Now i can finally hatch all my eggs without worrying about battery
haha same reason I'm here.
+RoastKing me too!
ɷ Heey Friendssss I Have F0unddddd W0rikinggg Online Hacck visittt : - t.co/P6RBbBtiby
Dude's got great ideas, but good lord the build quality has my OCD going haywire.
lmao, kinda feel the same way on this one mate..lol
U should off used every thing in the hand crank radio and create a super bike with radio and everything that would of been awesome!
jaremy jonsons and why the hell u remove that solar pannal , if u were tired or u in a traffic jam , that solar pannel will just do its work
True, true. He should make another video using every thing; that would be cool!!! :)
You could have kept the other components. A battery for when you stop pedaling, the radio for some tunes while you ride, the solar for battery charging when you park your bike, and the light for a night ride.
I was sent from Shay's channel, but I've been looking at all your other videos, and they're awesome. Subscribed!
couldn't you leave the solar panel in for a two way charge? (crank generate and solar power)
it takes up space but u could
+Ver808 The solar panel would do practically nothing compared to the crank.
B
Darth Vader every little helps
That is a good idea anything would help
Wouldn't it just break if you hit a jump from the suspension flex
yes probably In you find out a way to mount it to the crown of the fork
Can i use a noramal bicycle dynamo because here you wasted so many parts?
+Đorđe Tomić a bike dynamo is ac powered you will have to rectify the voltage
+wulf 659 but for that all you'd need is 4 diodes and a capacitor
That's a super rad video!
this is what HH used to be, i liked this video way more than your previous ones
What if the tires roll on a poop
wow true
Lol philosophy
+jr then you get a poopy generator
So true
Your in deep shit then , LOL
How to save power, buy a android
Actually iphones have more standby time
HD Trailers [sheel] Actually androids have more variants
lol I agree
Where there's a will, there's a way.
i tried it yesterday and it literally works like a charm! (My tip: if you have a phone stand for your bike, then USE IT!)
Thank you very much!!!
This is actually a fantastic idea. Well done!
This is actually pretty cool. Out riding your bike for excerise and your ipod could never die (:
It worked! It was our science fair project..
Thanks!
Awesome project, I made a purse/ backpack insert that uses inductive charging
To give you a better answer, yes in theory. Though it would require a bit more precise of a rig. It could be fun, but would be too much work to be practical. But if you are willing; Get a longboard with drop or something that allows the nose and/or tail to not have wood over the wheels. Then you would have to fabricate a rig that attaches to the truck, considering that one attached to the wood wouldn't always make contact. Also softer urethane wheels for speed and grip on the generator.
This was very smart and well put together, though you should make another video on how to make a stand
You're a pretty epic bike rider if you can do all of that without crashing.
totally gonna do this over spring break
"today, we are goin-" "NO WE ARE NOT" *clicks off video*......next day *phone dies while on bike* "dammit"
Omg what a lovley moment you got there
It is called a dynamo and linear regulator or any other stabilizing DC step down converter... buy a bycicle dynamo (typically they have 6V and you can get them from ebay) and a linear regulator for 5V (from digikey/farnell/radioshack) and a usb cradle for your phone. Each component costs roughly 1$. So you get the same setup for 3$.
...and you don't have a broken radio at home ;)
they sell the actual charger that attaches to wheel hub .... reasonably priced and looks better ... and hose clamps to scratch paint ... just saying
Should of made a box to protect it from the weather. I would of also left everything else on it. That way you get a head light and radio as well. Also, wouldn't the battery be useful here, wouldn't it allow you to build up a charge to use later? Great idea, I just think you could do so much more, how about a 2.0 version?
I ride a bike everyday to school. I think this is a great idea
pretty f'n genius. great vid!
Marvellous brother!!!!
I'm not sure about the pin-outs of apple products, but if it plugs into a USB port, it's a standard 5v.
an interesting expansion on this would be a phone cradle for the handles and a waterproof casing for the circuit board.
This haves an 90's feeling
that awkward moment where you have to hold your phone the entire bike ride
Actually before I do.. one question. wouldn't I have to worry about destroying my phone battery?
No cause the board was intended for this. That's why it had a usb
You can't, cuz it has resistors, that why he uses the circuit board
Love these how to videos.
I think this bike charger needs a phone stand as well :) that way both hands on the wheels and phone charging way easier! : ) nice invention though
THIS is the kind of advertising I appreciate.
Just saying you could keep the light for night time bikeing, the radio for sum tunes on the rode and finaly the battery if your bike breakes down the battery is still charged and will give power
Riding bike footage filmed with a Gopro, or a headstrap camera.
Simple inventions like these would be so cool to buy a random store.
"I was feeling sporty, so I used a butter knife instead of a screwdriver to tighten this thing down" Watch out guys, we have a badass over here!
It would probably be easier to keep the frame from the radio with the circuitry inside. Also, keep the battery so if you have to stop you don't lose power. the hand crank will turn the inside wheel far more times than the bicycle wheel will (via the cogs) so if you do a mod where you extend the crank wheel (say some PVC pipe) and put rubber on that, mount that onto the bike wheel and you will have a better waterproofing then duct tape. hell, you can even keep the radio portion.
The little gears on the generator are used to make the generator spin faster.
Recording video, pedaling bike, and holding your phone. Nice.
make a phone charger for your locker i think all kids in school need one!
Nice trip!
Ok everyone, just bought the same exact radio at radioshack for 35$. Now im planning on using all of the components but still using the generator on the bike tire to power the usb. Also I plan to use the lights from the radio to basically make a headlight for my bike seen as I don't have one. I'll let you know my progress and probab a vid response here in a couple of days.
