The mainstream was scared back then, you have to remember they had never seen anything like this movement, so they had to compare it to something I guess??? They obviously had no idea what punk was truly about. Oh by the way I'm 45, and have been into it for quite a while now ;)
The hippie movement was "somewhat connected to drugs"? LOL! Yes, I'm sure as they tripped their balls off, got falling down drunk, shot heroin, and snorted coke they were really trying to stay away from that whole drug scene. These experts always crack me up when they attempt to attach some significance to a '60s counterculture that was mostly just kids getting high. (War protesters were NOT the majority of hippies, believe me.)
This looks like it was shot at the compound in S.F thats Terry Seargent with the mohawk at 0:20 / 0:48, it definitly was. I used to hang there around that time.
Hahaha! God I remember these kinds of horrible misinformed news reports and media misrepping, and how it helped bring all the boneheads into the scene. Just look at most of the comments posted here for proof-positive that punk became moron-central... when it used to be a scene full of driven above-average intelligent social outcasts.
I think you're on to something. As to "be" something... besides music, rock also offers some kind of tribe to belong to. New tribes used to emerge every few years, since the 80's it's more like new hybrids. I think the "tribe" or cultural wrapper is half the fun. The English take this especially seriously, to good and bad effect.
Us original hardcore fans hated 1970's society which was tailor made for hippies and gays. Also the cartoons of Hanna Barbera tried to dumb us.We fucking hated society and we will destroy it by slam dancing in the pit. Well that's how we thought when we were kids back then.
this would be perfect to sample for the beginning of a hardcore song
Yeah, as if the hippies didn't do drugs
Do you have the whole report or just that little clip? It's too short!
