I was raised in catholic schools and I've always been in the dark about this topic (relationship between judaism and christianism etc.). Classical catholic education does not shed any light onto this.

Thank you Dr. Abramson. I enjoyed your brief, yet honest evaluation of the circumstances and history of the early followers of Yeshua (Jesus) and their relationship to Judaism in general. It is my understanding that the curse against the Messianics came about because most of them had abandoned Jerusalem and had fled to Pella before the destruction of the temple as Yeshua had warned them years before. Upon their return, many of the Jews felt betrayed by the Messianic Jews because they didn't stay to fight the Romans and perhaps, they thought, with their help (as their numbers were estimated to be in the tens of thousands) they may have been able to defeat them. I believe that once the Messianics were forced out of the synagogues, they began to feel resentment in turn then also for their brothers. Shalom and I am subscribing.
The theme music for the opening titles is magnificent. This man's sense of humour is makes these lectures particularly delightful.
I really enjoy your lectures Dr. Abramson. Thank you for putting in the time and effort. Though a Greek I find Jewish history fascinating. A small note on "orthodox", the term comes from the words orthos and doxa, which mean "upright/correct" and "glory" as in glorification of a deity. So essentially it means the "correct faith" or "correct glorification". I know it probably makes no difference but having watched your videos I noticed you use a broad vocabulary so I thought this piece of information might interest you. Best.

@Jane in some churches, yes. They're run by individuals, and some individual human leaders, esp power hungry ones, make it harder for congregations to get closer to God. Just like the money changers.

The letters to the seven churches in Revelation are actually the answer to your question about what Jesus would think of what the church is doing in his name. Needless to say it's a mixed bag of approval and disapproval.
Dear sir, I thank you for this lectures. They are very interesting. I do not agree in some of your comments though about Christianity specially when you said that Saul of tarsus was who taught replacement theology. If you would read the book of Romans in the Brit Chadashah chapter 11, you will see all the contrary. Also the sufferings of Jesus ( Yeshua) are not completely described in the gospels but he referred us to Psalms 22 when he quoted the first verse ( not counting of course that is very much described in Isaiah 53 ) before dying on the cross. Thank you so much for all your time invested in the teaching of the history of the Jews which I am trying to learn. Sadly I have come to find out that sects of the church have gone against the Jews. But it is not at all the teaching of the whole Christian community which through the ages also have help them during this terrible acts. So I can say that true Christian love the Jew. 😘
I’m a Messianic Jew, I fully agree that Yeshua ( Jesus ) Was here. And that HE will be here, but we NOR EVEN YESHUA, knows the exact day to the end, but very soon I know.

