Mark spent his last days in a beautiful place, with a loving wife having a child, enjoying life. And Roman will grow up seeing his channel, knowing his great father; a great gift. We will all miss him, toast to his life and help his family.
I have known Mark for about four years and recently did what was to be a first interview with him at his home. When Jen became pregnant and Mark was taking a bit of static about his age as an expectant father, I told him that it was the right thing for no other reason than that Jen, especially as a Filipina, wanted a child. I am praying for Jen and Rogan in this tragic time. Mark first asked me for an interview three years ago and I am so glad that we got an interview done just three months after I arrived in Dumaguete.
i watched from the beginning too his blogs were awesome (especially in the beginning, from which now many videos are not there anymore) , he is the best philipine blogger besides his old friend old dog, i hope old dog reunites
I am sorry Mark passed away. When he met Jen and it was serious we exchanged emails where I employed him to go to Cebu and have two cardiac tests which can be done quickly. First was an echocardiogram that shows full function of the heat and at the same time they can do a check of both carotid arteries and the aorta. I also told him to have the chemical stress test to make sure he had no issues when exerting himself. His response was that his doctor in Dumaguete said he was fine. I knew better than that as I personally have those tests annually. When Jen got pregnant we again exchanged emails. Again I told him the same thing and to do it for the sake of Jen and now Baby Rogan. Again he said his doctor said he was fine. I told him that nobody with a quadruple bypass is never fine and afterwards you are seen annually for those simple tests. Mark was very stubborn with me. He knew damn well if he was in the USA he would have been having those tests. He could have had those tests for around $200 in Cebu. If he had a stroke it was due to issues with his carotid arteries. If he had that test it would be addressed medically quite easily. Sadly Mark did not have to die. This should be a lesson to all foreigners in the Philippines. First if you have medical issues you need to have access to advanced medical care in Manila, Cebu or Davao. All three best hospitals have diagnostic tools and can undertake most of the major surgeries. I would implore every foreigner to have a complete medical physical at St. Luke's as an example. You can stay for a two day evaluation in a hospital suite and it costs $800. I looked at all of these hospitals because of my medical issues. Thailand is better for me. I can visit all other countries if that is my home base. That includes time in the Philippines. So many foreigners in the Philippines are stubborn when it comes to medical care. I did exchange messages with Mark where he set up Social security for Rogan where he would receive 75% of his Social Security benefits. Jen as Rogan'' guardian will receive that monthly check. He also told me that she had access to all of his banking information as well as leaving his channel in her name if he passed away. She can now do videos about her and Rogan on Mark's channel and get a monthly RUclips check in addition to her channel's check. I feel really bad for Jen because Mark's medical issues could have been addressed with proper tests. I guess someone should tell his doctor he is no longer fine. I also questioned him about going off his blood pressure medicine because s person with a quadruple bypass is going to build up additional blockages. Mark had not had his heart's medical tests since arriving in the Philippines. Filipinos call people like Mark Matigas Ulo. The only good news is Jen will be financially ok. She will need someone to help her at the US Embassy in Manila to get the Social Security addressed. I hope one of her friends foreign husbands will help her.

Thanks for mentioning for viewers to keep watching Mark's and Jen's videos so maybe they can maintain some of the YT income stream. Mark will truly be missed. I love his laid back style of interviewing. It's like just listening to a couple of guys having a conversation over a cup of coffee. His live streams were always informative. Some of his interviews truly touched my heart. One that comes to mind from a few years ago was the Alaskan pilot who was a recovering alcoholic. It was a very moving story, and I wish I had thanked Mark for how that video changed the direction of my life. It's so sad knowing that he is gone. I'm holding Jen and Rogan in my prayers.

