- Take a trip with Bland Simpson up the Great Dismal Swamp Canal in this segment from the "Our State" television program. Produced by UNC-TV and Our State Magazine, with generous funding from BB&T. Segment originally aired on 2/1/2006.
The Robert Frost story in the middle is truly amazing. I wouldn’t be surprised if less than 1% of the members of my generations of Americans have ever heard that story. That, and all the images of the sky reflecting off the water in the video are downright hypnotic.

This is only 20 miles from the home where I was raised and it means a lot to me to be able to get on here and watch it. Being a professional videographer it makes me really proud to watch this!
Granby Street runs straight through Norfolk, VA. It was named after an 18th C. British aristocrat who never set foot in America. But now I’ll always think of Moses Grandy. Honor is forever.

Funny how they leave out the fact that slaves dug out the canals.
Not unintended, for obvious reasons. Ditch of Death. Vital for obscene wealth accumulation by whites, and so easily erased from white memories.

Sure does....and to think they still use. I'm from the region and it is home to some of the earliest saves to arrive in America.

Everytime I make my "Green Juice" aka Kale, Celery, 2 Green Apples, 1 Lemon, 1 cucumber and a thumb size portion of Ginger root I watch this. I will start to keep talley. Although I have done this about 30 Times already this will be GREEN JUICE #001. Love this movie also!

Are there gators there?
I never saw any whenever I would canoe through the swamps, but there were beaver lodges. It always felt as if I were floating through Jurassic Park

Well, the historic northern limit of the North American gator is just a few miles south of the Virginia/North Carolina line, and, if the globe really is warming, which I neither accept nor reject, then a reasonable person would expect to see gators eventually appear in the Dismal Swamp.
Fersomling That's EXACTLY what I was thinking to myself when I was canoeing through the swamp. Hoping that the Northern limit was still a couple States below Virginia. I expected at any moment for a dinosaur to pop out from behind a cypress tree. It was real creepy at times, especially if there was a mist above the water.

Well, there's the Alligator River in northern North Carolina. Guess there's a reason why they called it that.
The Commonwealth of Virginia officially says that there are no gators in that state.
Folks in Tidewater say otherwise.