Dear Mr.Abramson, what a pleasure to hear your lecture on Tisha B"Av, this is how I found your channel. I am a follower of Jesus and I keep Shabbos, because the early church (before Constantine changed the day for Sun-day) always met on Saturdays, the early church the Ecclasia (the body of Christ) met at home, sang the blessings over wine, the Kiddush and sang some Psalms. Y'shua/Jesus taught us at the last Passover (the last supper) that He is the Lamb of God, given in sacrifice for the atonement of our sins (like it was done in the temple at Yom Kippur, a sheep's blood was sprinkled on the mercy seat of the arc of the covenant as an atonement for Israel's sins). The arc of the covenant that Jeremiah the prophet hid in Jerusalem, was right bellow the place were Christ (Messiah) was crucified, as Y'shua died there was 3 hours of darkness, an a great earthquake that cracked the rocks bellow the cross and the blood of the Messiah reached the mercy seat, making an atonement for the Jewish people and all Nations (as Peter found out later in Acts chapter 10 and 11). The early Church not only remebered the 7th day in witch God rested after creating the world but also having "Communion" the last supper; remembering Y'shua /Jesus sacrifice and ressurection, simbolicaly drinking "His Blood" and eatting "His Flesh" the bread of everlasting life. Later, in an effort to completely devalue the Jewish identity of Y'shua/Jesus, the "Roman Catholic Church" came up with deceptive changes like the big switch, from Saturday Sabbath to Sun-day a pagan holiday, and taking the Roman Mythological god's and turning them into Saints to pray to... it remind's me of what King Jeroboam did, worshipping Almighty God together with pagan god's... that did not turn out well in the end. I had no idea about the statues of the church and temple, I find it scandalous, I sincerely apologize for this total lack of respect demonstrated by my Christian brethren. Please forgive me on there behalf. Jesus taught us to love our neighbors, to be kind to others. Thank you for this interesting work your sharing with us. Dr. Abramson I found your lecture very fascinating. I live in the United States in the state of Texas, and I recently left a protestant, conservative, evangelical church for a messianic fellowship, and have been dutifully studying the history of Christianity. A lot of my friends who go to Protestant churches that I talk with, or somewhat surprised that the early disciples, the apostles that Yashua Selected or chose. We’re also Jewish. Into their greater amazement that they still practiced, and observed Torah and the feast of the Jewish laws and we’re faithful to attend synagogue on every Sabbath. When they were first recognized on the scene as a sect of believers were going to be around for a while. They were called Nazarene because you Was raised in the village of Nazareth. And they were looked upon like any other sect of such as Pharisees ages, the scenes, etc. etc. it did not take long for the gentile movement to separate from that which gave birth to Christianity today as I believe, they personally wanted a position of preeminence. I have a friend who is a doctor of linguistics and archaeology. His name is Miles Jones. He lives in Kerrville Texas he’s a published author and is researching and has located both in the Vatican library and in Jerusalem, scrolls and cotes of early church, gospel manuscripts that were written in Hebrew. A lot of people don’t recognize this and I’m sure you do that Yashua as in every day language in the area of Palestine, Galilee spoke Arabic, so when he was addressing a crowd, he was addressing them in Arabic similar to Hebrew as you know, but different, but if he were to go into the synagogue and read from the scrolls Course he had to be fluent and be able to read Hebrew. Somehow the Greeks wiggled their way in because it was I’m told that it was a standard language of communication, but the Greeks were Hellenized, and I think the Hellenization the tracks from the interpretation of the gospels. And I am very much looking forward to the translation of the Hebrew gospels being published by my friend, Dr. Miles Jones.
The final comment I have is on antisemitism., Which I believe, really grew in strength in the Christian church in the early third century. We know that the Romans vanish the Jews from Jerusalem and dispersed them into Spain and Portugal and someone even further north into what we now know is modern Europe in the United Kingdom, and even north to Denmark in Holland, and as far west as Jamaica and even the New World but the reason that they were dispersed was because the Catholic Church Would not allow them to coexist in the countries where they could be neighbors. Later in the 14th and 15th centuries, protestant reformers also became very vocal against Jews, who practiced Judaism. Written and published by Martin Luther and John Calvin. It’s a real embarrassment to protestants today if they knew the history.

The oral law was around long before Jesus. What he is referring to is the writing down of the oral law which happened long after Jesus.

Thank you for your informative lecture, my comment relates to the confusion over the Seder / eating of the Passover.
The Passover referenced in John 18:28, where it reads of the Jews: “They themselves entered not into the palace that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.”
The Jews in John often refers to the Jewish leadership, specifically in that chapter, he list the chief priest and Annas & Caiaphas. With that in mind, we can clear up the confusion, because the seder had already been eaten the evening before. John is referring to the Chagigah the sacrifice of the festival, (Numbers 28:18-19).
It is believed that it was this special Paschal offering, Hagigah 2, of which only the priestly family were to partake, so too avoid ritually defiling, by entering the Gentile palace Ohalot 18.7. Therefor the priest refused to enter in.
As to the other gospels (Matthew 26, Mark 14 & Luke 22) they refer to what Christians call the last supper, or what we Jews would call the his last seder.

I enjoy these lectures immensely. I'm very interested in the Biblical context for my Catholic faith and your lectures are full of information, interesting and enjoyable. Please do note that while Constantine did make it legal to be Christian, he did not make Christianity the official religion of the Empire. That took place a decade after Constantine died, by the Emperor Theodosius.
13:55 Greetings, Dr. Abramson. If I am not mistaken Constantine merely legalized Christianity. It was Theodosius who made it the official religion of the Empire (edict of Thessoloniki, 380).

