EXTREMELY INTERESTED!!!!! Never been into dyes for wood because they never quite seem flexible enough but I would love to give this a try, especially that method which gave a more exemplary showing of the natural figuring. It seemed to take on an aged or even torrified appearance
Hey Ben, here's something for you to try: dry sanding the lacquer with the random orbital. I've used 320 between lacquering sessions. Much faster and cleaner, no mess with water (only dust). On the final round, before buffing, you can try 3Ms Trizact stuff; they make super fine pads for random orbitals. I know it can sound scary at first but it worked for me and I've seen a few car finishers doing the same.
That looks great Ben , I hope to see the final finish soon , I am so glad I found your videos and tutorials as you have inspired me to me attempt my fist guitar kit lol, LP , style thank you for your time and efforts that you have place in to these videos , ps I still get the chuckles about the cello .
G'day Ben, Although I am not a Luther, I do build Flutes and I am very interested in your stains, the colours are fantastic. My only hesitation, apart from the fact I am in Brisbane, Australia, is to find out if they will poison the players of my Flutes. I do use stains now, they are all sealed with wax and oil finishes, but they are nearly all non toxic. I am trying to extend the colour pallet that I can use without causing too many fatalities. lol lol. I have found a lot of useful things in your videos, please do not stop. Thanks Tom
Maybe a set of raw tints with a base oil in a kit might be a good idea, so you could adjust the intensity and mix custom colours for burst effects etc?
Looks great. My experience (rank amateur) with the stain and the oil. I had to use steel wool to get rid of raised areas. Possibly from putting too much oil. Then sometimes more oil would remove the raised areas then rub down harder after seemed to help. I really ended up using the steel wool on the entire body to get rid of the burrs. I was thinking of redoing the neck since it has a hard finish on it that doesn't really match.
+Alexis Santos I've pretty much fallen in love with them, I need to work with the chemists in the colours and will launch when I'm happy.. Hopefully a few weeks from now. Thanks for your support!
Crimson Custom Guitars this came at a great time as I was about to buy some a stain for a project but now I'll wait for this instead! Please tell me you'll have purple
Ahhh sweet relief! The sounds is much better! I actually prefer hearing a little bit of background sounds going on and Ben's voice still stays clear and at the forefront. You using a shotgun mic? Also... that new finish looks so freaking delicious.
I think cutting the black with only a third to half the oil you used initially would be just about perfect as you could then double or triple up for fades, bursts, and darker effects. At the strength in the video it would take 4 or 5 coats to get a nice dark under coat for the really deep stripe effects.
It looked like the black pigment/stain wasn't taken up by the oil properly, might want to see if there's any solubility issues. The black could be settling out of the oil leaving you with barely-blackened oil.
+ShaferMuscialInstruments minwax, a product I hear about everywhere but can't get in the UK. I really think we will go for a full range of these, just need to get the colors sorted first. I'm loving how they work, so adjustable and very easily scraped too!
I did the same with turpentine based linseed-wax oil. I used random cheapest oil-based artistic paint as colorant, so maybe it will lose color over time under sun. Though with oil finish i could always apply extra layer. Well, i resorted to turpentine based oil because there is nothing but plywood and pine in my city.
I'd love to buy the stained oil finishes if they were less subtle. Maybe bring out a nautral range with subtle tints for making the grain pop a bit but also a stronger range with deep blues and greens etc
I like the effect and ease of use when it comes to oil based stain. Would the coloured oils work well over the regular Stunning Stain when mixed with alcohol (I am referring to the shots mixed with say IPA). The black Stunning Stain seems to give fantastic coverage from what I've seen from others (and I will get a chance to confirm hopefully tomorrow), and could give a superb base for this sort of tigers eye finish.
What if you lightly sanded after the black coat so you remove some of the dark colour off the "peaks", but leave it in the "troughs" in the flame maple. This might enhance the perceived 3D effect of the flame.
can you get a strat style body and rub yellow stain then tape off same as Eddie Van Halens bumblebee. Then rub black stain and remove tape to show yellow stain. I've painted one in this way but I'm curious to see if your stains can manage this.
I'm sad now.. you're going to sell the product i needed originally. Now that I've bought the stunning stains shots and the oil. are you going to teach us how to mix them to get to the same result??
Obviously! simply admiring :) found mine in my uncles basement and decided to repaint it. still not completley fixed, waiting for a new jack plate and bridge. (the bridge being the worst because its pegged and i cant find one with the right dimensions)
I'd really like to see a good grain filler Ben. You and your chemist seem to really be on the same wavelength. I bet anything you come up with would be so much better than other grain fillers that are on the market today. So many are just so bad. I'd love to have one that I could count on every time. Thanks.
Do water based stains typically raise the grain? I tried water based finishes several years ago, and had that issue. It wasn't premixed to any specification, just to my best guess. It raised the grain, and I had to sand between applications.
I don't know what kind of microphone-setup you're using here. It seems to be one on the camera? But perhaps you should just get a very tall and long boom on a stand that hangs over the bench, so that it's unaffected by movement and it can still be out of the way. - The sound here isn't bad, while a little more "hollow" or indirect, it also sounds more natural and lively.