Seeing this news about Mark's passing was like a gut punch. I looked forward to going to bed with Mark. Lol. Seriously, i found Mark's voice to be soothing. He had a unique voice. The pace and intonation of his speech lulled me like a Sunday afternoon swing. I binged watched his shows to ease me to sleep. I love the story he told about why he went to the Philippines and his early days there - eating beef jerky he brought from home. I don't know how many men would open up about their life's misteps and misfortunes. But he did. He shared his vulnerabilities, and he was fearless about his political conviction despite knowing that he could lose viewership and friends over it. And sadly; he did. Mark was a dichotomy. I could tell he was honest, intelligent, kind, and welcoming. And i could also tell he had a short, perhaps volatile fuse. I also loved that he just refused to interview women. I know he said it was because that was Jen's category and because the name is his channel was, "Every Man...." Perhaps, I'm an old romantic, but i got the feeling that was his way of giving himself fully to Jen, and he wanted her to feel secure about their relationship. Thank goodness to his RUclips channel, Rogan can see and hear his dad. Thank you, Mark, for introducing us to all your male friends. You completed your life on earth. I trust you are in God's paradise now.
Thanks for your excellent description of your response to the sudden departure of a special member of the Greater Dumaguete community. I'll have to wait until Mark and I have that follow-up interview in the Great Beyond! RIP Mark!
Are you the teacher who lived at the upper end of Alaska with your wife and kids? I thought your interview was very interesting. I was hoping you guys would go on a bit longer. If this is you, you should know i found your story informative. I would have never guessed Filipinos and Thai's would even consider living there, but i guess people do what they have to do to thrive. Just like Mark did. Mark talked about having found happiness in the Philippines with his love Jen and baby Rogan. From the looks of his surroundings, it appears he did. I'm glad he was able to secure Rogan's birth certificate. I hope that's enough documentation for Jen to receive Rogan's child survivor benefits as his guardian. I hope she gets an honest financial advisor to help her invest that money so she and Rogan can have a secure future. God willing, Social Security is solvent for 100 more years and not just the next 10. May the good Lord comfort Mark's Mom and siblings in the US, his daughters in England, Jen, and Rogan in their time of need. Rest in Paradise, Mark.