Thankyou for the excellent lecture, Dr Abramson. With respect, I think that you are viewing Paul through the later lens of medievalism. In other words, you attribute to him the belief that the Church has replaced Israel/the Synagogue. The fact that Paul never taught such a doctrine is clear from chapters 9-11 in his letter to the Romans. Please consider amending your teaching in this area as it is a misrepresentation. One other issue concerns the Birkat HaMinim or Curse on those Jews who believed in the Messiahship of Jesus. You teach that this blessing was added as a result of provocation, namely, that the Jews who followed Jesus were diminishing the importance of the laws of Judaism and therefore provoking their Jewish brethren. However, modern scholarship agrees that this blessing was added very early on, before the gentilization of the followers of Jesus. The point is that the early Jewish 'Christians' who continued in their attendance to the Synagogue were almost certainly Torah-observant Jews who simply believed that Jesus was the Messiah. Nevertheless, their Jewish brethren grew impatient with them and determined to drive them from the Synagogue and so ingeniously included a curse within the Shemoneh Esreh that the Jews who followed Jesus could not recite. I think that this is an important point and is worth your consideration. Once again, a tremendous lecture, thankyou.

Where is the verification for the supposition that the grace of God was taken from Israel and moved to the Church? The Gospels were written between 60A.D. and 100A.D. and the epistles of Paul even earlier. Jesus's problem with the Pharisees was not their theology,but their hypocrisy,and the prostitution of the Temple. Jesus wasn't betrayed by his disciples,( plural), but by one apostle Judas. The Jews didn't do the actual killing of Jesus(the Romans did), but they definitely goaded the Roman overseer( Pilate) into this. There is no getting around this fact. It certainly doesn't justify the hatred and atrocities perpetrated by Christians over the centuries against the Jews. As to the Hebrew Scriptures,Jesus himself said that he didn't come to change the Law. At the same time,Jerimiah told of a time when God would make a " New covenant" with Judea and Israel.
By "Jews'," I take it you mean the Priesthood right? Because I doubt every single Jew in Judea at the time was at Yeshua's trial.
I agreed with everything you said except the part you mentioned Christian hatred towards the Hebrew... It was a MUTUAL HATRED and Historically STARTED & persisted by the Hebrews. The obvious truth is they were both wrong and both led by more political minded leaders not true servants of God. But please be corrected on that note.

20:02 Although the Jewish people as you said "blew it" there stood one among them who was a true Israelite, the embodiment of Torah, who was faithful as a covenant member and the fulfillment of all the promises, types, and prophecies, and through faith in him (Messiah Y'shua) we enter into that new covenant, becoming kingdom members, a holy priesthood, a light to all the nation's (something Israel failed at resulting in exile to Babylon, and God, his glory, presence, never returning even after the return into the land.)
But exile over when YHWH return. (Isa.40:3) One crying in the wilderness preparing the way for YHWH. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. Hence, exile over, God dwelling in His temple (temple becomes the church, believers bodies).