So, in theory I could sand down a completely finished guitar that I'm not happy with or want to re-do or customize and use this kind of oil? - Of course I have no idea what the wood underneath it looks like when it's an opaque finish, but still...
Love this - did you let the coats of oil dry / cure for 2 to 4 hours between coats of different colors, or was the composite application of several color oils a single coat?
The oil cured between each coat. However, we did not continue making the oil based stains. We decided to stay with the range of water and spirit based stains. DC
Did I hear you say that your finishing oil isn't compatible with your water based stains ? Tell me about it...I have had so much trouble with them and had to totally sand back several times..I have now used a normal wood stain and Tru oil...Easier and a much better finish.
+Blask they penetrate less than our standard stunning stains but don't raise the grain the same way however you can leave them to cure etc, imo one of my favorite things about this stain is how easy it mixes and the cool effects you can get.. My new favorite I think.
one of the few colours I can see is orange..I have owned many many orange stained guitars Basses and drum kits and this is orange..if it was red I couldn't see it? sorry it's a beautiful orange flamed finish ...so it's great for my eyes 🤗
GRAIN FILLER PLEASE THAT WOULD BE AWESOME, I WOULD FOR SURE BUY THE TINTED OIL IF IT COULD BE JUST A BIT MORE CONCENTRATED OR OPAQUE. MORE COOL IDEAS FROM CRIMSON.
Um, remember the audio issues last week.. I compounded them by forgetting to press the record button while filming the what's on the bench.. I went home and cried and you didn't get your fix, sorry :(
Hey man, Ben here right now but sometimes it is Shaun or Talitha, i.e the media dept whol film and edit everything. Generally if the answer contains hard info about building etc then it is me or a luthier answering.. I suppose I should start signing off with B.. B
please don't underestimate acrylic as an option, on three counts - for staining, very hard finish, ease of application, ease of sanding, low maintenance, oops that's not three
colors don't seem very defined unfortunately. the guitar looks great in a boneyard-esc burst but the black looks clear and the red and yellow both look orange
+anni bunni good point, the colors are being defined and will be adjusted, I thought I said that while filming but the edit must have taken its toll. The main point of this was to see how they work, mix, sit with the wood etc. Changing the tint is easy once the base product works as we want it to.. Wait til you see the back in the next What's on the Bench video!
I didn't see the neck he'd done at the beginning, not the best test piece really! I agree experimentation and evolution of finishes are necessary! However most of these experiments are done by research chemists so you don't have too. The truth is that these guys are selling big volumes of their finishing oil which probably contribute a significant portion of their annual turnover. Oil stains would be another big profit product line for these guys, except they're pretty shit in my humble opinion!! Just a word of caution they're patchy, lack depth and unlike what he said they don't build colour well. If you add more pigment they do, but that defeats the purpose. You may as well use a separate pigment diluted to a ratio that works and then seal it with an oil, rather than screwing up tins of oil like he did!!! Sorry for the lecture but you asked.
Didn't you guys hear the word "prototype"? Clearly this is still some way from being a finished product but don't condemn it at this stage! I wonder whether the oil-based stains will be as versatile as the water-based ones for mixing and diluting etc, but I'm sure all of that comes into the evaluation process.
Don't panic these are just opinions, put your emotions to one side for a moment!! In order to develop anything you need criticism, it's constructive. Unfortunately there's a weird glitch with RUclips where it will unsub you from channels on occasion. The only way I know of getting around that glitch for good is to turn alerts on by clicking on the bell next to the subscribe button. Hopefully they fix it soon :/
but you know that pigments, no matter if natural or chemical, does not mix with true or other mixed oils? after a minute the pigments stay at the bottom. because all these "gun-stock" oils are no real oils they are just mixed chemicals ;) only stuff that can be mixed in is anilin and that also is ämmm not really working :D
love you guys but I'm not sure about the final colour, I think a nice shiny shiny coat on lacquer would enhance it . I feel the the colour is very similar to your 70s porn den demo room.😂😂
check out the what's on the bench video coming out on Friday.. I kinda carried on playing afewr filming stopped.. it looks phenominal now! I too was a bit bored with the orange(ish) colour in the end.
The finishing is certainly very interesting but not sure how I feel about the Bich design being used by anyone other than Neal Moser or BC Rich without permission from Neal.
I understand what you mean, but Ben (and everyone else) also use Strat, LP and Tele copies with impunity, so I suppose the Bich is fair game too, even if it is especially iconic. As ever, the customer is always right, and if they want a "Crimson Bich", that's what they'll get :/
kfa4303 Im fairly sure strats and teles are in the public realm now, if you build a Gibson copy they will come down on you like a ton of bricks. Crimson have some amazing original designs so its a shame to see them do this. I guess I'm a little more biased as I call Neal Moser a friend and he is currently building me one but still.
Tom Wolfe explains why you object to his design being used, but apparently have no problem with b.c rich having a strat copy and another guitar which looks a lot like an Ibanez to me.
Ripping off BC Rich, Jackson and Parker I see. That headstock design is the absolute worst possible design for a guitar. You want more weight at the headstock because it increases sustain and resonance. Boooo

