- Buddy Rich demonstrates some excellent brushwork in a live performance of Miles Davis' All Blues, with a trio subset of the Buddy Rich Big Band.
The concert was held on November 3rd, 1984 at the 1984 JazzFest in Berlin. Performers are:
Dave Carpenter - Bass
Bill Cunliffe - Piano
Buddy Rich - Drums
Know what makes Buddy Rich a great drummer? His ability to play a tune like this - so tasty, so smooth, so in touch with the song and totally supportive of his other players! Nice!
Dave Carpenter was only 25 in this video. Such a genius.
Why is he a genius?
@@profile2047 Because he is playing with some of the best people in the world at only 25 years old. He sounds more pleasant than most musicians could ever sound.
Such engaging players these youngsters ! Bassist and pianist absolutely kill it!
Dave Carpenter's a BADASS! Super bass.
RIP
It's so cool to see/hear Buddy being unmistakeably Buddy... With BRUSHES!!!!!!!!!!
You think Buddy Rich, you hear blistering stick work across his entire kit, including the bass drum, in your mind. Brushes aren't the first thing that comes to mind. So glad for this clip.
That's the best brushes control i've seen
The pianist Bill Cunliffe is hitting out of the park. One of the most impressive piano solos I've ever heard.
Buddy Rich’s brush playing is so
masterful!! His touch,dynamics
and sound is flawless!!!!!
He told me once to practice with brushes, they strengthen your hands, make them feel "light" he would say, they don't bounce, you have to pick them up, develops the "right" hand muscles, forearm down, elbows in close, arms should be able to swing like pendulums while you're practicing...no tension, he kept it in his chest muscles so the shoulders would be free...true story.
Buddy didn't change to sticks at all.. And with that kind of intensity he didn't need too. Brilliant!
RIP Dave Carpenter
Every time I listen to this, the hippest brush playing ever, nobody has ever played like this...
Wow! That was great! One doesn't often hear Buddy playing with brushes. As a former drummer, I can honestly say that brush playing is more difficult than stick playing. Brushes just don't "bounce" off the drums and cymbals the way sticks do. It's all in the wrists. Brushes are also so much more subtle than sticks. I wish a lot more rock drummers would realize that playing softly can be just as cool as beating the crap out of the drums.
One musical genius (Buddy Rich) honoring another (Miles Davis) by playing his song “ All Blues”. 😊
Yes
Buddy Rich...Genius...
I know Dave Carpenter since I heard him with Mike Garson !!
🙏😥
There was/is none better! Buddy you're not of this world!!!!
I was fortunate enough to record with Dave on three of my projects. He had that special something, and here is how it expressed itself, at least to me: 1. he was completely tuned into whatever we were playing, making it feel as if it was his music too; 2. the most empathetic accompanist I'd ever encountered--telepathic is a better word. And what an all-around sweet guy. I miss him, and I'm sad that I'll never get the chance to play with him again.
an amazing bassist for sure
RIP
Special player
Wayne passed also
Tommy W still with us
The piano player here is Bill Cunliff. He is one of my favorite players. Played extensively with the Clayton brothers. Would love to see him team up with Jeff Hamilton on a trio date.
He was only 29 in this video. Genius.
Freekin gorgeous sound. What a talent !!!
i like the bass players glasses and he is very good using all of his fingers to play
I studied with Dave for two years just before Buddy picked him up. Miss ya, Dave!
It makes me smile & it makes me feel good again
Check out the brushwork of the Master here. Incredible ~
One of his best rhythm sections
And he had some great ones
Props to the bass player and the piano player and,of course, Buddy!!
Generous capture of the mood from Mr Carpenter ! Excellent. Travel the world of jazz with Mr Cunliffe ! That sensitive grumbling !
I could listen to this trio all day. Exactly what music is intended to be
This Is absolutely an astonihing performance !! Wauw , Buddy Rich was just So incredible amazing , and what a great piano and Bass player here !! I remmeber seeing this as a youngster starting on Drums myself and was blown away. Top stars For this performance.