In order for Jen to collect Mark's social security, I believe she would have to live in the US for at least 5 years. She's never been to the US with Mark. They don't own any land in the Philippines either. You should at least buy her some property, and if you live long enough to build a house on it at least she'll have a place to live. If not, at least she has property to fall back on. However, I believe he applied for his baby to collect a portion of his Social Security after the baby was born. RIP Mark Thorton.
she has to be 60 years of age to collect his SSA regardless of where she lives in the USA or the Philippines as long as they have been married for 9 months so has to wait at age 60 not 62
@dmg8304 What about having to reside in the US for at least 5 years, 'the Social Security 5 year residency rule?' She would still have to reside in the US for at least 5 years and then be able to collect at age 60 or 62
@JamesKay007 She does not need to reside in the USA people are confused as long as they been married for 9 months but she has to wait till age 60...who knows what Congress will do with spousal benefits
@@JamesKay007 Also the FBU @ the embassy will tell her the same thing but the kid will get benefits till the 18th bday or 19th depending if still in school at 19
RIP Mark, I regret that the follow up interview with me must be “in the great beyond”. Will treasure the interview with you in 2023. Our hearts go out to both Jen’s family and the Thornton’s in the USA . Your Rogan will be proud of the legacy you left with the gift of his life’s journey. Your social security benefit will go a long way in the Philippines as well as his US citizenship!
I have a pension that I just started drawing five months ago it is not transferable to children. It would only be transferable if I married, and it would be a lot less money if she’s younger. They’ve got it figured out to where they don’t have to pay out to a beneficiary. There is a $25,000 death benefit that’s it. I can draw my pension until the day I die. I’ve never been married and I have no kids. There’s no one to leave anything too anyway. If I was married, I could take less money per month to ensure a small percentage would go to my wife after I pass. Really sad to see Mark go I enjoyed his videos.
@@MikeHoncho884 In addition to my SS I have a pension that if I die in the first 10 years the remaining amount goes to my beneficiary. There are 7 years left on that provision. Otherwise I draw it until I die. Oddly they provided 3 options and this one was by far the best.
When a guy gets 60 and older statistics tell us life can be short or a little longer, but the end of life will come. Mark looked pretty healthy. My father inlaw was 85 and looked perfect and heallthy, the next week he was gone. Time catches up to everyone. Enjoy everyday.
It's so sad and unfair. Everyone on the planet has children with no guarantees of continuing life or continuing relationship. Jen is young enough to make a new start when the time comes...God bless them....RIP Mark and thank you.
Yes bro...start watching mark in 20....got stuck in usa c19..but kept my interest to come to the pi...I'm here in Cebu Metro now because of mark saying he rebuilt his life and I have done the same as well. Geez 😢
Mark game me so much game as I prepared to move to Manila. Not flashy. Just honest wisdom. One of the few vloggers I respected. If there's an upside to his passing, it's a cautionary tale. As expats we must be vigilant with our health, finances, and estate planning. I can't confirm, but word is the wife lacks resources. BTW, you might consider removing "dead" from the title out of respect. "Deceased" is less crued. IMHO
I enjoyed his channel also. I was always a downer saying he should not have had a child at his age with heart problems. Not a good idea when you have heart problems like Mark did.
Mark made a video on his wife and his shelf deciding to have a baby. He said he had everything set up for the child so she would not have a struggle, but it was mostly her decision to have a child.
I've heard of Mark before, but never really watched any of his videos. As a fellow vlogger, I pass along my heartfelt condolences to his family. 😢 Unfortunately, this happens more often than not, where a senior expat comes to live here, starts a new family with a young wife and children, only to pass away leaving that family behind with little to nothing. Raising a young family at that age is a huge decision, and an even bigger responsibility to secure that family's financial stability for the future. Tragic.
Survivor SSA benefits for Rogan until age 18 at 75% of Mark's benefits will give a positive start; Mark's family in the USA surely will help. Rogan can be a dual USA-Filipino citizen is a great benefit too. Mark has left a great legacy for Rogan. RIP Mark, you are mightily missed! Condolences to the Thorntons
RIP Mark. You provided insightful and useful advice. Thank you. And by the way, children of American expats are entitled to some generous SS benefits. No need to bring up the tired issue of "Should older expats even have children". Mind your own business and don't be an expat policeman. Just saying.
Feel badly for the family, i quit watching his channel a few months ago when he started the usa political stuff. Hopefully this wife can handle things well. Maybe he family can help
She could divorce u today, leave u with nothing, never have to work again and be set for life, while u gotta work another 9 yrs and possibly longer. What u gonna live in?
Mark explained his reasoning with having a child as security for Jenn. Baby will be entitled to his social security. Not sure if he was able to get to the Embassy to get baby signed up before he died.
I’m convinced Thornton had Paul Cardwell of world zoom arrested without cause. Cardwell was no saint, but did not deserve to spend four months in a rotten detention facility until he could bribe his way out of the place. Thornton denied making the false allegations but Cardwell knew for sure it was him who made the bogus report. That mess, along with what he did to the guy outside of the coffee shop showed his true colors. I know he’s dead and I know that everyone wants to say nice things about him, but he really wasn’t a very nice person and spent alot of his time being angry. Just saying. I hope he planned ahead for his wife and son.
Exactly! What's strange is that a few months ago he was the most hated blogger in Dumaguete, now suddenly overnight he's been elevated to semi sainthood. Are people fickle or what?