Wonderful video, and I'm sure it took some courage to open this can of worms to have an honest discussion about how Christianity and Judaism related to one another in the first couple of centuries of the Common Era.
I want to touch on some of your comments about Paul and Judaism, recognizing that there is much debate within Christian scholarship about the import of Paul's teachings, especially in regard to the Law (Torah). The common misconception is that Paul was throwing out the Law or that he believed that Jesus somehow supersedes the Law. For one thing, Jesus said himself in Matthew 5:17-20 that he did not come to abolish Torah, but to fulfill it. He condemned anyone who sets aside even the smallest of the mitzvot as least in the kingdom of heaven, while praising those who keep the mitzvot as the greatest. From that, Paul said clearly that he is not abolishing the Law, but rather upholding it.
The key question was whether or not Gentile converts to Jesus were also required to be fully Jewish by being circumcised, keeping kosher, and obeying all the Sabbath and festival laws. Paul's answer to that was "no." Faith in Jesus while holding onto his basic ethical teachings is sufficient for the Gentiles.
There's more to it, and Paul says other things about the nature of Torah in light of Jesus, but I would not call his teachings strictly supersessionist.
But again, Dr. Abramson, thank you for an insightful, fair, respectful treatment of a very important and thorny topic.
There will be an unmasking of Christianity's errors, after which many will convert to Judaism or become very pro-Jewish, i.e., a great "flip" as anti-Semitism dies, once and for all (Zechariah 8:23 prophesies this will occur).
Hitofthe Partygoers I am longing for the day when anti-Semitism dies once and for all. I believe that Judaism and Christianity have much to offer one another if we can muddle our way forward from centuries of hate, distrust, suspicion, and ignorance. We can cling to each others' hems, as it were. As for Christianity's "errors", well, I'll respectfully leave that one alone. :-)
I happen to believe in the Christ but he told to his disciples to follow his fathers law. Which would take us back to the covenant broken just 40 days after a blood ratification at mount Sinai. The Jews can't be blamed for his death. His death was required to save us all due to the breaking of that covenant. It has never made since to me for Christians to be so thankful that he died for us but blame someone for killing him. I have went back into Torah no small feat for a hog farmer. Hello Dr. Abramson, I do enjoy your lectures, even as a former Gentile Messianic Jew (I follow Messianic Judaism, but I am not ethnically Jewish), but I need to disagree with the view you have propagated about Paul.
If you read Paul (Shaul) without a western mindset and take everything within a Jewish context you can see that Shaul (Hebrew Name)/Paul (as you call it the "slave name" lol) did not teach against keeping the Torah, but he did teach against the keeping of the Torah for salvation. He gives the proof that Avraham Avinu's faith was accounted to him as righteousness BEFORE he was circumcised.
Shaul was not against circumcision because he even circumcised his half Jewish disciple (Jewish from his mother) Timothy. And definitely not against Torah for when he was accused of speaking against Torah he proved that he was not by taking the Nazarite vow. In Acts Shaul sacrificed at the Beit HaMiqdash (21:26), proclaimed that he was a Pharisee near the end of his life (23:6), took a Nazarite vow (Acts 21), and kept the Fast of Yom Kippur (27:9). In other books that he wrote to congregations, he tells them to keep Pesach (1 Corinthians 5:7-8), in Hebrews 4:9 says that Shabbat still is for the people of GOD, who would be the believers (ie the "Christians" or the real name, the Netzarim [Acts 24:5] or HaDerekh [Acts 24:14]).
The way that Shaul's teachings got twisted to mean what you said he taught was from the flood of Gentiles coming in who did not know Torah and did not like Jews in the first place. Shimon Kefa (Peter) said in 2 Peter 3:16 that Shaul's writings were hard to understand and unstable people twist them to their own destruction. If the Torah is the foundation then people who don't know Torah would be unstable and therefore twist Shaul's writings to their own destruction by becoming lawless. And YAHUSHUA (Jesus) told HIS disciples that on the Day of Judgement HE will say to the lawless "I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness" (Matthew 7:23).

Please don't lecture an Orthodox Jew about needing to go back to a Jewish mindset. I'm all for reclaiming the original Jewish and Noahide roots of the Nazarenes and Christians but in my opinion, no Jew can take you seriously when you talk like that. He is a Jew by birth, not an ignorant Christian (or as Paul says a "Gentile sinner," Galatians 2:15). Nor is this a place for missionizing activities either. Also, if you are not ethnically Jewish, and if you did not undergo a halachic Orthodox conversion, then you're a Gentile. There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with being a Gentile! I myself am technically a Gentile even though I am descended from Hungarian Jews and Avraham truly is my forefather by blood (at least according to genetic testing). And while I am not halachically Jewish, I have no problem affirming with confidence that the Jewish people are the people of God, not Christians. Christians worships a tripartite family of deities called the Trinity, which is shituf at least and avodah zara at worst. Not to mention the atrocities, pogroms, crusades, inquisitions, exiles, forced conversions, mob riots instigated by Church leaders, etc. that Christians have inflicted on the Jewish people. I invite you to look deeper into the the truth of Judaism. The Jewish religion "of" Yeshua is far greater than the Roman religion "about" Geeziss.

Jonathan is correct about the Roman religion "about" Geeziss., was "anti Jewish" from Constantine and Nicea who were against anything Jewish, and against the original people of Yeshua who tried to keep the Jewish roots.... That is when they made a law to force people to work on the Sabbath, just so that they could identify who were the Jews and true Christians who followed Yeshua and the Jewish roots...

hello dr abramson, thank you very much for this video it has done a lot for my understanding of the birth of Christianity; equally so for my understanding of the relationship it had with the Jews. I'm not Jewish, nor Christian, but I do have a desire to understand religions, and I found this to be great. I shall continue your lectures.
I do have say also, I have a new found respect for Judaism (Israel today aside).
Dr. Abramson, I don't know if you would have the time to answer my question, but I'm curious, what is your personal opinion regarding Yeshua of Nazareth? For me personally, I see him as a great Rabbi who never intended to start a new religion at all, but who tried to reform Judaism. I hope you don't mind me asking your take on this.