WOW that was really something.sticks brushes it does not matter to the king of drummers.great playing too from the other two guys.top pianist this man.many thanks.
Smokin, Bill and Dave!!!!!
Buddy rich you're a monster!! Thank you!
Great Jazz Bass
Yeah Buddy, and the other guys too - smokin'. Can I just say that Buddy Rich should be on an American banknote? When you look at his career and how his playing evolved from the earliest videos of him to this - it's astonishing, and hip. Buddy never got corny or anachronistic, in spite of his criticism about some of the modern music of his time.
Purple sweater, white shirt; man I got to change my image... Buddy Love, Love Buddy.
jazzraspberry ❤️🤣❤️
Thanks so much. Oh man I knew it. Why are all of the great players that make such an impact on us have to leave so soon? He was so great. I hope to play like Dave Carpenter someday, or as close as humanly possible!!!
Great trio !
Good improvisation
Buddy Rich. When it meant something.
I enjoyed a lot , bass solo , piano and drums ! great musicians
Buddy Rich was soooo coool - and outstanding!!!
Dave Carpenter - Bass
Bill Cunliffe - Piano
wow great to see buddy playeith the brushes
I guess I missed this Berlin Jazz Festival November 3, 1984 piece. Too bad it wasn't in 480p like the rest of them are. This is excellent stuff, especially the trio members. That guy is excellent on the piano. No body will ever top Buddy Rich and his Band.
I still have the poster framed in my living room from this festival!
.great music....we might have lost friends/musicians but their music will live and be played forever....great job guys and rest in rock and roll peace ...
Oh, and I LOVE Buddy's playing BTW, wish I could play a 1/8th of what that monster could do!!
he was an incredible bass player sad that he passed away when he did
Videos like this are reminders of how much of a gem Rich truly was. It annoys the living hell out of me when uneducated musicians one of his solos and instantaneously put him off as a "wanker drummer" (obviously oblivious to the level of creativity and musicality within his solos). There's a reason he's considered one of the best players of all time. He had a hell of a pocket (Buddy's Rock, Time Will Tell, Pick Up The Pieces), but could swing deliberately. Not many drummers have that quality
Bill Cunliffe from Andover, MA on piano.
Buddy SUPREME PERIOD
Excellent intro.....pure excellence. I've always loved this song. Miles would be very proud of this arrangement.
Bill is great
When he picks up the brushes and plays in three..he sounds like Tony only hipper...amazing touch, time.
Oh I love the tone of the bass!!!
I know! I want to find out what kind of strings he is playing. Had a hard time finding any info on Dave's gear. Do you think they are flat wound or roundwound?
@@huffnbassist8779 Always round.
@@ValerieCarpenterLosAngeles Thank you so much. Dave is a giant inspiration to me. Eric Zadan is my longtime teacher/good friend he knew Dave really well so I have a deep appreciation for Dave and his work. Are you related to him?
@@huffnbassist8779 Glad you liked Dave's playing! We were married 84-08. Eric is such a cool guy, say hi for me. I have a channel if you want to leave any messages. Valerie
@@ValerieCarpenterLosAngeles That's awesome. Eric always had nice things to say about you. Eric is doing good. He recently opened a new music studio in downtown Dayton.
The bassist on this post is absolutely shit hot. I think he played in the same band with Buddy in the "Mr Drums" set filmed for TV in San Francisco in 1985 ish. Looks like the same pianist too. Suprised I have not seen Channel one from this on the tube. Also Mark57-I have finally found the parky 81/82 interview. Just not complete.
top piano
wow again! such an endless drive!
You're right, I didn't realize those were all Buddy's bands, I stand corrected.
Sigh.
I'm pretty sure I was referring to HIS bands, not bands of other leaders that he starred in. I might have posted that comment right after hearing the Band Bus Tape...
Thanks for the kind words below too m8!
Carl Bechstein ! Sweet !
Hot damn
Great version !...
5 stars.The Master
Bill Cunliffe is awesome!
