to make 2 boxes of the lemon bar mix if I want to get 1 piece. Even or Chihuahua loves them, hehe. 👍🍰🐕👀🍋🍣🥚
Usual Weirdo The lemon 🍋 probably cuts some of the sweetness. Good idea!
4:55 - "I made it all by myself like a big girl" - lol, that made me crack up. I almost spit my snack out!
Ha! Ha! :))
I love making this! I live in St. Louis where Gooey Butter Cake was invented... every time we go to visit my in-laws in Indy this is requested!!!
I made it the other day and base mixture creep up the sides so the outside bites you have a nice crunchy part and a soft ooey gooey inside!
I couldnt get mine to do that, im so mad. The bottom crusty , chewy sticky part is my favorite. I just cant get it like that
This is one of my all time favorite recipes! I've made many different flavors and there was never one that we didn't love. The last one I made a couple of weeks ago I used a strawberry box cake mix. We had topped it with macerated strawberries. Delicious!
That is so neat that you change up the recipe. I never would have thought of that!
Oooh!! Never thought of making different flavors! Thanks for sharing!
Mrs. Tami, the possibilities are endless!
Holy moly, an entire box of sugar?! Very sweet is an understatement.
THANK YOU FOR THIS. I had a sudden craving. This is such a simple recipe and I'm a visual learner.
You are welcome! I'm so glad it was helpful.
Add pecans to the cheese mixture, makes it even better!
I grew up eating this in the south. We called this philly cake but we put pecans in the mix.
I want to try it with adding pecans. How much would you add? 1 1/2, maybe?
@@davidaboykin7048 1 1/2 (chopped)is perfect. You can always add more or less if you like, it's up to you..😋
@@davidaboykin7048 I wouldn't add too much though! You want to have some of that gooeyness in between. It really all depends on how much you are making..
Made this today after watching the video and daydreaming about it 4 previous times. Loved it. Added a half of a package of vanilla pudding to the cake mix so the crust on the bottom was more soft. Lived it. Plan on tipping it with blueberry pie filling and serving it for the super bowl party this year
That's wonderful! :)
I am definitely going to try this recipe over the holidays, looks delish. I love your black cat! I'm the ultimate cat lady. 😻
Making this as I watch now. Hey, Fred. Love big cats!! Thanks for posting! :)
We were eating this 30 years ago, and the recipe was called Cheese Squares. The recipe was the same, but we thought it was too rich and cut the amount of confectioners sugar in half. That made it perfect! Haven't had it in years, but I remember how much I liked the smell of them coming from the oven. They tasted great with the reduced confectioners sugar.
That's the recipe i use for my business SquareBiz™ Chess Squares and More...I make ANY flavor you could imagine...The suggestions are limitless...I've also done a bacon flavored which was the perfect combo of sweet and salty...an surprisingly it's not as fattening as one would think 😉😉😉
This is just the standard Chess Square recipe. It is just called different things depending on who makes it and where you live. My grandmother made these when I was a kid. The are wonderful no matter where the recipe came from!
Thanks for watching!
That looks really good. I love everything butter cake.
This one reminds me of a lot of one traditional German cake called "Schmandkuchen", which is quite similar in ingredients and preparation, but has a filling that is based on high fat sour cream (20-24% fat) instead of cream cheese.
The ending was very cute. When I was a child we always had to watch our dog when there was any kind of cheese cake, because one moment with him and the cake alone and the cake was gone :).
Oh my goodness! That is so funny! Ashley said that she made a cake, frosted it, and left it uncovered on the counter. She came back several hours later and she said that HALF the icing had been licked off! YUCK! ;)
Haha, I have some suspicions :) ...
I made this using lemon cake mix and put lemon flavoring in the mixture that goes on top. I think I like it better because the lemon cuts some of the sweetness. Also used chocolate cake mix and but left the mixture on top the same that was good too.
Thank you, Patty! It's great hearing how other people make this!
I buy one from Walmart. It is soooo good! I try not to buy it often because it is so sweet. I was wondering how it's made so thank you for the recipe and video
You are welcome!
Ni
I loved the special guest appearance! My cat has to have a look at what's cooking too.
He is so sweet :)
I know this is an old video, but I used this recipe today. It's in the oven right now. Thank you! New Sub.
