Chloe zhao actually pitched this movie with this story to Kevin Feige. The Reason they have different powers is because they are made to do and fight different things. the deviants evolve to counter their predators if all of them have the same powers the deviants just evolve to counter them and then the eternals useless. With different powers they counter any evolution that the deviants have. i thought Icarus wasn't connecting with other eternals but the twist explains it that he was purposefully being distant and stilted because of the guilt of knowing the secret
Kingo's motivation actually made the most sense to me. He says that he's not going to betray the Celestials and their mission (like Ikaris), but he also says that he's unwilling to fight and kill his family (unlike Ikaris). Since he doesn't think the other Eternals will be able to stop the emergence anyway, he sits out the final fight.
I kinda wish they used this on another Eternal it’s just my fanboy for Kumail talking tho. I actually appreciate his stance more now with your comment. Thanks!
You're right that his motivation made a lot of sense, but just eliminating him entirely from the climax of the movie because of it weakened the film. As was mentioned in the podcast, he could have at least gone after Kro to still be relevant in some way. But instead he was meaningless.
Kingo not dancing well in bollywood dance scene was intentional, they were kind of making fun of some Bollywood stars who just stand in a frame and everyone dances around them. Also the bit where he's been in bollywood from a film family for decades is a comment on the nepotism present in Bollywood where the film families hold a lot of power and its hard for outsiders to make it big in the industry which is changing now
@@Gusto3791 yes Ethan, the Indian guy talking about bollywood and it's tropes is definitely projecting his own feelings because this is such a good movie, yes. Agreed.
Really enjoyed your discussion. Also, I don't think you guys need to shorten your content. The length is not problematic and trying to artificially condense it might lessen the quality of your analysis.
I need to correct you guys here 24:36 The scene you guys spoke about was the one set at the start of the "Fall of Tenochtitlan" (which took place in modern day Mexico City) back in 1521 where the conquistadores fought the Aztecs/mexicas and *not* the Mayans -- who actually live in the Yucatan peninsula and not central Mexico --. Just needed to mention that small nuance, besides that it was great commentary. Saludos!
I like the length of your movie reviews, so I hope they keep to an hour+ when able. It's frustrating when some of you aren't able to watch the entire movie.
The sheer brilliance and scope of this massive MCU experience known as Eternals in my opinion can never be matched up to the scope of mastery that is this podcast episode runtime being a numerical upward sequence.
Yep - beautifully shot and some great nuance in here about what our purpose is and how family can break and reform; reminded me of a slightly diff take on Captain America: Civil War’s themes
Mixed fealings about this movie... I kind of liked the idea behind it, but the paseing is all over the place. I dont think the number of of charaters is a mayor problem, as I more or less see each eternal as a part of a sigle character called "the eternals". I do however have issue with the number of "villlans"/plots in here. Where you said you wanted the longer Chloé Zhao cut of this movie I would much rateher have cut this movie up in two. A origen story set in the past where we can spend some more time developing each hero, and have a much more epic battle with the deviants. This also makes time for Sersi/Ikarri's love story to be fleshed out to more then 4 lines culminting in "I love you"... No I love YOU!". Cut to the present, where we get the new and improved deviants who can suck powers and a badass Kro who is used for more then "here-look-at-the-monster-we-are-fighting-until-the real-story-unfolds". All the way thorugh there are plenty of oppertunity to make small hints of the underlying story of Celestials and there true reasons for sending the eternals to protect the human raceand that maybe some of the eternals know more the the rest. In the second movie we delve deep into that plotline, and end up with the same fight in the end but with the twist (in my What-If version ) that yes they try to do the unimind, and fail, but Tiamat in it's waking state lends it's power to Sersi/the unimind and therefore gives them the power to stop the emergance. I found it super wierd that anyone would hae the power to basicaly kill a Celestial like they did here... All the Celetials have have powers on the level of Thor/MS Marvel/DR Strang but not godlike powers of cration/destruction that is the Celestials. By letting Tiamat sacrefice it self for us, the etrnals argument of the humans importance to the universe would ring som much more true IMHO.
The super man reference I think was Superman as in the same scene I remember them saying something like "what is your name Batman" - not sure exactly the line but I remember a Batman reference too.
How could u miss major nitpick they name drop avengers so many times in the movie and even say they brought back everyone with a snap but when entire celestial emerged not a single avenger saw it coming or care to stop by in that whole sequence and even after when arashim appear to take back the eternals.
Possibly check out speed racer (2008) by the Wachowskis in the lead up to matrix 4 as well. It has some super cool effects going on and enough plot to tie everything together
I'm normally an Apple Podcast listener, but came here just to comment and defend Kingo. The reason he "peaces out" at the end, was because he says that he believes in Arishem's cause, but refuses to kill his family over it. He didn't leave just cause he didn't want to take a stance on the issue. And yes he was mostly comedic relief and a bit douchey throughout the movie, but he was also the first one to hop on board the quest when he found out his family needed help. Also y'all had issue with Kingo coming back and not getting flack, yet I don't recall mentioning having issues with Sprite just getting a pass at the end, when she literally sided with Icarus to kill everyone and would've succeeded in killing Sersi if Druig hadn't stepped in.
I like the length of the podcast, if anything I wish they went longer to give you all breathing room to voice your opinions without needing be wary of the runtime. Cuts can always be made in the edit, but unvoiced thoughts won't ever exist.
Inhumans like the Agents of Shield show was meant as an ongoing series (under the Marvel Television banner run by Jeph Loeb separate from Kevin Feige/MCU) and was then cancelled after a few episodes. Something like WandaVision is more of a limited/mini series and it's what Eternals should have been i.e. a 4 to 6 episode D+ show that gave enough breathing room for the characters, villains & world-building that eventually led into a future movie.
Yeah, they could have even done it as one episode for each Eternal plus a few to bring everything together. It would have given us a good opportunity to sit with each character (or even characters if you wanted to cover Thena and Gilgamesh as a pair in one episode) and reflect on their motivations and experiences.
I also give it a 5/10 (2.5/5 on letterboxd). Aside from all the problems, even the music and cinematography that was supposed to be breathtaking didn't do much for me. Maybe because I am involuntary comparing it to Dune in imax, but yeah 5/10 not great, not terrible
I believe that Black Knight will be Blades partner in his movie and won't have his own movie, that's why Mahershala Ali speaks his line in the post credit scene. Emergency Awesome had some amazing analysis of the whole lore and theories around the movies and series, it's really worth to watch and makes sense of many of the points talked about here.
Celestials can be big or small in the MCU. In Guardians Vol.1 We see a Celestial use the power stone on a planet and it wasn't as huge. Also Knowhere where The Collector lives is the head of a dead Celestial.
The point around 30 mins about indie/smaller directors mistakenly being given huge budgets in the MCU is just wrong. Taika was an indie director, then made Ragnarok, which critics, fans and the podcast loved. SImilar situation happened to the Russo Brothers, who before MCU movies were mostly smaller budget project directors, then they made some of the best movies of the MCU, including Infinity War.
I would’ve preferred if they went down the Seven Deadly Sins route, where we hear about and have “visions” of the other characters but we don’t know anything about them until they actually show up, maybe not even have all of them in the first movie. That would’ve made this even more interesting
It's not just Marvel, every sci-fi franchise does "Aliens just speak english". Stargate SG-1 started out having them speak different languages, but from a production standpoint they found it added a lot of unneccesary friction in terms of story telling, if they had to learn to communicate every episode, so partway through the first season they just stopped pretending :P

