I love the matt under the chicken. Where in SF can I get one of those or a couple of them? I'm moving to NYC soon n want to get that before I move.... :D Thanks and great video CJ!
"...I could have eaten 3.14 of them." That's real chicken pi.
A bit imprecise though! .... ;-)
Haha I think that 3.14 flew the coop overhead!
@@elbay2 no he ate the rest of the equation
Some Southern Stuff Youre both so right☺
Took me a second to get that.
Wait, what? 😦 Oh! 😳 Hahaha! 🤣
chef john is like the bob ross of food recipes. he just pumps out quality content
_You are, after all, the big beautiful bald guy, of your whole chicken pie!_
FOR YOU
lol baker commenting on this video
I thought maybe the Captain Bligh.
The romancing the stone, of the chicken in the scone?
Try you must, the chicken under crust
Hi Chef John, never in my life have I been this early, do I now deserve to touch your mustache please
Yes, but deserving to, and getting to, are two entirely different things. ;)
Alma His mustache is magical
Creepy...
What's good cutie ;)
Hello
You stuffed a whole chicken in a pie, but when are you gonna do a whole pie stuffed in a chicken?
I smoked a duck once that was stuffed with apples and cinnamon. No crust, though.
Sir James W. V. Savile, OBE
Not relevant ._.
Did you get a good high?
NETizpossible THATS NEXT I HOPE
Soon...
Afterall, You are the Marty Mcfly of your whole chicken pie ! 🍗
I love you
I wasn't trying to be original, I just thought of it so I wrote it, didn't mean to copy you, I didn't know you said that.
warning Brenda: snowflake alert
Marty, without the bones the chicken wouldn't taste as nice, besides the residual heat in the bones help the chicken cook from the inside out
Christina Benson We have a WINNER!
You just reminded me of my mom's joke:
πr²?
No, pie are round. Cornbread are square.
KoyasuNoBara oh man that’s my dads favorite joke (except the cornbread part)
It's a throwback. In the medieval period, they made grand meat pies where one or more winged creatures were baked inside a pastry sarcophagus. As in the rhyme, "4 and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie..."
They had one of those giant pies on Game of Thrones. I think they killed some of the birds when they cut it open.
JamesJ Fisk Usually the ingredients were cooked, but sometimes at Royal courts they would put live birds or frogs inside an already baked crust as an amusement.
Wasn’t that a dainty dish to set before the king?
Pastry covering was one way they helped compensate for the inconsistency of heating and rendering moist meat in antiquity ovens. Doughs were often heavy and considered discardable from eating the ingredients inside.
Sometimes they went really overboard and baked a whole cow, pig, or even dolphin, sometimes stuffed nesting egg style with successively smaller animals. I saw a historical reenactor baked a pig stuffed full of partridges or game hens.
I'm going to try this with a whole de-boned chicken.
I was thinking the same thing!
I had the same thought. I have decent knife skills but have yet to master the technique required.
100% agree, though it probably won't hold it's shape as well.
the bone juice adds flavor and nutrition, and you can get even more out of it by making stock
That is a GENIUS idea!
3.14 portions... nice one.
Pi in the Ski.
I love that you show when things go wrong, too. It's like you're training us to not panic if something goes wrong.
Especially love your note about the skin frying off at the end of the process... sweet.
My mother used to roll canned (I know, but) ham in biscuit dough and bake for 30 to 45 minutes. then we would pull the bread off and feed it to the pets, and the ham would be tender and moist, and without a lot of fat left over. (We were in hard times then and canned ham was cheap, and done right tasted good.)
allan harville Sometimes desperate food is the best food! Always something to be thankful for.
No need to justify! I love canned ham, rich or poor.
Wait why feed it to pets sounds like a waste and what did you do with the biscuit part
@@hopelessheathen8190 we fed the bread dough to the pets, as it was WAY TOO soggy with grease to eat ourselves. IT was the meat we ate, and it would keep for a while after most of the fat was rendered out of the meat.
@@jeffreyharville1918 oh lol thanks for clearing that up thats smart
Chef John, I'm a home cook for more than forty years and you have upped my game in every way. Thank you! -casey
What a simply wonderful recipe! Thank you, Chef John, for sharing this with all of us.
"Learn how to make a Whole Chicken Pie! Have you ever been eating chicken pot pie, and thought to yourself, this is good, but I wish it wasn’t as creamy, and had bones? "
That was almost exactly what I was thinking. :)
omg
never thought that in my life...i find the recipe very impractical and dicey
I like how chefs always say “a drizzle of olive oil” then proceed to pour a quarter cup of oil...
latoyaw100 when it comes to butter or olive oil, there's no such thing as too much.
André Ramalho Ortigão Corrêa Tell that to my waistline lol
Not only do I get excited to try your recipes I just love listing to your voice it's so relaxing
After I read his feature in my feed, I hear him say “that’s right ...” lol I love these shows
I LOVE listening to this guy at half speed! He sounds like a very happy, drunken chef. :-)
I'm thinking chicken Wellington.🤔
Chef John, your videos are amazing, not only because of the food, but I find them so calming, and they help my anxiety. You're ace!!!