I hope you enjoy it! Thank you 😊
@@TamiDunn It's out of the oven cooling. Looks Wonderful. It's actually for a big dinner here tomorrow. Red Velvet Cake in the oven now. lol Thank you so much. Have a great weekend!
you need to sift powdered sugar over the top of it - makes it look pretty and tastes good too
Gotta love a St. Louis favorite!
Omg I LOVE Paula Deen! She's opening up a new restaurant in Myrtle Beach and can't wait to go to it. Also, have you seen her new kitchen items at Belk? They are beautiful. ❤️
We don't have a Belk that is convenient to us. I wish we did. I will look on their website! Thanks!
Oh I just ate at her Myrtle beach one!! I think it’s better than the Georgia one
Michael will want to make this for sure. He loves this kind of stuff
I bet he would love these!
Salaam Tami, I am so excited that you guys have been making baking videos lately. We really enjoy it, thank you. I really miss Paula Deens show on the Food Network. I love her, she is always sweet and humble, I used to watch her show and now we miss it. 💐❤️💐
I wish she was still on there too!
Ok so i BUSTED out laughing when you said OOEY GOOEY BUTER CAKE Lol
Thank you for watching!
CATS! you gotta love them!
Liz N Yes! I LOVE cats!
No you don't
You don’t have to put a pound of sugar in it - I’ve made it using half the sugar and it’s good you can even go less than half I’ve done it a few times and it turns outs so good less sugar
You don't have to, but we love it super-sweet :)
The cake mix is sweet but some people truly don’t understand balancing flavors it’s called flavor profiles they just dump a bunch of stuff in a bowl and don’t understand the fundamentals
Seems fairly simple to make! I love gooey butter cake. I bought a slice from the bakery department in my store once and love it, very unique in taste and flavor.
I've never tried it from a bakery.
Tami, this cake is so good, but cloyingly sweet!!! When I make it I cut the sugar down to half a pound , instead of the whole pound and omg its dreamy!!!
Beautiful Woman I’m glad to know that it still comes out OK with only half the sugar.
@@mariannesouza8326 Not just OK, but much Better. The crust is fine as is but if you cut the sugar in the actual cream cheese part it's amazing
I love Ooey gooey cakes!!! I cant wait to try your version. Thank you Mrs. Dunn
Thank you!
Keep in mind you can use any variety of cake mix + any add-in's your imagination can come up w/ but.. Found in a cookbook I got prob 12-15 yrs ago now, there was a recipe for cake mix cookies. A diff variety a LOT closer to the ingredients shown here, than the ones I've seen on the internet since... just different amts/form. A cookie my son has asked for EVERY year since... to this day, this variety is his favorite (imho, because unique combo/unlike any 'cookie' flav you can find in general market + ... prob reminds him of strawberry quik, but better, lol) SO easy, give this a try (again, you can use any variety, combo) Cream 1 stick of butter + 1 brick of (full fat/philly) cream cheese in bowl... Once combined, add in 1 lg/xl egg until incorporated. Mix in 1 boxed Moist Strawberry Cake Mix. Once done, throw in a couple hand-fulls of quality white chocolate chips (hard to find, but when I can.. i always choose the discs vs chips. Idk why, makes a huge difference in any cookie. More melty, like little pools of chocolate, yum!) put in fridge to stiffen up (10 min or so, while waiting for oven to pre-heat to 375) Get plate or bowl & put in some powdered sugar, set aside. Using cookie scoop, portion out dough & drop onto plate... roll in powdered sugar until completely covered. Place on cookie sheet & repeat. Bake 10-12 min, cool.... ENJOY! SO darn good! Chocolate cake w/ choc chips/discs or heath chips... yellow cake w/ broken up hershey bar, mini marshmallows, crumbled graham cracker... German chocolate w/ coconut + cut up caramel squares.... pineapple cake w/ cherry chips, almond extract & a few pineapple tidbits cut up.. ALL, amazing! PLUS, rolling them in powdered sugar before baking = they come out looking crackled. I guess.. ooey gooey cookies? Except, these... all come out done all the way, while still being so good! :) ENJOY!!! The strawberry ones really are quite unique. Thanks for sharing.... Stay safe & be well.
Awwww, lovely cat
Thank you :)
I watched another video that used a pound came mix. Either one would be great!
Butter! 🥞 I used to love Kristen Wiig playing Paula Deen.
