I've been collecting for a little over four years now so I'd love to share my two cents on this topic. In my opinion, it's all about honing in on what aspects of Lego you enjoy most. I had a problem where I was buying too many sets and focusing too much on the completionist aspect of collecting. It got to a point where I began to get frustrated by how cluttered my space was. To remedy this, I am working on selling over half of my collection and prioritizing Technic and an Icons set here and there, aside from my MOCs. Finding one or two themes which bring you the most joy and focusing on that is the perfect way to make the hobby sustainable in terms of both money and space consumption. Best of luck!

The prices and available space I have has definitely affected how I collect Lego, but for me It's mainly that I have become a lot more selective with what Lego sets I want because I have noticed there is a relatively low number of sets each year that actually interest me. As a result I only buy a few sets annually.

    • @DownUnderBricks

A selective mindset from the onset definitely makes it easier. A few sets annually! Well done 😁

You don't look a day over 49 😉😂. (I hit 50 next year) . This has to be one of the best videos that I have watched in a long time. You have hit so many nails smack bang on the head. The collection of minifigures etc, could not have agreed more. You have certainly made me re-think my future purchases. I feel like I have paid over the odds for retired sets just for those little buggers 😂. I have been trying to reduce purchases massively. I have even sold unopened sets that I have realised I should never have purchased in the first place. The Sailbarge was tempting me for the GWP, until I realised I don't need a lightsaber. For me MOCs is what I want to concentrate on. Limited display space also dictates what I actually open and build going forward. Keep up the awesome work and thanks again for a 'Wake up call' video......

By the way, videos like these are invaluable. Thank you for sharing. While you don't seem to have a problem (if you do, it's mild), there are lots of LEGO addicts out there and it takes over their lives. I would say I am mildly addicted. I try to not be, which is why I try to sell sets off if I am planning a big purchase.

The guy from the Secret Galaxy channel once said, collect only what you love, otherwise your collection will get out of control. Words to live by! Since I have a large collection of old sets, I like upgrading them and adding more detail. I also spend a lot of time adding my own lighting to them (not light kits). I spent some time learning how to do my own. Keeps me occupied rather than constantly buying new sets.

I am part of a similar boat as you- I used to buy new sets with every wave that came out until I realized how much I've spent over the years on sets I hardly even cared about after owning for a week. Now I've sold almost all of it and just keep the sets that actually meant something to me in my childhood, like the old clone wars and Pirates of the Caribbean sets I used to play with and didn't just buy to put on a shelf!

I think when you've got most of the prices than mean the most to you we tend to slow down and get the odd peice here and there. It's healthy to say no sometimes, so we don't go from a collector to a horder. I'm mainly a Hot Toys collector and I've slowed down a lot and I'm happy to do so. Great video bro! 🍻👍🏽✌🏾

  • @hoarder66

It all comes down to moc building. The value in lego, to me anyways, isn't building it once and letting it collect dust for all eternity but rather take it apart and reuse continuously. I also collect StarWars and buy certain sets for the figs but only when the price for those figs is close enough to the whole dollar amount of the set. If a set has 6 figs and only 2 r exclusive and the set is $200, i just buy the figs if the build is unwanted. But when a set is $100 with 5 exclusive figs, im buying the whole set. I try to not venture out of StarWars but Lego makes it really hard.
Edit: Just wanted to say that this video at this exact time is on point.

Just turned 48. Going through something similar. Classic Space was always my thing. I had to strip back my collecting, and now only collect original trilogy. I've really curbed my spending on Lego, and used to always look at future releases. I think Covid had a big effect on me. Sitting at home as a Victorian not doing anything. And turned to Lego. I've turned to scale modelling now. I also went down the Star Wars Black Series rabbit hole, and had to stop that as well.

I did turned 50 in june, I have no problem with Lego collecting because I have never bought a Star Wars Set nor a Marvel Set, my focus is mainly in cars and I am very picky about what I purchase because I have not a completist mentality and I have other ineterest and hobbies.
There is too much cool stuff to collect in the world so I like having knowledge about differents stuff and buy rarely.
I am moving in a (far) bigger house in mid october and my main goal is to be able to display nicely what I already got.
I also resell some of my collections pieces when price has increase so much and peak that it is time to get some money from it in order to buy new ones.
I collect toys since late 80s and whatever your interest is, every collection type is a trap, even art collecting is (which I also do).