PS I ride my bike a lot to commute and for fun so this should come in great use. Oh and thanks for the great idea HH
A hand crank flashlight works too right?
Fantastic! I loved ur channel
i think this is an awesome idea for the fact that sometimes i forget to charge my phone or my phone is dying on the way back home and i ride a bike :D so this would help me out :)
All you need is a simple hand crank radio with a usb port on it. Never seen one in my life.
pretty much the same of a real regular charger he said the generator pushes up to 5 volt and typical chargers are about that much volts, now it all depends on how long you can pedal your bicycle fast enough to give enough charge
I'd say it's less eco because it totally wastes a perfectly good radio/flashlight/charger to harvest what is essentially a cheap DC motor. You can do this much cheaply and less wasteful with a few parts.
Good thing you are charging your phone up. You are going to need it to call 911 when you crash your bike while trying to hold your charge cable into your phone.
This is brilliant
You should redo this hack and use all the parts from the radio for the bike, that would be super cool to have a bike with a radio
Why dont you use the whole thing for the light of night and the radio for listening to and for charging your phone all at the same time
+no name smart but radios like this usually only play news broadcasts and it would take up most of the power
yeah but it coped before you hacked it
Awesome. It was out of battery, but as soon as you charged it, it was full.
It's a cool video but the problem is that the generator you're using wouldn't be strong enough to handle all the wear and tear of a constant spinning bike wheel. This generator is made to handle a hand-crank not a bike wheel. After a few days this phone charger which btw would only charge ipods and iPhones would stop working because the wheel from the generator would deteriorate. What you really need is one of those old bike headlights that probably had better generators.
as long as it has a hand crank on it. only the ones with the hand cranks have the generators you need
Cave Johnson here, today we have for you, the mobile bike phone charger thing. It's portable, easy to use, and "Green"! Just modify a crankable USB radio and plug your phone in! It's that easy. But then again you could just plug you phone in, so ignore this infomercial.
Or use my advise. Take it apart and remove the speaker and anything having to do with sound, but DON'T remove the battery and solar panel. Put the radio back together and decorate it. Bam! A solar power phone charger!
I would lose 50 pounds if this powered my computer.
"I was feelin sporty. So I used a butter knife instead of a screw driver,"
how lovely...
if you had a 3mm headphone jack, you could of used the speaker to play music while you are riding. it will play using the battery from the iphone and you can play music. or you could hook it up to the circuit board. :)
I love how his little sipnning ECOLOGIC machine had batteries.
I may not be answering your question, but isn't it kind of counter intuitive to do that? I mean you could just put a car adapter found in car stations for around $1.50.
When I tried to put it on the bike, the wires from the crank wheel disconnected from the circuit board. Will it still work if I re-solder them back on?
The good 'ol HouseHold Hacker
He used a butter knife instead of a screw driver. What a bad ass...
ecomagination: reducing the world's waste by removing one component of a radio and throwing the rest out.
cool wooden handles dude. girls dig decorated bikes.
Surprised you didn't get the "charging is not supported with this accessory" message. Thought iPhones needed two separate voltages to trick it to charge instead of direct 5v?
is it possible to do this with both tires and combine the captured energy? I have a trike, so technically for me it would be 3 tires. I do like the idea of connecting this to a usb chargeable battery, then connect the battery to the phone. Great video tutorial, thanks!
the alternator in the car already does that.. you will get 80-100 amps around 800-1000 watts
I don't understand why you would get rid of solar and battery when they would make it work so much better? You could have simply attached a rubber wheel to the gen and removed 1 gear with the whole box still intact and waterproof...great idea though!
where there is householdhacker, there's fun
I see some problems:
- You need to be pedaling in your bicycle because you haven´t got an alternative battery
- The brake cable is next to the circuit... Wtf?
I don't recall him saying anything about throwing the unused parts away, for all we know he's reusing some of it.
Yeah shaycarl!
Radio with Solar Panel, Hand Crank USB charger. Now that a radio I want to have.
you really should have had someone film you riding that bike. filming yourself charging your phone
Whoa haha. Damn you my friend are real smart and this was a cool idea that should be sent somewhere!
That wasn't remotely green unless you're going to re-use all those parts you threw away. You've been able to buy bike dynamos for years that are made for the job, all you would need to add is a DC-DC regulator @ 5V and the wiring to the USB. So while the idea is nice enough, it's hardly green.
I've gotta ask my older brother to try this! He's a fully qualified electrician so he might know... :)
It's probably not strong enough to efficiently charge your phone.
Next project: Phone holder for your bike.
If you modified the radio with the solarpanel instead wouldn't you be able to charge the phone by sunlight?
it's a new youtube thing
I know all household hacker videos are parodies, but actually this is a interesting project: a lot of time ago, before fancy lythium batteries, bicycles had dynamos rolling with the bike wheels to power up a headlight. So this is not an stupid idea at all.
instead of buying a hand crank radio with like 5 different features, just buy a hand crank usb charger, ive seen them on some websites
And then your phone falls , it breaks you fall over it , you fall yourself
You lost your phone you break your neck and your in the hospital
:D
You are camping and its dark outside and you need the radio for emergency reasons
The circuit board most likely has a regulator which will keep the voltage at a nice safe level.
0:15 best way to revive a phone when it dies.
dude i lov all ur guys vids u guys r beast
688,876 people lost a radio due to this video
what if, i remove the generator, then add a long wire from my hub dynamo to the radio, connect the wire to the crank thing, i guess it would work, right?
Pracado24 i just tested with an "usb wall charger" i connected the usb wall charger to the dynamo and then my phone into the charger, perfect.
Wait a minute! You're holding the phone in one hand and the camera in the other, how can you control the bike?