I like that! Thank you for sharing your recipe!
"That Chicken Pi was so good that I could have eaten 3.14 of them." LOL your best line ever !
😯Wooow! Food Wishes do come true. 💫🙏🏽
I made this for my very first dinner party. It was a show stopper! Thanks chef John! I served it with a simple spinach & greens salad. No one had seen chicken served like this before and the presentation was beautiful! 😊
This looks incredible!!! And not much more ingredients and work than just roasting it, but much more impressive!!! Thanks Chef John
I swear, I go to RUclips University and I study under the tutelage of Master Chef John... At least in my dreams lol! This man can do no wrong! lmao Teach us sensei!
... Then I gather you haven't yet seen his hysterical video about the fried cauliflower sticks? It made me feel so... normal!
“So good I could have eaten 3.14 of these”
You sir win the internet!
Watching this for about the 6th time. TRULY one of your Greatest Hits Chef!
Thank you Chef! Yet another beautiful recipe and just like the others of yours I have tried, always turn out spectacular! I really appreciate your efforts to teach us all by sharing your knowledge and skills! Have a great weekend!😊
That’s a big chicken nugget
Your scientists were so preoccupied with if they could, they didn't stop to think if they should
Lmao
That is absolutely stunning. Must try.
This is just beautiful. I've never seen this before and can't wait to try it. Thanks very much!
Man that’s freakin cool!! Nice job!!!
You're a madman!
How is it possible that you knock it out of the park with every single video! Even ones where you admit to fucking up the recipe or the execution they manage to bring me so much joy and satisfaction. Thanks Chef John
I am salivating.That looks heavenly.
Plus, I love you dry sense of humour.
I love how that spinach on your plate was basically for garnish XD

I love your channel Chef John! I've learned so many fun recipes from you that have helped me be more confident in the kitchen!
You are, after all, the Warren Beatty of your Tasty Chicken Pastry!
Thomas Bernecky So sorry, try again, thank you for playing!
Where's the rhyme?
"The skin actually becomes edible". The skin is ALWAYS edible.
Not only is it edible, it's a sin to throw it away.
WOW!! This is a must! Thanks, Chef John!
This is why I love this channel.
Clicked on this so fast, I almost lost a finger
Eli Baker I know right? I shared it with 3 family members before I even got a chance to watch it based on the thumbnail
This is going on my "if I ever have a date, heres what I'll make" list
this...this is just wonderful!
This looks and sounds absolutely fantastic. I might have to try this for a holiday meal this year!
Cold dough keeps its shape better and it makes the butter colder again so it's stiffer going in the oven
Daemon Ember ha ha stiffer going in...
It makes the butter cold so that the water won't run off, but instead steam and create the layers of voids that make pastry flaky
Also shrinks less so that it won’t crack
That's what she said. Giggity.
“Stiffer going in the oven” god that works perfectly
Dat pie dough.
Ha!
lmao
❤️
Simple. Yet, elegant.
Thank you chef John keep cooking.
Wow absolutely amazing dish. I've tried so many of your recipes and they've all been perfect. Thanks so much!!!
Whole cayenne pie
I'm so mind blown right now, I didn't even know this was a thing D: Thanks for sharing this!
tommygirl20247 Ahaha honestly 😂😂 I’m 23 and I’m mind blown because I love chicken pot pie! It never occurred to me that I could just cover a whole chicken with puff pastry
Rhett Heidler I do too!!
N C I had no idea it was an old recipe, thanks for telling me 😊

This looks so good !!!! I need to try it !!
This is a stunner!!!!! Well done! Can't wait to try!
The bird bird bird bird is the word.
A great song by The Trashmen
yaaaaa...yer killin me!!!!
The only song by the Trashmen.
Everybody knows that bird is the word!
Peter agrees
This looks amazing but I couldn’t help but think “I don’t want to be a pie” 😂
Such a cool idea! I want to try this!!
Looks wonderful!!!
I love the way he talks.... lol
Rat rice? Mmmmmm good
Me too😀
I used to HATE it. Avoided watching his videos for years but I’ve finally warmed up to it.
Really sing-songy. His last three words are down the hill, then down some more, then all the way down the hill. Cute!
Wow it looks so good!!!! 💕🦄
it looks so easy, delicious!
I haven’t ever seen another whole chicken (or other chunk of meat) pie before. What a great idea! I can’t wait to try.
Chef John love your recipes.
Binging with babish sadly does not have your ryhming skills
Erin Flores at least BWB is alliterative--obviously on purpose :)
Emiliana Camacho it would be super cool to have them do a crossover
Shhhhh ....[>whispering< .... he does not have chef's cooking skills, either] .... But he can be fun to watch, if you don't actually want to make anything.