I love me some Paula Deen!
I've been enjoying your cooking videos, Tami! I will have to make this recipe sometime! 😊
Thank you! Megan, this is a great one to make!
I’ve made this multiple times. Always a big hit!
I love your black kitty😍 I have one named Buddy we rescued from tiny❤
I also add a stick of butter to my top part with the cream cheese,,, oh so good
That cooking music was so cute 😃🎵
My husband makes this for us. This one of our favorites!
I can understand why it is a favorite!
Top layer in my recipe has stick of butter too!
Paula Deens recipe is supposed to have a stick of butter in the topping also I just looked it up.
Is two egg right ,
1 for the cake mix and the other for the Filling right
Another great recipe Tami!! Going to try this one sometime as well. 😁
This is an easy one, but so, so good.
Making these today!
I use to buy Paula's ooey gooey cake at Kroger's but I don't see it anymore. Now I can make my own. Thx for sharing.
Its just gooey butter cake, there's no ooey in the name and its NOT Paula Deens recipe. It was invented in st louis many years ago.
'Hello friend' ^_^ I love your kitty cats. And all your videos of course :)
Thank you :)) He really wanted some of this and would have eaten it! He eats anything!
You guys want to try paula deens chocolate and pumpkin gooey butter cake for your channel the pumpkin is best for thanksgiving!
Making now as I’m watching video. Thanks
I hope you enjoy it!
These are delicious chilled !
Thank you for letting us know :)
The pumpkin version is delicious !!
I need to try it!
Too sweet!!
To always make them. But never use vanilla extra. I use almond extra. I been doing that for 38 years. My family love it.
Cat people! Love it.🐈♥️
I’m making this tomorrow.
I’ve had cats my whole life, I have had unique cats before but never had a kitty that won’t eat anything but her cat food. Simply amazes me! 🐈
Awesome video, Thank you
Thank you so much!
MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!
You know that Tropicana frozen coconut six ounce bag and a can drained
Crushed pineapple drained well, may be good added to second mixture
And vanilla
It looks like a yummy dessert! I love your visitor. I have a black cat, too, and she's such a little weirdo!
Thank you for watching!
Try it using.."a Dunan Hines Butter Reipe Cake Mix" So...." much better than generic brands
Can't wait to try this!!
I just know you will enjoy this :)
I like the fact that you attempted to make the gooey cake but I will advise you to use a cookie sheet pan or a cake pan, it was undercooked and not brown on top because of the pan you used
Thank you for the tip!
Hi Folks. Oh my goodness!! This looks so decadent. It is simple to make. I like that! Sounds really good! Tfs. :)
You are welcome :)
I made it and I loved it.
I'm so glad!
Making me miss St. Louis
Best handz down
You can buy Ooey Gooey Butter Cake at Walmart near the bakery.
Looks really good.
Delicious I've the chocolate cake and it is to die for
Looks amazing.. Thanks for sharing.. :")
All the recipes I am finding for Paula Deen is a stick of butter in the crust and a stick of butter in with the cream cheese mixture. Did you overlook it or do you prefer it that way? Mine is in the oven with 2 sticks of butter.🤷♀️
This was the only recipe that I have seen. It's so good though!
I serve it with cherry, raspberrry and whip cream
My aunt makes these too!
Thank you Awesome.
Tami, do you prefer gooey cakes or dry ones? Gooey is definitely my thing!... I love gooey banana bread for instance! Mmmm...
I like gooey too - just not soggy.
omg looks so good lol
Thank you :)
Stop calling this “Paula Deen’s”. This recipe has been passed around in St. Louis since the Great Depression. You can buy it at virtually every bakery in St. Louis.
That may be true, however, I followed Paula Deen's recipe.
I'm not blaming you. However, I am blaming Paula Deen. She took a recipe that has been passed around St. Louis for over eighty years and slapped her name on it. That irritates a lot of people who grew up with the stuff waaaaay before she ever heard of it.
Allan Petterson I can understand that!
I have a copy of the original recipe everything made from scratch - cake, filling and all... There was an article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch that had a picture of the guy who created this cake - along with the recipe....
But this is her recipe. A real gooey butter cake uses a yeast dough for the base and doesn't have cream cheese. Her dish is not authentic.
Thanks for the video Tami! Quick question: If I wanted to make these without an electric mixer, to get the same consistency, which utensil would you recommend using? Sorry for the novice question. Thanks!