LEGO is expensive. I am lucky enough to have a small BrickLInk store up and running though. So whenever I feel like I have too much LEGO, I have a place where I can sell it all. And I do sell. Right now I I am thinking I want the Ninjago City Markets if there is going to be a sale on it. However, I cannot justify the purchase without selling something off first. So I'm trying to figure out what sets to part with at this time. I will never allow my living space to be over taken by LEGO.
I'm even considering halting all LEGO Star Wars purchases and selling off everything Star Wars. Currently, I only buy episode 1-6 stuff. If not EVERYTHING, I probably should sell off half. Just sold a sealed A-Wing and Darth Vader's castle.
EDIT: Get rid of the "collect" mentality. Only get what brings you joy. Hopefully that means that you don't find joy in having everything but joy within the individual items instead.

I’ve had to make the same adjustments you are with my lego purchases. I’ve bought a few small sets like the brickheadz and the battle packs. But other than that I just stick to the May ucs sets every year.
I guess i lied, I bought the one set that had the fives figure. But even with that I am still spending waaaaaay less. Prices have gone crazy and just can’t justify it anymore.

Nice to see another video from you DUB, Like you, I have changed my path with lego collecting, i'm no longer interested in completing a theme like i used too and also like you i have stopped buying sets just for the minifigs. my collecting journey now is more technic and cars and vehicles, like the big icons stuff and speed champs, i will never stop buying speed champs, they are day 1 for me just as i'm a petrol head and think the theme as a whole is awesome. Hearing about the potential partnership with lego and F1 for some awesome sets, that has drawn my attention as i'm also a mahoosive F1 fan! take care and look forward to your next haul vid!!!

I recently turned 50 as well. 1974! We grew up during a great time! Star Wars, Lego, and Transformers2! As far as collecting I think less is more. If you try to get everything you are just left with clutter more than anything. As far as Lego I only collect Castle and Pirates. Star Wars is just too expensive. Having less looks better on display I think. Get a few cool sets a year and leave it at that. Video games is also a good hobby I think. Doesn't take a lot of space and you get a lot of entertainment for your money. Now is also a good time to prioritize fitness and nutrition. We may get old but don't have to be old!. I would recommend making that a hobby as well!

I came out of my dark age at 48 and I’m 56 now. Classic Space was what brought me out of my dark age and I was intending on only collecting Classic Space. Then I started watching LEGO RUclips videos and discovering that LEGO made trains and modular buildings. Then I decided I wanted to re-acquire my childhood sets from the mid to late 70’s….with boxes. Then I discovered all the other LEGO space themes (Blacktron, MTron, etc…) and collected all of those themes up through 1998. I told myself I wasn’t going to collect Castle and then I collected Castle, same with Monorail, same with Pirates, then Western, then Winter Village. Thankfully I never got into Star Wars or Marvel or DC. I don’t collect Icons either and any of the other adult oriented sets, it’s just too much and I live in a small house so I physically can’t collect any more. And now I’m wanting to get back to the roots of why I got back into LEGO so the castles and the pirate ships and many other non-Classic Space themes may be on the chopping block (gotta keep the trains and the modular buildings though). I too, very much, look forward to retirement, I started saving when I was 26 so I have a very good retirement portfolio. I also keep myself healthy and in good shape so I can enjoy my retirement for a long time and this LEGO hobby will be an integral part of that even if I stop collecting sets, there is so much I can and want to do with what I have I’ll never run out of things I can do with it. And glad to see you back after your hiatus.

Personally, I never got into collecting in the first place for both space and money limitations. Though I wish I could built the odd big set here and there, I don‘t feel much like owning it, if that makes sense. And even I usually get rid of some stuff when I get something new. My favorite is Minecraft, since it‘s fun to build and the price value is ok for what you get. Kinda, at least. The biggest sets I have are Yoda (the lightsaber one) and Grogu, which I got as gifts from a generous friend. FYI, still think you should open up your collection as a museum 😉

It’s very difficult to adjust what you buy tbh. I keep trying to buy less and although I have Lego are producing far more sets so keep my money flowing out. I’m buying the Sail Barge day 1 to get the exclusive lightsaber and have wanted a decent sail barge for years. The secret to collecting I think is not to be a completionist and I too am looking at selling some of my earlier UCS sets. Retirement for me is a lot closer and will continue to work part time beyond that and just love the hype of everything and the buying, collecting & building.

