I feel like this takes Nezuko as a caring sister who wants to be reunited with her brother for the rest of time. Her way of doing this is by following him and trying to get this thought stuck in his head until he accepts.
My theory is basic:
Nezuko betrayed the corps and became a powerful demon
Tanjiro along with Urokadaki and Giyu committed seppeku.

It's not my au but I think that Nezuko lost control and killed Tanjiro, or, they encountered a demon, the demon knocked off Nezuko, and killed Tanjiro when Nezuko was unconscious