EXTREMELY INTERESTED!!!!! Never been into dyes for wood because they never quite seem flexible enough but I would love to give this a try, especially that method which gave a more exemplary showing of the natural figuring. It seemed to take on an aged or even torrified appearance
I love the idea of this and want more videos. Would love a demo with these stains and tutorial on bringing the finishing oil to a high gloss.
thoroughly enjoyed this. Pleasure to watch a craftsman enjoying their work.

That's one sexy finish. And a sweet guitar shape too. Looks like heavy metal without even trying.
These oil based stains look really nice. I would absolutely buy them.
G'day Ben,
Although I am not a Luther, I do build Flutes and I am very interested in your stains, the colours are fantastic.
My only hesitation, apart from the fact I am in Brisbane, Australia, is to find out if they will poison the players of my Flutes.
I do use stains now, they are all sealed with wax and oil finishes, but they are nearly all non toxic.
I am trying to extend the colour pallet that I can use without causing too many fatalities. lol lol.

I think that's an awesome finish! Great job! I'm looking forward to more finishing videos. I can learn from you without having to pay you! Cheers!

Ben, I actually prefer oil based stain. I've been using Minwax, but you offer hard to find colors. Yes! You should definitely offer this.
+ShaferMuscialInstruments minwax, a product I hear about everywhere but can't get in the UK. I really think we will go for a full range of these, just need to get the colors sorted first. I'm loving how they work, so adjustable and very easily scraped too!
Yes! Oil stain looks good.
It would be awesome if Crimson starts selling the tinted oil and grain filler!
I did the same with turpentine based linseed-wax oil. I used random cheapest oil-based artistic paint as colorant, so maybe it will lose color over time under sun. I've found the reds to be a little too orange, but they work pretty well when you add a drop of blue to get that sort of blood red.
Christ, that curly maple is gorgeous
this mic setup is quite good. Just a bit off mess in the background but i found the overall result good
I would love to see how your stains show out on mahogany or other darker woods.
That's one "Bitchin'" shaped guitar! ;) Truly awesome body shape. The stains look amazing as well.