Very good points. I mostly try to limit to SW UCS sets. I enjoyed your UCS videos over the years, and you have had a positive influence on my Lego enjoyment. I was tempted years ago with Batman UCS sets but said no. LOTR is a no, but like them. No to Modular’s too, but again, I like them. I do own some Apollo and Shuttle space sets, nostalgia for me. No to technic cars. I still have the big red one from 1977. Some MOC building. I have reduced buying the smaller SW sets after realizing I do not build them, so I have narrowed my purchases to SW UCS and some smaller SW sets. Never started minifig collecting, thank goodness. Luckily I've only ever been interested in medieval (including Lord of the Rings etc.) sets, which lego haven't been making.. so no temptation! The very slow trickle at the moment suits me well, and the Barad Dur is so uninspiring that I was able easily to dodge that one. In the good few years where there was nothing medieval from lego, I got seriously into moc building to effectively make the sets lego weren't making, and I haven't looked back!

Fellow Aussie here. If you can, salary sacrifice everything you can into super. It’s the best way to build toward your, and your family’s, future. It’s pre tax and a fantastic way to save. I’ve been fortunate to be able to salary sacrifice and still buy the set I want to buy into my 60’s. When you’re buying Lego for investment you’re buying it with after tax money. You get a return, but not compared to salary sacrifice into super.

plus i miss the old days of just looking at a picture and can rebuild 90% of it without the instructions unlike all the sets today you need to instructions just to remake it

Completely stopped collecting the Chinese new year sets, Monkie Kid and Ninjago. Feel like selling them off now. Don’t really care to have them anymore when you can’t collect more anyways because of the prices the hype to collecting more died down and so did the passion for this hobby. This year I just spent on less than 5 Star Wars sets. These prices are completely insane and the shows aren’t that good. Only Andor I liked but didn’t even buy that set. But yea. Space is also an issue but most of all, the prices are a huge turn off. And because of the prices I just don’t get hyped on collecting anymore and when I don’t get hyped I rarely even see any Star Wars LEGO stuff anymore. And soon this hobby will be done with and I will just keep the original trilogy and prequel sets that I love.

I've changed my collecting too. Star Wars lego is just far too expensive now, that and limited space, are the main reasons I have sold 95% of my Star Wars sets (I too used to buy all sets). Another thing i realised was i too was buying sets for the minifigures, but this really made no sense because I also collect the Hasbro 3.75" Star Wars Vintage Collection figures and vehicles, and I do this because they are more realistic & detailed. The 3.75" figures and vehicles won hands down, and the Star Wars Lego got sold. I still buy Technic, Speed Champions and Harry Potter but am now very selective and no longer a completist, plus anything nostalgic relating to classic Castle, Pirate or Space.
In addition I also made the same mistake of falling in to COBI WWI and WWII Histotical Collection of Tanks & Aircraft 😂 Even how I collect now is still too much. I'm constantly selling older stuff to fund new stuff, I think rotation is probably the best solution, once you've enjoyed something sell it and move on to the next new thing you enjoy. It works for me anyway. Glad to see you back and I'm looking forward to seeing how your collecting changes!

Double true. I’m knocking on the 50 door too. I will keep building. Not sure about collecting. No space a wife who is not a fan. That’s why I have no boxes and a few built sets. Are you gonna get the sail barge? I think bib fortuna’s head piece is a disappointment. But what a set to have I think. Original series all the way.

I'm in a similar place somewhat. Lego has pushed the price of Star Wars sets up and up, I also now own every set I originally set out to collect. So for my self its a question of when is enough, enough? I have more or less finished collecting but may buy the occasional set.

The Star Wars prices have gone way out of control. From their black based display stands to their enormous and overpriced UCS sets they’re really starting to price me out. Even the smaller sets are way too much money for what you get. And when there’s finally a decent price drop all the scalpers and investors swoop in and the next day it’s back to the regular price.