You could probably use a spoon, but you are going to work your arm out. I hope it works out for you. If you could borrow a hand mixer, that would be great.
Usually, the filling calls for another stick of melted butter. Is this another version?
I make her pumpkin version and it's delicious.
I will have to try it since we love pumpkin.
I wonder what the calorie count on this is? Maybe I don't want to know.
Nooooo, just eat one piece and then walk away ;)
If eaten as one of the X amount of slices in the pan no worse than any other cake or pie. :-)
Richard Lund Be afraid, be very afraid! 😂
I looked at Paula Dean’s recipe and she added a stick of butter to the sugar/ cream cheese mix but this recipe didn’t. Is that correct? I prefer this one because there’s less butter.
This is an excellent recipe. It’s delicious!
Where I come from these are called chess squares
bacon grease I thought I was the only one who knew this. I’ve eaten chess squares since I was a little girl & I’m 53 years old now. My daughter and I had a debate about this. She had her recipe and I had mine. It was the same recipe except hers called for 2 sticks of butter and mine called for 1. When she asked her brothers to try her ooey gooy butter cake, they took one bite and they asked her when did she start making chess squares 😂
Yes, me too! I'm from Georgia! 😍
I always make her gooey pumpkin butter cake.
Ooooh, I've never heard of that one.
Tami Dunn
Try it for thanksgiving its delicious with some whipped cream
www.food.com/recipe/pumpkin-gooey-butter-cake-paula-deen-47326
What’s the best cake mix to use if I can’t find yellow cake mix? And is the temp in Celsius or Fahrenheit?
I would use a white cake mix and the temperature is in Fahrenheit.
Tami Dunn Thank you lovely x
You didn’t add the melted butter to the cream cheese mixture. Why is that?
Funny kitty!!!!! :0)
Yes, he is!
So 3 eggs total?
they didn't brown on top because of the pan you used. Best results come using a glass pan,
Online I found a recipe saying it is Paula Dean's and calls for butter in the topping as well has anyone tried that?
@@allenelder4675 thanks next time will try that
Have you had the Marketside gooey butter bar? OMG...
I haven't tried it yet.
What brand & model is your mixer?
This is it: ruclips.net/video/3ssYZXQvJJQ/видео.html
omg...I love me some gooey cake. When I make it the cake dough is so sticky...any suggestions why?
Are you using the same measurements?
@@TamiDunn Yes...maybe I'm under or over mixing...thanks for responding.

Thank you for watching!
This recipe It originated in St. Louis during the depression. Paula Deen only copied it. This cake has been in St. Louis bakeries since at least the 40's.
I have tried to make this cake so many times and it has never come out exactly how I see it on the tutorials. 😞
I hope you will give it another try :))
Don't feel bad. I FAILED at it tonight. Im gonna try again tomorrow
a randall lolol See there! I don’t know why it don’t ever come out like it does on ALL the tutorials I’ve seen.
@@jenjenproductions2414 I tried it again today and it was another FAIL IDK what I'm doing wrong lol. I will try again and make the bottom layer more thin and see what happens
a randall Hey, A Randall. Don’t give up cause guess what?! I just tried it again and it actually came out a lot better. Instead of baking it at 350 for 50 mins, I did it at about 325 for 40 mins. Just realized that my oven bakes fast.
Does the cake have to be refrigerated?
It will last for 1 to 2 days at room temperature or you can keep it longer in the refrigerator.
@@TamiDunn Thank you
mine is in the oven right now , my wife is on KETO ….. not me … she's gone with her friends to Port Aransas .. not me . I'm baking myself a butter cake ! thank you for sharing . PS . please don't be offended , but you look like Sally Field … that's probably why I followed your recipe . 20 minutes left......
Charles, you have the right idea - eat whatever you can while she's out of the house ;) Thank you; I love Sally Field :)
Thank you. I think you could omit ALL the sugar and still have something very tasty.
I LOVE LOVE this recipe. It is incredibly delicious. Cheesecake on steroids.
I am African-American, I love Paula Deen, I don't believe she is a racist, I think she was railroaded out to make room for Martha Stewart to come back and claim her throne. half of the things was pushed by the media and out of context.
I agree with you. What a shame. I love Paula because she's so honestly silly about everything.