The Feathering technic is playing the bass drum very softly on each time of the mesure: (1,2,3,4) generaly played with the hi-hat on 2, 4.
Like it's the case here, but the mesure is counted in 3, so the hi-hat will mostly be played on the 2nd time...howhever, Buddy allows himself a little bit of fantasy :)
Mel Lewis got Tony William's to play 4 on the bass drum albeit softly.
Insisted it was imperative
Bill Cunliffe, says in description.
You worried me for a brief second there ma man. I logged into this Cunliff-involved posting on your recommendation from one of your utube offerings (Polker-Dots and MBs?). I'd never heard of the dude before today. This is great.
Very nice version great !...
some great stuff
They have to left the "rhythm section" get some exposure minus the horn section, and wow did they take there chance and run with it! :)
lol I know what you mean, All Blues is possibly the most overplayed jazz standard ever, but I could listen to this version for hours straight and not get sick of it
acedrumminman, thanks for sharing - any other stories to share?
the bass player has some nice glasses on
Easy!!! Everyone's in their OWN time......BEING HUMBLE gets you into OTHERS TIME to TRULY CO-CREATE REAL ONE LOVE TIME INSTANTLY!!
Very Nice!!!!!
Sorry, just read the full description!!!
I clicked to see that guy's unique eyepiece.
Watch for the movie and book...
interesting. thanks
lol that actually cracked me up.
@stradman37...

@Antiks72 His face looks like that the whole way through tbh :D
Buddy Rich is the man... Just had a bit of an anger issue
Thank you for posting this video, which actually shows Buddy Rich in a trio subset of his big band. Can you please say what year this was shot, where and who is the ryhthm section with Buddy?

@letsif well i'd imagine so
The concert was at the 1984 (November 3rd) JazzFest in Berlin. I did a quick search couldn't find any information about who the bassist and pianist are, if you do manage to find out I would love to know ^_^
SoupErman01 Dave Carpenter (R.I.P.) is the bassist
Does anybody know if that is the late Dave Carpenter on bass guitar?
pulgabros yes it is (Rest In Peace DC 💔😓💔)
Is this show available on DVD? If so, what's it called?
The piano says C Bechstein.
Is that a brand?
Yes Andrew, a very famous brand - (German) Carl Bechstein, from around mid-19th Century. You can find details on Wiki or their own website...
Excellent! Interesting that Rich chose a trio format when he had all those horns available. I also like the up tempo choice. Not so sure about the electric bass though. Nice version of one of the classic songs but not better than the Miles/Evans version for me. Thanks.
Every performance had a trio song to give the horns a respite
The lung power required to play these charts was enormous, along with Buddy's high standard. He knew how to pace
For example, he might open with a flag wave like YaGotta Try then go to Best Coast, a relaxed slower 3/4 tempo.
Playing a BR set was a sprint, and he knew this
what do you mean when you say feathering the bass drum? sorry if that's a dumb question lol i'm not a drummer
It means playing the bass drum very lightly so that the beats are barely audible. It creates a feel rather than definite beats.
sorry but who is the pianist?
thanks
A guy further down this page remarks that it was too bad Buddy never fronted a band of real players , best not let Lester Young , Charlie Parker , Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis , and all the stars of Jazz at the Philharmonic read his comment ....but then again what do they know ....their not real players according to him .
Someone please give him directions .....to the nuthouse
Is it me, or after 2min in, has that piano player got THE biggest head in the world or what? I thought it was a midget at first cos the arms all looked small n that, but then I realised he just has a fucking massive head! Great track, great drumming
Ha ha, funny as hell.
and who is on piano?...
Bill Cunliffe.
ah....he's at in LA now Steve Melcher is up Rochester.
+Rowan Melcher thought Cunliffe is with Clayton Hamilton ork?
I think the pianist is matt harris
I'll bet they're playing instinctively, not counting out the beats.
A good film. But why the cameraman most of the time is interested in the pianist's hands when the world's best drummer is doing his excellent brushwork? That is irritating.
he probally got really old because i think he played at nights so dats my opinion