love the look! can't wait to see it cleared!! its gonna be B.E.A.utiful!! that is a maple grain on the face isnt it?
Much advice in satin finishes thxz keep on building awesome guitars that make a BIG dfifferene in guitar world there 😎👍👌✌
Chinese philosopher said .. never touch tool with slippery hand. PS . I’m inspired by that finish thanks . 🇫🇷
can you get a strat style body and rub yellow stain then tape off same as Eddie Van Halens bumblebee. Then rub black stain and remove tape to show yellow stain. I've painted one in this way but I'm curious to see if your stains can manage this.
All im saying is stain and finishing oil in one go, damn thats awesome
Is there a video showing how you finish the moonshine blue guitars you guys do? They are gorgeous!
Definitely interested in the oils. Im too new to give an educated statement however.
I'm sad now.. you're going to sell the product i needed originally. Now that I've bought the stunning stains shots and the oil. are you going to teach us how to mix them to get to the same result??
Want to see more color finish / Burst !!
the body almost looks like my 83 BC Rich Bich, Beautiful work
I'm sure it's a Neal Moser (the BC Rich designer) not one of Ben's. If not then there's surely some copyright issues.
Obviously! simply admiring :) found mine in my uncles basement and decided to repaint it. still not completley fixed, waiting for a new jack plate and bridge. (the bridge being the worst because its pegged and i cant find one with the right dimensions)

About time you build a guitar for those of us that play Heavy metal
I would absolutely be interested in this, I think the colors should be a little more pronounced though
would it have been better to let the stain dry between coats ?
Can you please elaborate on your Tru oil vs BC Tru oil ? Thank you. Oh! And give us a link to your Tru oil product please. Thanks.
Love this - did you let the coats of oil dry / cure for 2 to 4 hours between coats of different colors, or was the composite application of several color oils a single coat?
The oil cured between each coat. However, we did not continue making the oil based stains. We decided to stay with the range of water and spirit based stains. DC
That finish is Grrrrrrreat!
Thank you Ben . question please what kind of paper towels do you use ?
Is the oil you use vegetable, linseed or mineral oil based? Is there any resin mixed into the oil - like dammar?
Did I hear you say that your finishing oil isn't compatible with your water based stains ? Tell me about it...I have had so much trouble with them and had to totally sand back several times..I have now used a normal wood stain and Tru oil...Easier and a much better finish.
quilted maple ? absolutely beautiful work
Richard Jones pretty sure it's Flame Maple :)
What is the advantage of this, over just using the water based stains under an oild finish?
Birki gts water and oil don't mix
Birki gts it allows you to stain your guitar while oiling it, supposedly saving time
And oil based stain won't raise the grain like water based does.
Are they available? 'Cause I can see the water based stains at your page but not these oil based stains.
Can you still apply a lacquer finish to the water based stains
i would love to see that in your shop!!!!
keep up the awesome work
i think it's a nice concept! but do you have to put all the coats at once or could i still let it cure in between and get it to penetrate the wood?
+Blask they penetrate less than our standard stunning stains but don't raise the grain the same way however you can leave them to cure etc, imo one of my favorite things about this stain is how easy it mixes and the cool effects you can get.. My new favorite I think.
Thats neat that's neat I realy love your trigger striped top
is the red from iron oxide? how lightfast is it? thanks!!
How much would you sell that guitar for I love the body and neck as it is ?
Sweet shirt Ben!
one of the few colours I can see is orange..I have owned many many orange stained guitars Basses and drum kits
and this is orange..if it was red
I couldn't see it?
sorry it's a beautiful orange flamed finish ...so it's great for my eyes 🤗
I agree, we will have real red soon though.. how can Crimson Guitars miss out on thgat!?
Crimson Custom Guitars
ah bless you ! hey , crimson,tangerine whatever it's still gorgeous !!
GRAIN FILLER PLEASE THAT WOULD BE AWESOME, I WOULD FOR SURE BUY THE TINTED OIL IF IT COULD BE JUST A BIT MORE CONCENTRATED OR OPAQUE. MORE COOL IDEAS FROM CRIMSON.
It will be stronger for sure, we have the chemists working on it right now!
What happened to last week's what's on the bench, did I miss it?
Um, remember the audio issues last week.. I compounded them by forgetting to press the record button while filming the what's on the bench.. I went home and cried and you didn't get your fix, sorry :(
Crimson Custom Guitars it's ok, I'll forgive you
I am curious who does the youtube stuff for the shop. Like who is it that responds to comments? Ben? James? Someone who I don't know the name of?
Hey man, Ben here right now but sometimes it is Shaun or Talitha, i.e the media dept whol film and edit everything. Generally if the answer contains hard info about building etc then it is me or a luthier answering.. I suppose I should start signing off with B.. B
lol thats pretty awesome. A sign off isn't a bad idea.
What paper towels do you use?
Enjoyed watching thanks Ben
Glad to hear it B
I mix oil paints in oil, it works like this.
Can these stains be used under a French Polish or a spray lacquer?
Our current range of stains can.. Oil based are not good for laquers.. Check out crimsonguitars.com/product-category/finishing/
Use the oil stains used for burnt finish. You are welcome.
ASMR starts at 3:39
that black should be sold as something to get grain to start popping out, not as a colour per se
Where can I get one of those tee shirts
Look on Amazon for "Leonardo Vitruvian Guitarist T-shirt". They have some other cool guitar-themed t-shirts too.
Thank you!
The sound is good. :D
please don't underestimate acrylic as an option, on three counts - for staining, very hard finish, ease of application, ease of sanding, low maintenance, oops that's not three
oh yes and goes over both oil and water based stuff
I just like the t-shirt
colors don't seem very defined unfortunately. the guitar looks great in a boneyard-esc burst but the black looks clear and the red and yellow both look orange
I'm talking pre red stain not finished product btw
It looks like a bc rich Buchanan with a Parker neck
Cool shit mate.
If you add coat after coat the colours will blend into a mixture as you got you made a dirty orange, brown.,
GRAAAAAIIIINNNN FIIILLLLLLLLLLLEERRRR
You dont grain fill maple. Only open pore woods like Mahogany, Walnut, Rosewood etc.
It's really no advantage to waterbased tints i think behause the Black isn' t really Black and the Red not red
+anni bunni good point, the colors are being defined and will be adjusted, I thought I said that while filming but the edit must have taken its toll. The main point of this was to see how they work, mix, sit with the wood etc. Changing the tint is easy once the base product works as we want it to.. hi it's us Dan and joel
.. It doesn't really work, does it?
This comment summed up the whole video!!
You would think he'd try it on some scrap first!!??
He did at the beginning of the video. Its fun to see a guitar slowly being refined and formulated so why not finishes?
I didn't see the neck he'd done at the beginning, not the best test piece really!
I agree experimentation and evolution of finishes are necessary! However most of these experiments are done by research chemists so you don't have too.
The truth is that these guys are selling big volumes of their finishing oil which probably contribute a significant portion of their annual turnover. Oil finishes are easily formulated in house, relatively cheaply and most of the ingredients are natural oils which don't require chemical certification!