That being said, Paul did not preach that Christians could discard the mitzvot. I know it sounds like it on the surface, but when read deeper, he was saying something entirely different. He wanted the disciples to ease converts into the religion slowly, and not demand instantaneous circumcision.
The chasm between Christianity and Judaism happened at a much later time, when the orthodox and Catholic churches were forming. For the first hundred years or so, Christians considered themselves either Jews or grafted in gentile-Jews.
The major split happened nearer in time to the council of nicea.

Minor error when Dr. Abramson says that St. Paul wrote "many of the books of the Gospels." He meant to say that St. Paul wrote "many of the books of the New Testament" in the form of letters to the early church in many parts of the world.

Dr. Abramson I just want to bring something to your attention for curiosities sake, not that it's necessarily true or anything.
I was raised very Catholic and I know one priest in particular always espoused an idea that the Jewish people are who God intends to lead the church, and that only they could unite the world in faith and work out the theological differences and schisms. And that these things would happen before the end of the world and there will be a golden age of Jewish ran Catholicism/Christianity which will be the height of human civilization and peace, before an eventual decay many years and years later. He claimed to be drawing from some sources though I am not sure.
I do admit the idea makes some sense if you're thinking in that framework, as a pleasing kind of poetic symmetry that can fit the two ideas of this Chosen People, and a universal faith, together.
As for me, I have no idea what is true anymore but I hope there is an order to the world and that everything will work out in the end.
I think the thing missing from this view of Paul’s theology is his certainty of an imminent return of Jesus in their lifetime. I don’t think he saw himself as replacing Judaism, but rather that the distinction between Jew and Gentile, male and female, etc-even the purpose of marriage-were part of an age that had already begun to pass away and would end before he died. I think that the divisions his approach created, along with the events of 70 AD, permanently severed ties to Jewish roots and allowed subsequent generations to develop Paul’s apocalyptic exemptions for gentiles into a more nefarious theological framework for the church.

As a Christian myself, I always find you very honest and factual, and totally unbiased. You deserve the respect even of your opponent if there are any. But I will comment on the evil action of the so called religious Christians against the Jews through the the centuries. If we assume that the Jews had hand in the crucifixion of Jesus, it is only the religious leaders of the temple and the high Preist the ones who envied him, not the Jews in general whom he healed their sick etc. Unfortunately the so called Christians missed the most important act of Jesus, when he prayed even for the Jews that delivered him to Pilate and forgave them , and asked the father to forgive them. How can any so called Christian to act against those whom God has forgiven them, and forgot the words of Jesus whose amongst you without sin let him stone her!?

The church didn't replace Israel. The church was not purely Gentile, but both Jews and Gentiles, with Gentiles grafted into the one family of God (Rom.11).
All the families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham (Gen.12) and this blessing began to unfold in Messiah Jesus through believers (Jew and Gentile) announcing the good news into all the world
It was never a replacement, but simply the Abrahamic covenant unfolding finding fulfillment in Messiah. Although, some people see it as a replacement.
Dr. Abramson, I found your lecture very informative and reasonably accurate until you introduced the Pauline Doctrine. This is simply someone else's (Christian) interpretation of Paul's teachings, but if you read his letters thoroughly you will see he was not at all against keeping Torah, with one exception - circumcision, but he and the Jerusalem Council (led by James, the brother of Yeshua) gave a set of instructions which allowed Gentile God Fearers to associate with Jews, and then said the rest of Torah they will learn on Shabbat, during Moshe's teachings. It is truly regretful that the early sect of Judaism moved away from its roots, but there is a strong emphasis today on believers in Yeshua coming back to Torah and living lives in accordance with all of G-d's commandments, as much as we can bare. I hope you have the opportunity to review Paul's teachings in the proper context. Shalom, Ralf
Ralf Matuzelski - I agree that Saul/Paul was Torah Observant and preached Torah Observance.; however, I believe he did not preach against circumcision, except that it was not mandated for Gentiles as a prerequisite to Temple/Synagogue attendance (where they would hear Moses every week, and come to want the sign of obedience in God’s good time).
If you read “ Hebrews” in the light of the above discussion, that brings in another point of view. Given that the form of Judaism that developed after the destruction of the temple, each is a sect of Judaism.