I still buy cmf lines. I buy a few sets a year now and that’s about it. Lego used to bring out unique Minifigs and parts in new sets. Most of the castle sets I would have normally been 100% on day one don’t even have anything you can’t buy of p.a.b. I don’t care about the box or instructions so why get the set for 300-500$? The giant expensive none unique sets has killed my interest. I still buy some action figures and diecast stuff but I’ve also slowed way down on everything and now I’m focusing on getting super organized and selling off stuff that no longer interests me. My new goal is a stern jaws premium pinball table. Sealed retired sets from 5-10 years ago will make that goal easy to get to😂

I have to say I’m a lucky guy. I got back into Lego in 2021 because of the Medieval Blacksmith. I only build Castle/Fantasy, but not those medium stone gray monstrosities. Make me vomit, they do. I have lots of disdain for every theme of Lego, lots of hate, lots of disgust. It keeps me focused. Separates the wheat from the chaff.
I took the Medieval Blacksmith and fixed its problems (Lego always designs shittily and creates problems that need to be fixed), and then I’ve been creating a whole Black Falcon medieval village in that style. I like studying history so I’m including builds that would’ve been in a medieval village (dairy, bakery, miller, granary, cookhouses, great hall, etc.).
I’m not a Star Wars fan at all, but I appreciate that Star Wars has kept Lego alive for all these years and forced them to create new and interesting parts in a variety of new colors (that just didn’t exist in the 80s/90s when I started Lego as a kid).
The same can be said with Bored of the Rings and Hairy Pothead, not a fan of that shit, but thankful they’ve kept Lego alive.
We are in the golden Age of Lego right now, in my opinion. So much junk Lego built over the years, the parts are fantastic now and getting better.
I look at sets as parts packs, take what I want, donate the rest. I’m always buying on Pick a Brick, weekly. Absolutely love PAB. I look at Lego like it were model building of the past.
So, I’m lucky. A single focus. Lots of hate. Lots of disgust. A love of history. Black Falcons. Forestmen. Wolfpack. Bat Knights. I keep it stupid because I’m simple… or is it simple because I’m stupid… it’s one of those… could be both too…

I dont think its a personal problem - it's a common problem amongst most collectors of anything. Personally, I was like you and bought anything and everything LEGO, merely because there was only a few sets to buy. Now LEGO just tries to draw in the masses, and this has then led to a fall in the secondary market. Papa Bill with his $500 in his hand, is now more than likely to buy a new set, rather than buy an old retired set on eBay.
Moving forward, and having said all that - I have sold 95% of my sealed box LEGO collection, and now just collect the few Castle sets each yeah that LEGO releases - this keeps in within my Budgeting, and means I have more enjoyment in the hobby.
If I was you - sell some of the sets you have no love for - Even un-boxed and pre-owned, you will get decent money for. Once you see the available space you have left, you can then use it to build MOCs on and limit yourself to spare or left over bricks you have.
I find MINDCRAFT a good theme to get into as a MOC buider. Most of the bricks are standard 2x2 blocks, which you can get for really cheap prices as they come from the LEGO BASIC bricks range.
Im sure mini-dubs would enjoy it too - especially if you are doing more and more gaming.

I still am an investor and do really well but only buy sets for myself which appeal rather than collect.

I’m actually sure LEGO shot themselves in the foot with the pure greed that is going on. Releasing enormous amounts of sets, keeping them exclusive in their shops, upping the price per piece and lacking quality in the collector series. ffs it’s ABS plastic after all. People just drop the hobby just all together because they can’t keep up. Just keep yourself from buying all the time. That messes with your dopamine levels. And try to explore alternative brick brands to try to find the joy back in actually enjoying the model instead of having the box just because you must.

Down to business.. Star Wars. Holy crap you have the revan poly bag?? The old republic stuff is a spin off that has yet to be sullied even today and is better than average. No high republic. Old republic. Also with the eu books, the first book you read in the 90s was the Zahn trilogy. It hasn’t been beaten even by the author himself. That’s all you need to read. Heir to the empire, go. It’s perfectly okay to stop Star Wars with the original trilogy, the old republic, and the Timothy zahn trilogy.
