Animalese is just every letter pronounced, like if you said “game” it would say guh ay mmm ee! I noticed this from the chat feature whenever you type something it makes the sound
It works a lot better in Japanese, being that each character in the Japanese language has a single pronunciation, so in the Japanese version, they're just speaking Japanese very fast.
We have literally known for ages how it works. All it is is saying each individual letter very quickly. You can hear how each letter is said in animalise by using an in game keyboard and it says each letter out loud
That said, I HAVE always wanted to slow it down to see if it actually is EVERY letter, or just a select few, like the first and last 2 for each word; cuz sometimes they can blow through a whole sentence faster than it can appear and it sounds abridged af.
In AC:City Folk (Wii), it was just spelling out the words very quickly, so “yes” sounds like “w- ee- es” In AC:New Horizons, it’s (seemingly) assigning an “average sound” for every letter and stringing them together, so “yes” sounds like “yuh- eh- ss”
Fun fact: when Robot Chicken did an Animal Crossing parody, they used the same tactic as Nintendo (spelling out the words rapidly) to create proper Animalese.
Okay, here’s the real answer: Essentially, each letter has its own sound snippet assigned to it that’s typically very sped up and some what muffled. This means that a word like Mountain wouldn’t be said as Mountain, but as Mow-an-tin.
Animalese is whatever language you have set with Japanese phonetic translation. So, if you slowed down the PAL version of an Animal Crossing game, it will sound like the language but with strange pronunciation. Each version of Animalese is different because the phonetic pronunciation of every letter is structured differently depending on the language chosen. Listen to Japanese Animalese, and it'll sound completely different
THIS IS SO WELL TIMED. I just restarted my ACNH island (again...) and could SWEAR that I understood the Animalese while I was listening to it. i'm NOT INSANE ty for the validation, boss
Okay here me out: if you type on the ac keyboards it makes a sound similar to the letter. What if you "speed up" the typing fast enough so it sounds like whole words and mabye then animalese as well... 🤔
This is why I love hearing Hamlet say "Hammie" because he pronounces it as "hammy-e". There's that extra e sound that is just so cute. I think it might be my favorite catchphrase. XD
Originally, Taro Bando wanted them to actually speak. This is easy in Japanese, but English is weird because the letters don’t always sound the same. So they use the Japanese sounds on English words, and speed it up
fun fact animalese sounds different in japan. I think over there its just sped up japanese, it sounds so different here to us because (May be wrong check me on this if I am) it uses the japanese voice synthesizer across the other languages including english thats why the yes sounded different from the way a native english speaker would say it
Correct. Although I can’t tell if you fully understand or not, so I’ll give the full explanation. Each character has a sound associated with it. In Japan, it just sounds like sped-up speaking because in the language, each character has the same pronunciation all the time, so it will always sound correct. For English, because the letters’ sounds change depending on the word, it sounds a lot more like gibberish and strange noises, because regardless of how it _should_ sound when being spoken, there’s only one sound to play for each letter.
I always assumed it was being spelled out when they talked. Mostly because when you type in animal crossing it’s like umm saying each letter when you press them.
I think Tom's voice was just harder to decipher There's a couple videos out there where people have slowed down animalese and it actually sounds like words
Your vermont castings woodstove does not meet the minimum clearance off of the back to the wall. You do not have a hearth pad under the stove either, and if you have have the pipe going though the peak you will have a leak, strutural issues with the frame, and you will not have minimum clearance to combustables. We are going to need to offset that pipe, make a new hole in the roof, get a new flashing matching the pitch, and we might just have to replace your entire pipe system because they dont make that brand anymore. You are going to need to call a roofer and possibly a framer to come and fix the damage in your roof and attic space, we can cover the hole with some sheet metal, but it will not be water tight. I will run you up a bid for what you will need on our end, but that wont cover what the roofer will charge ( it will be an extensive repair).
I always thought that they pre-recorded the letters for the characters (and mastered them to sound higher, lower, or speedier), then just synced it FAST to the text.