SPOILERS: If Kingo was not in the movie, then there would of been no comic relief in the movie. The jumping back and forth in the first 90mins is what made it harder to follow slightly for me. Biggest issues I had were characters deaths when we barely got to know them, trying a Thanos scale threat in an origin movie shortly afterwards and also felt the most separated from all other MCU movies with no way you could see them linking to the Avengers etc. in the near future (slightly how I felt with Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014, but that movie was much better executed).
I don't know why there's too much negative reviews about Eternals. i liked it a lot. it was different from the usual Marvel films. I guess Marvel fans are used to the same plots and stories about super heroes

Ok, the fact that they don''t know immediately that Dane Whitman = Black Knight and his connection to the Marvel universe shows that they need to do more research... p/s there are also vampires (Blade), flaming skeletons (Ghost Riders), swamp monsters (Man Thing)... What the credit scene show teases is probably a Midnight Sons reveal, which is an ensemble crew which comprises of Blade, Ghost Rider, Man Thing, Werewolf by Night, Moonknight, Morbius (not Moebius), and sometimes the Punisher.... Having both the Moon Knight TV Series and the Blade movies already announced, strongly hints what they will do with the Black Knight... p/s the Black Knight is not an unknown character... It may be unknown to the people who only watch the movies, or stick to the top selling comics, but the Black Knight comics has been a thing since the 60s... fun fact, Dane Whitman's uncle Nathan Garrett was a villian, and also holds the moniker the Black Knight and also wields the Ebony Blade... he is also an Avenger

Guys you need to chill, this was way better than Dune. I had great expectations from 2 movies this year. Dune and Eternals. Dune was a disappointment (not necessarily a bad movie), on the other hand Eternals totally delivered. You are just trolling regarding the Eternals, or maybe the film critics have some compromising stuff about you and you had to say the movie was not great. You also mentioned that you are exhausted by superhero movies. This kind of invalidates your whole video. Maybe don't review "superhero" movies if you go into cinema set to don't like them or just stop watching them altogether. Just an idea.
Hey, I had no idea who the actor in the mid-credits scene was. People in the theater where I saw the movie reacted to him, but I didn't know who he was. It wasn't until later when I watched some of the breakdowns of the movie that they mentioned who he is, and I recognized the name. Frankly, I'm not familiar with his work.
MCU is slowly turning into CW Arrowers with singers , "celbrities" nobody knows getting roles and quality just goes down the drain but politics and wokness shines
And that is bad, because why, exactly? See, I think the MCU is slowly turning into a by the numbers machine, only able to tell one kind of narrative where everything is solved by a big final battle. That's boring. PS, I wouldn't mind more woks in the MCU. A good stir fry may be able to bring about world peace
I got to see a press screening of this early, and I was so disappointed. But I will say the second watch (in 4dx) was more entertaining because I got whiplash. 5.3/10. My back still hurts.
To confirm the unseen voice in the final end credit scene, is Mahershala Ali, who is playing Blade in the upcoming movie.

Am I the only one who saw John Snow say I love you Cersei before the eternals got yanked by Arishem ?

MCU is slowly turning into CW Arrowers with singers , "celbrities" nobody knows getting roles and quality just goes down the drain but politics and wokness shines
What a baseless claim
And that is bad, because why, exactly? See, I think the MCU is slowly turning into a by the numbers machine, only able to tell one kind of narrative where everything is solved by a big final battle. That's boring.
PS, I wouldn't mind more woks in the MCU. A good stir fry may be able to bring about world peace
Like for the rewrite haha
I got to see a press screening of this early, and I was so disappointed. But I will say the second watch (in 4dx) was more entertaining because I got whiplash. 5.3/10. My back still hurts.