Mark knew how bad his health was he is a big guy on top of that 6'5 how many big Americans you see live along life. Its sad and wrong to bring a child when you know your not gonna be there
Can someone inform his wife she should be entitled to the FULL AMOUNT of his social security starting immediately,,sad at his passing but this money can make a huge difference in his child's future
Jen will be OK, because if they did everything right, their baby should be receiving a social Security benefit if Mark had started drawing his Social Security. The US has a real good program for that. Now she and the child will be eligible for what’s known as surviving child benefit, which will increase the benefit they should be receiving already by maybe a couple of hundred US dollars. For my two children who are twins we receive $1150 USD every month combined. Now that benefit is only paid until the child is 18 or graduates from high school. So as long as they have the child’s US citizenship in order, everything should be OK for Jeneven if it’s a little less budget than what she had combined with Mark and his RUclips revenue. Rest in peace Mark.
Feel very sorry for his wife and baby. Jen did well to escape impoverished circumstances and I do hope Mark left some provision that will mean that Jen and her baby will not return to that.
Just about any doctor will tell their patients not to stop taking their bp medicine. Taking bp medicine doesn't work the way mark was using it. RIP Mark.
Now that explains why he is not with us today. Do you know for sure he stopped his BP medication ? I observed during his last interview that he was asking for a Coke to drink. Not good when you have heart problems , also taking medication. Coke is a stimulant to the heart ! We all will miss you Mark !!!
@tedm4932 he didn't stop completely. In his own words on a yt video mark said he checks his bp and if needed then he takes his bp medication. That is so wrong to do. Any decent doctor will tell you never stop taking your bp medication. There is a reason why high bp is the silent killer. Marks family should have told him to take his medication daily. Mark possibly caused his stroke by not taking his bp medication daily, but we will never know exactly.
BP is known as the silent killer, it's worst than diabetes and even most cancer. High BP you can stroke(hemorrhagic stroke) immediately and die instantly
RIP he shouldn’t have a child anymore bcoz he is old already. I hope he left his wife in good financial standing. Hope the kid doesn’t grow up to be poor
Mark knew that his time here was coming to a close. He planned for his passing with his wife and she wanted the child, although his health situation was not robust. So he prepared, the question now is how well ,and what does that look like for his survivors. Many foreigners have not really thought through their visit. I call it visit because often times they don't think through the consequences of their actions are misguided on their short stay. Leaving a legacy of an Amerasian child burdens the surviving spouse, or girlfriend in a society that will not offer many opportunities in life. Many visitors may also not be aware of the Vietnam War legacy throughout the Philippines because they were too young or they are not thinking deeply enough and maybe selfish in their motivation.
@GUITARTIME2024 Don't argue with me because I'm the only person in USA that was legally declared disabled by a judge without disability and no medical records whatsoever. I know the law although I'm not a lawyer.
@LumieSoucek-r2t "The spouse must have lived in the United States with their U.S. spouse for at least five years during their marriage. This residency does not need to be continuous." From SS website.
I'm not sure . This on Google seems contradictory. non-U.S. spouse can claim Social Security survivor benefits if their U.S. citizen spouse dies, even if they've never lived in the U.S. However, there are some conditions that must be met: The couple must have been married for at least nine months, unless the U.S. citizen spouse died while on active military duty. The non-U.S. spouse must meet the five-year residency requirement. This means they must have lived in the U.S. as the surviving spouse of the U.S. citizen for at least five years. The five-year period doesn't need to be continuous, and the couple doesn't need to have been married for the entire time. The non-U.S. spouse can apply for benefits at age 60, or at age 50 if they are disabled. If they wait until full retirement age, they can receive the full benefit amount. If they apply before full retirement age, they'll receive a partial payment that increases until they reach full retirement age. If the non-U.S. spouse leaves the U.S. for at least 30 days in a row, they must complete Form SSA-
Guys, I made a contribution to you to pass on to Mark's widow, because I don’t know how otherwise. I assume it has a higher monetary value than watching all of Mark's video. Please, tell Jen that her husband was an important man, that he brought a lot of love in this world and that it is her duty to impress Mark’s love and generosity on her son in order that it gets transmitted to the next generation. Thank you!
If you somehow donated to us to give to mark's family that would be a mistake as we do not know them personally... perhaps if you did that you could get a refund and go to his site and give through his site which is called :every man has a story" God bless you.
Sorry to say this, and sorry for the loss. But this is why you don't have a baby at 70 years old, and now leaving the wife and child without any money, it's very Irresponsible and selfish.
I don’t believe that is the case at all. Reports from people that knew him state he squared everything with SSA so that his family would be well cared for upon his passing. I’d say he was a very conscientious individual who cared a lot about his new family. RIP Mark🙏
Others have said he was in the process of trying to get ssi for the child, but he hadn't finished the process yet. Additionally, for spouse to claim survivor benefits, they need have been married at ten years and the surviving spouse needs to be at least 50 years of age if they have a disability, 60 years old minimum with no disability. The very young spouse would not qualify in either case. As for the child getting survivor benefits, it would remain to be seen. Hopefully, she and the child will be ok.
You don’t sound like a Republican, especially inserting your political party declaration as well as the NRA thing. Totally inappropriate and disrespectful…. Most likely a Leftist troll. Just stop it!