When you type in animal crossing, you hear a voice saying each letter in Animalese. It’s like a squeaky Japanese pronunciation of the English letters. Animalese is basically each of the letters pronounced individually combined into one *very* fast. Edit: This also means they say my animal crossing nickname (Tommi) almost perfectly, since it’s said almost the same as it’s spelled (They say it like “Tah-mee”)
I noticed this because once I tried to emulate wii animal crossing, but it was running so slow on my old pc I could hear the letters pronounced clearly😭
I am not certain, but apparently, it says the individual sound of each letter with a gap, which makes it sound odd for example, it would be like this: English: Hello! Animalese: H, E, E, L, O It might sound like something like that, but you might get what I mean if you investigate more! :) Good luck!
I've known it was Animalese because I played Animal Crossing Wild World on the DS, which had the option to choose what it sounded like when the animals spoke, and one of the options was Animalese.
I remember playing happy home designer on 3Ds, and when you would type it would say the name of the letter in animalese, so it’s not making the sound of the letter, it’s saying the name.
I've been looking for one of these 'insert character voice to make AI voices' tools, I am so happy I found this. Now everyone's favorite yellow Egyptian cat will utter phrases from everyone's favorite yellow bisexual vampire who lived in Egypt.
It’s just pronouncing the letters as they’re typed. This would probably yield something pretty close to actual squeaky speech in Japanese because their kana have fixed pronunciations while English is all over the place.
When you’re typing something in the game, it sounds out the letter in animalese and sometimes when Isabelle finishes the news, I can hear the end word sounds the same as English lol
I think the reason that animalese sounds like sped up English is just due to pareidolia. We follow along their text as we hear them speaking, so naturally our brains will make the audio sound familiar when we have text to give it context
I noticed back in Wild World that their Animalese sounded like English a little, but what I thought was happening, was that each letter makes its own sound. Nook's "Hm?" and "yes, yes?" always sounded like he was saying it, due to this.
That's kind of been a thing in the GameCube version as well. It's also a bit imperfect, since the GameCube game pronounced "house" as "hoose", due to English already being weird. It did pronounce "Thank you for stopping by!" almost perfectly when visiting the police station.
It always sounds like you can understand Gulliver when you hear him talk. It’s like the closest I’ve heard to him speaking English. But slowed down Tom Nook sounds like a grumpy villager 😂
I have nothing to base this on by my own bad memory and nostalgia, but I swear the Gamecube Animal Crossing had Animalese that sounded way closer to regular sped up English than any later game in the series. Like maybe they changed the way it worked after that game.
Animalese has every letter in a word pronounced! There are no silent letters and every letter is pronounced the exact same everytime. So words with like compound letters like ch and th will be pronounced
I always noticed it sounds like english Like in nooks cranny whenever i sold things i heard "oh ok what are you offering" I heard in most in the last word
It's more noticeable in the GCN games, I think. I could make out full words on occasion, and my current playthrough of E+, even if I can understand it, you can hear Japanese, it's pretty cool.
See animalese is kind of similar to splatoon's language (which makes sense as both series were made and developed by the same group) and with splatoon's it mixes both Japanese and English so sometimes you hear words from both languages. Animalese is interesting as the words are more spelled out and then speed up or deepened depending on character/personality type. You gotta give the team props for making a language. It's not easy to convey
The way animalese works is by dividing words into vowels and then they are pronounced with the Japanese accent. That’s how they made it so they didn’t have to dub all characters for all words on all languages
I play it in Spanish and can understood several words in my language. Makes sense now that I read other comments about how it works. I think it suits Spanish well.
Ive noticed this a lot of years ago when i played new leaf, and i can hear everything they say quite well, i dont know if i am weird or i just have good hearing. I am german and i think in the german dub they really pronounce the words but just fast
If you do this with Gamecube animalese, you can actually understand it. It's still a bit garbled, but much more clear. Just slowing a RUclips video to half speed is enough to hear it.
Animalese could be useful if they are going to make real life adaptation of Animal Crossing. This game could really use a real life adaptation, or a movie.