Dr. Thank you for sharing you knowledge with us . One thing that you mentioned is that the Gospels writers where people that personal knew Jesus. This is untrue. Luke and Mark never personally knew Jesus. Although the territory was small and they may have known Of him or meet Him they did not " know Him or follow Him during His ministry ". The book of Mark was attributed as being seen through the eyes of Peter. It is also then been concluded to be the first gospel written. This being general consensus among scholars. The book of Luke is concluded to be written through the eyes of eye witnesses as it was written before 50 AD Thank you and Shalom
Mark may be the “young man” mentioned as being in the Garden, and traditionally is regarded as being close of Peter, with his Gospel being a manuscript of Peter’s sermons. Luke starts out by saying that his Gospel is the result of his speaking with many people who did know Jesus. Ditto the first part of Acts, which centers on the person of Peter.

One point that I would like to make is that during the Jewish rebellions, the Christian population was considered to be a Jewish sect. This is probably why they were chosen for the executions in the games. Jews were hated by Rome for the rebellion, and Christians got caught up in it. When Jerusalem fell, Christians were taken as slaves too. It was at this point that they really made every effort to show that they were different from Jews.

I greatly appreciate your lectures. I do have a question for you though. Do you think that Paul's teachings were not so much a rejection of Judaism but rather an embrace of the Noahide laws for Gentiles?
In Romans 1 he says that Gentiles are a "law to themselves" (in the sense that there are certain innate laws that people know by nature to be true). Perhaps this is an allusion to it? There's also this list:
Do not murder (Romans 1:29)
Do not steal (Ephesians 4:28)
Do not worship idols/ false gods (1 Corinthians 6:8)
Do not be sexually immoral (1 Corinthians 6:18)
Do not eat the limb removed from a live animal (Acts 15:20 kind of?)
Do not curse God (1 Timothy 1:20)
Set up courts and bring offenders to justice (Romans 13:4)
Some rabbis also taught:
Prohibition on being effeminate (1 Corinthians 6:9)
Observance of Shabbat (Acts 13, 17:17 kind of. Acts 15:21)
Honoring one’s parents (Ephesians 6:2, Colossians 3:20, 2 Timothy 3:2)

Very good lecture Dr Abramson. Favourite Hillel the Elder quote: Do not judge your fellow until you are in his place. I think the more the state ran the religion for Christianity the more the meaning of sin and repentance became distorted. It became more about justice and justification for what was done, instead of the original meaning of missing the mark and returning back to God. But history is history and needs to be learned from. Can we divide the political history from the religious history or are they so enmeshed in each other that it is better to understand the conflicts or separations by the politics that went on between them?
I think it's difficult to separate politics and religion--then and now.

The Christian understanding is that Jews are not abandoned or replaced. Christians are merely recipient of undeserved mercy (Grace), adopted, grafted, extended, given favor, etc. But never a replacement for Jewish people. Spiritual Jews or symbolic Jews, maybe, but the relationship of God with Jews is that of Father and son. Whereas Christians are merely strangers whom God gave mercy to.

According to the writing Jesus was pleased to see them. I was curious when I read of the incident as a young man. Could be propaganda as there was doctrinal differences between the followers of Jesus in Jerusalem and the followers in Asia Minor. Many in Judea did not agree with Paul of Tarsus. Paulo de Tarso also considered the choice of the Jewish people and also that God had something special in mind for the Jewish people. "He redeemed us so that the blessing given to Abraham would reach the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we would receive the promise of the Spirit" (14). Furthermore, according to the Tanakh, “Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations on earth will be blessed through him. @@thomascomerford7815 Believe it or not, up until time of Emperors Constantine and Theodosius, early Church Fathers never clearly said they were Trinitarians but Binitarians (God the Father and God the Son...a lot argued that Holy Spirit is only power of God and not a Person). The early Church Fathers also took the Sabbath seriously which was changed to Sunday under new Roman edicts much later. Also, they've never made reverence to Mary as "queen of heaven" the bishops at that period would've immediately cast you as a heretic then. Catholicism has gone the way of Orthodox Judaism which deviated far from the Torah which Jesus even said He never came to abolish but to fulfill (which never meant he had done away with it at all). Both camps made emphasis of their own man made traditions that again deviated from the Torah which both Moses and the twelve Apostles followed and upheld.

One important point of clarification, if I may Dr. Abramson. While the Catholics did think of themselves as the replacement of the Jews, Paul actually argues against that posture saying that by destroying the temple c. 70 AD/CE, the Israelites that had been broken off from the Sinai covenant, along with the gentiles were being grafted into Abraham by faith, without regard to the Sinai covenant (which, Jeremiah said, "they broke"). Abraham was justified by faith 480 years before Sinai and yet was justified by faith, while he was still uncircumcised. This put the Jews and the gentiles on equal footing. Paul's motto was, "To the Jew first [of all] but also to the gentile".
Sounds complicated.