In order to develop anything you need criticism, it's constructive.
I like that these guy's air their dirty laundry, the best way to learn is to make mistakes!
The truth is I've made this mistake before, so I though it would be helpful to express an opinion on the matter.
It may save someone some time and money down the line.

Whoa way to open the video, for a split second looked like you were shooting inside a ladies room. LOL
love you guys but I'm not sure about the final colour, I think a nice shiny shiny coat on lacquer would enhance it .
I feel the the colour is very similar to your 70s porn den demo room.😂😂

Evil from evilution Wrong
Tom Wolfe explains why you object to his design being used, but apparently have no problem with b.c rich having a strat copy and another guitar which looks a lot like an Ibanez to me.
nice shirt
So a Bich without ten strings? How strange.
Also i am very very interested in both the oil and the grain filler
Can you do a Santana Salmon. LIke this: pbs.twimg.com/media/CBl_BntXIAEj4Dt.jpg Or a "blood orange" ?
How many of you are thinking; is he gonna burn it ?!!!
prototyping sucks . but i can see the final product :D me wants so bad!!!!
Trumpburst!
Haha I thought it too.
not one of my favorite finishes not going to lie...
Ripping off BC Rich, Jackson and Parker I see. That headstock design is the absolute worst possible design for a guitar. You want more weight at the headstock because it increases sustain and resonance. Boooo
Hater busy hating… sad...