RIP Mark!
Powerful words 👏
RIP❤ MARK . From Will in Alaska
If you are referring to us I think you may have us mixed up with someone else but we do interviews and we have a lot of fun chats on our channel I hope you get a chance to check out all our videos thanks for commenting here God bless you.

Wow this is sad day for us! Mark is such a good guy I’m one supporter of his Channel love watching them R.I.P. Mark .
RIP Mark Thorton.
she has to be 60 years of age to collect his SSA regardless of where she lives in the USA or the Philippines as long as they have been married for 9 months so has to wait at age 60 not 62
@@dmg8304 she get zero have be marry and in usa 5 years . if the baby has a ss card and american passport get 100 % tell reach 18
@dmg8304
What about having to reside in the US for at least 5 years, 'the Social Security 5 year residency rule?' She would still have to reside in the US for at least 5 years and then be able to collect at age 60 or 62
@JamesKay007 She does not need to reside in the USA people are confused as long as they been married for 9 months but she has to wait till age 60...who knows what Congress will do with spousal benefits
RIP Mark. & Condolences to his family.
Really sad to see Mark go I enjoyed his videos.
my pinay daughter gets 888 usd a month and cola every year .from my ss . she well taken care of .
@@MikeHoncho884 In addition to my SS I have a pension that if I die in the first 10 years the remaining amount goes to my beneficiary. There are 7 years left on that provision. Otherwise I draw it until I die. Oddly they provided 3 options and this one was by far the best.
RIP Mark 🙏🏻God bless his wife and child. I know he was a very smart man and he must have planned for her future with his child.

It's so sad and unfair.
Everyone on the planet has children with no guarantees of continuing life or continuing relationship.

Yes bro...start watching mark in 20....got stuck in usa c19..but kept my interest to come to the pi...I'm here in Cebu Metro now because of mark saying he rebuilt his life and I have done the same as well.
Geez 😢
GOD be with Mark and the family he left behind.
Given his past hardships and trial & errors in the states. I think Mark, finally found his peace in the Philippines.
Sad news. My condolences and best wishes to his family.
Forever in our hearts❤
RIP Mark….you never know which day is your last…..surrender to Jesus now. 🥰😇
Mark made a video on his wife and his shelf deciding to have a baby. He said he had everything set up for the child so she would not have a struggle, but it was mostly her decision to have a child.
RIP Mark Thornton 😥
Mark was a great guy...one of the good ones...rip
Very sad to hear ...enjoyed his interviews and his growth as a man a husband a father ...Prayers to His Wife, and All his Children
I didn't see much political talk. In fact I liked him more when I learned he was a Democrat. RIP

For me it was her choice. I know its hard but did not plan first, maybe. they did not discuss before having a kid. Also his age.
My 28 yrs younger Filipina been in USA 10 yrs I’m 61 my son is 9 now my wife has a house in Valencia close to dumaguete.
Rest in God's peace ❤❤❤
Sad to hear! R.I.P-
When & where the funeral services be held?
Rest in peace Mark.
. Ark didn't have a ig SS check
One reply I read said that the child citizenship was not in order. So that is not good .

Feel very sorry for his wife and baby. Jen did well to escape impoverished circumstances and I do hope Mark left some provision that will mean that Jen and her baby will not return to that.
Baby is 8 months old and he stopped taking blood pressure medication. He said.
Just about any doctor will tell their patients not to stop taking their bp medicine. Taking bp medicine doesn't work the way mark was using it. RIP Mark.
@BC19572 i agree. My doctor preach that all the time.
I take fish oil for hart health.

Where is Mark's channel?
Oh well, life goes on.

The child is entitled for SSA benefit until at the age of 19. The wife can collect survivor benefits.
Don't think so
@GUITARTIME2024 Don't argue with me because I'm the only person in USA that was legally declared disabled by a judge without disability and no medical records whatsoever.
However, there are some conditions that must be met:
The couple must have been married for at least nine months, unless the U.S. citizen spouse died while on active military duty.

@FilipinaAndTheForeigner Guys, I won't go for a refund. Figure that one out to forward the money. Thank you!
Sorry to say this, and sorry for the loss. But this is why you don't have a baby at 70 years old, and now leaving the wife and child without any money, it's very Irresponsible and selfish.
how are you sure that he didnt leave any money and benefit?
I don’t believe that is the case at all. Reports from people that knew him state he squared everything with SSA so that his family would be well cared for upon his passing. I’d say he was a very conscientious individual who cared a lot about his new family. RIP Mark🙏
@ these trolls were judgmental about mark. i followed his channel and he he was conscientious about his family.
You don't know their financial situation
Others have said he was in the process of trying to get ssi for the child, but he hadn't finished the process yet. Additionally, for spouse to claim survivor benefits, they need have been married at ten years and the surviving spouse needs to be at least 50 years of age if they have a disability, 60 years old minimum with no disability. The very young spouse would not qualify in either case. As for the child getting survivor benefits, it would remain to be seen. Hopefully, she and the child will be ok.