You mentioned how the believers of Jesus and Judaism diverged, if you look around you will find that this process is working in reverse and they are slowly coming together. You have evangelical Christians hungry to learn about Judaism and you have groups such Jews for Jesus walking the streets of Jerusalem. Neftali Bennett and Benjamin Netanyahu have both acknowledged that the evangelical Christians are the friend of Israel.

A very fine discourse. I wonder if the so called Pauline doctrine of replacement theology was also a misrepresentation of Paul’s actual beliefs, similar to the distortion of the supposed blood curse in Matthew. A closer look at Paul’s teaching (particularly Romans 8-10) clearly portrays that it is the gentiles who are “grafted into” the Judaic continuum.
You might mention that Paul was a very well educated Jew and, prior to his epiphany on the road to Damascus, was active in the persecution of followers of Jesus.
There were many Gospels including those written by the main disciples, such Thomas, Johannes, Judas, Barnabas. These appear to be lost, destroyed or disappeared. After Council of Nicea, they were practically eradicated.

I really enjoy your lectures I've listened to. I'm Christian and am so grateful for the Jewish perspective. I've got a question and I thinks it's a very important one for Christians. I'mnvery seriously considering the possibility that Jesus never intended to be worshipped as God. But that wouldn't necessarily mean he wasn't the messiah...I don't know. Could you explain this possibility to me? Bc God made it perfectly clear that there was no God created before or after him. Now, in revelation Jesus says he was there at the beginning and will be at the end BUT why would God give the Jews a messiah that they wouldn't recognize? More importantly, why would he have sent a messaiah that goes against a Jews inherent aversion to worshipping ANYONE in flesh?

i think this lecture is unbiased and objective overview of the topic. As a person of priest (Levite) killed lamb for atonement for a person's sins, Israel as a KINGDOM of Priest (ממלכת כהנים) killed the lamb of God (Jesus) for atonement for the sins of the world. Thank you Israel and my Jewish people for your job to be used by God's mystery. This is one of the core messages of the Christian Bible.

The idea that JC was a Hillel's pupil sounds a bit candid. The gospels mention Him discussing with the doctors of the Synagogue at age 12 already and not only that, the teachers were admired of His answers!

Might it be very useful to also ask about the origin of anti-Christianity as evidence in the "Blessing of the Heretic", which exposed Christians to Roman pogroms and prior to the "Blessing", the stoning of Stephen and martyrdom of the Apostle James by Jewish leaders and prior to that, to the public acclamation of Caesar as King of the Jews (John 19:15 - a false prophecy or at least extremely poor shepherding) implying the rejection of Jesus and his followers as well?
In this regard, are there formal records from the First Century of Christians killing Jews and inciting Romans against them or did they leave this to the will of God as presented in the Book of Revelation and the Destruction of Jerusalem?

I also do not agree that Paul taught replacement theology that was assumption, if you are reading paul letters He warn the Gentiles not to be proud, He wanted to appeal that God is also for Gentile as well, but not at expense of jews. I think that Paul understood best the counsel of God that God wants to reach the jews and gentiles.
When "Jesus" was "crucified"' is one of those things that is in contradiction in the NT. Mark says he was crucified on the passover and John says he was crucified on the day before passover. I don't remember the exact verses, but in one of Bart Ehrman's lectures, he points out this contradiction and I verified it at the time.
Orthodox actually means right worship, or prayer. As in Orthodox Christianity which actually separates from other Christians by observing right worship.

Some Christians believe the church replaced Israel, and some believe that Christians are “grafted in” to Israel. However, most, if not ALL Christians, believe that the Torah has been abolished, that it was a burden, a curse, that Jesus nailed it to the cross, and that Jesus was the only one who ever practiced it perfectly. However, this is NOT what Jesus taught. Paul’s teachings are significantly different that those of Jesus. Paul wrote half the New Testament and his “voice” is louder than Jesus. Christians follow the teachings of Paul, not Jesus.