Yes! More food porn that I can’t eat because my gallbladder is garbage. I’m saving up all the recipes of delicious things I’m going to eat after my surgery.
You can eat this...I cook like this all the time for my Mom, she's almost 80 and has had Cancer 5 times...she has no Gallbladder and only 1 Kidney, just cook from scratch rather than prepackaged food with additives. This weeks menu...Monday: Tri-Tip Roast, Baked Potato, Asparagus. Tuesday: Salmon, Steamed Whole Artichoke with butter for dipping and Brie en croute. Wed: Roast Chicken stuffed Spaghetti Squash with Cheese. Tonight: Tri-Tip Sandwiches with Cheese and Roasted Pepper and Onion Rings. Tomorrow: Ravioli and Meatballs, Broccoli and Garlic Bread.
I'm saving up for my gallbladder surgery!
Ah, but you can cook this now for those you love... :)
@@lynnwilhoite6194 You can dissolve the gallstones naturally with Break Stone (common name of herb) tea. You simmer it covered for 20 minutes. Strong brew 3-5x day, @ 1 cup each time. Buy two canisters. I think they are 12 0z. I couldn't find it except in that size container for the best price.
I avoided a $2000 surgery for my cat. It takes 2-3weeks. Dissolves to powder, passed naturally. Buy it on Amazon. Completely safe.
@Traci Scheelk, Thank you so much for this information! It's so nice of you! 😊
Looks delicious! My kind of eating! Thanks for sharing!
Loved the chicken Pi throw-away gag at the end. Chef John you are a master 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Now that's a pie! The celery sorbet topped with french rosé wasn't considered as a topping? 🙃
I wonder if adding sugar or honey instead of or in addition to the salt would be good. A little sweet'n'savory action.
"Stuffing is EVIL!" Anyone else have that flash through their brain? I'm sure there's a lot of overlap between John and Alton viewers. I'm guessing since the bird is crusted you can cook it long enough to fully cook the stuffing too. Regardless John's recipes are usually great can't wait to try this one.
God, can't wait for Good Eats to come back .
Sweet version sounds good .
Sounds like a good idea, I would just recommend cooking it the full time then adding the sugar or honey and returning to oven under a broiler for a few short minutes cause sugar on puff pastry at 400 for 1+ hour will burn if applied at the beginning.
Alton seems arrogant to me.
This is amazing !!
You make these dishes so achievable we dont eat out very often when we do it's usually a very nice steak restaurant due to you we have had French Hungarian Chinese German etc. Cuisine thanks for broadening our palates we were a meat potatoes vegetable kind of couple from southern Missouri
The only thing that could make that better would be to de-bone it intact and then apply the dough wrapping. That would be awesome ! 😋
Agreed. I thought Chef John would demonstrate boning out a whole chicken.
I find it easier to just breed my own boneless chickens.
bilalha123 - The bad thing about boneless chicken farms is that the chickens just lay around all the time. That means you’ve got a yard full of fatty, flabby chickens. 🙄
USNVA11 Mmmmm....fatty, flabby chickens.
USNVA11 You say 'fatty, flabby chickens' as though that's a bad thing. Well-marbled chicken, baby!
"I could've eaten 3.14 of them."
Hahahaha!!!
Fantastuc! Thank you.
Wow this looks great
I mean you are after all the Spooky Skeleton
of your chicken wellington!
Ikr he has all the phrases and idioms LOL where he get them from
Chef,
I'ma need you to make a video or two with Binging With Babish.
Sincerely,
Fellow Bay Area Resident
Especially because Andrew cites Chef John as his inspiration!
Chef John You always find ways to amaze. The delicious chicken is one thing and 3.14 pie pun is the cherry on top of the pie.
You are, after all, the wonderful pie guy of your Pi. Very witty Chef John
Whole chicken wellington.
"I could have eaten 3.14 of them"
Me: This guy's a nerd. Subscribed!!
I did find that not having enough pastry initially did make the video very exciting and had me on the edge of my seat! Blockbuster!!
That looks amazing..Im so going to try this!
Hey chef John! i know you're reading this LOL
Am not.
FYI - Binging with Babish did a Chef John punny rhyme today (5 june 2018)
That look lovely.
Oh my oh my, that looks so yummy
This is ambitious glad it worked out though!
Looks GREAT chef... do you think this can be done with a turkey?
I say yes, because after all I do have the last word about my Thanksgiving bird.....
Douglas B That'd be a damned big pie.
With damned overcooked pastry.
What about just a PART of a turkey? The breast, or leg?
I need to make this. And then stare at it. It looks AMAZING.
Looks so delicious!
That is one of the weirdest recipes you've posted yet, Chef John haha
Chicken Wellington?
Every other chef/ cook out there could learn a thing or two from this channel!
Most other cooking channels I only watch the video if the recipe looks good, but I watch everything from chef John even though I know I will never wrap an entire chicken in pie dough