For what it is worth,
On behalf of my faith, (Christianity / Nazarene) I would like to full heartedly apologize to you for the centuries of persecution that Jews have suffered at the hands of the world, and regrettably Christians. My words by no means can erase or heal the wounds that have been caused. But, I feel obligated to appeal to each and every one of you.
It was four years ago that I converted to Christianity, accepting the teachings of the New Testament as truth, and the testimony of its writers to be accurate, eyewitness accounts , of a chosen few, documenting the details of a miraculous story, that has been nothing short of controversial for some 2000 years.
Never being satisfied, with accepting anything on face value, I have been on a four year journey examining the roots of my beliefs, the further into the dirt I dug, the more I begin to dislike what I saw.
Standing here today, what I was examining was the intentional severing by our so called “fathers” of Christianity from “The Ways” Jewish Roots. I am here to appeal to you that the actions that occurred within the Council of Nicaea were NOT ordained by YHVH and the “fathers” of Christianity had no right whatsoever to make those changes. I acknowledge, that it was this antiemetic ideology by so many of the fathers of the Western movement that contributed to the numerous expulsions of you all and even paved the framework for the Holocaust. I feel sorrow knowing the faith I hold so dear to me could have anything to do with such hate.
But what I hope to highlight to you is that
1. These individuals were not acting, or speaking in the halacha of “The Way”. Yeshua did NOT teach this and our true “fathers” were Torah Observing Jews. Please do not hold us all accountable for their actions.
2. The Old Testament (Old Covenant) was not and is not done away with , it is an everlasting covenant made by YHVH , that is irrevocable, and specific to a certain group of people.
3. Yeshua came for one purpose and that was to bring the lost sheep of Israel back into the renewed covenant of Jeremiah (Brit Hadasha)
4. You our brother Judah who kept the Torah, and preserved the way to keep the Commands of God were and are supposed to be the Light for us who do not know the ways of the Lord.
5. In keeping with Torah, and the promise made to Abraham and later given to Moses before all of Israel , the stranger in the land can also become partakers of the promise.
6. What you call Christian exaggerations and forced implications on the Hebrew / Aramaic texts, were clearly defined, expected and debated prophecies that have not all been fulfilled. Jesus was born, betrayed, killed , and will return just as it was / is written
The difference between Yeshua and the Jewish elect of the 1st century was His rejection of Oral tradition (Which the Sadducees did as well), and His claim to be the Memra made Flesh, that which they likened to blasphemy.
There is most certainly textual criticism, that can be thrown toward the Christian Bible,, but what cannot be questioned, is the historicity, and accuracy of the original texts. Jesus did exist, He did make the claims His apostles recorded verbatim and rather you accept or reject the provision He has made for you, He is still the innocent Lamb of God that came to take the sins of the world.

I have wondered from the contents of the gospel of John if Jesus was of Essene connection because of his anti temple sacrifice actions and his criticism of Yahweh in the eighth chapter. He seemed more connected with Platonic ideas of Divine Consciousness as his beloved Father than with the Old Testament deity Yahweh who He severely criticized.

On Judaism, as I understand Judah became the surviving tribal area/group. after the dispersion of Israel, though they were taken to Babylon, but later under Cyrus who defeated the Babylonians, the Judean's were allowed to return and restore the land. I don't know if you have had time to look at Revelation, as I'm aware you have been investigating the New Testament, I was actually looking for a study in your channel of the Masoretes, but this one caught my interest. And it was worth the watch, thank you. Revelation 7 is of particular interest as it involves the choosing of 12,000 from each of the named 12 tribes of Israel, albeit 2 tribes are not named(Dan and Ephraim). though Manassah, and Joseph are, but 12,000 become the 144,000 when the numbers are added, they appear again in Revelation 14. May be of interest to you, just saying.
I've noticed numbers seem to have repeating patterns in the Bible, though G-d doesn't appear to approve of counting his adopted sons, or was that only during David's rulership, I suppose it's not the amount of soldiers needed to win a battle, but only the fact that G-d is with them, as Abraham is amongst those who proved this to be the case; even in relatively recent times.

According to the writer of Hebrews (7:13-17) Jesus is considered a priest in the order of Melchizedek because, like Melchizedek, Jesus was not a descendant of Aaron, and thus would not qualify for the Jewish priesthood under the Law of Moses.

Also interesting of course is that the church considers itself as the people of Abraham, Isak, Jacob and so forth, thus a continuation and fulfillment of the covenant made with Hashem at Mt. Sinai. All the Old Testament patriarchs and prophets are considered saints by the church and many are great feastdays.
