CLIP DESCRIPTION:
As the plane taxis to the runway, there is confusion among the pilots due to their names.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This spoof of the Airport series of disaster movies relies on ridiculous sight gags, groan-inducing dialogue, and deadpan acting -- a comedy style that would be imitated for the next 20 years. Airplane! pulls out all the clichés as alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who's developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (Julie Hagerty). Food poisoning decimates the passengers and crew, leaving it up to Striker to land the plane, with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller (Lloyd Bridges) and Striker's vengeful former captain (Robert Stack), who must both talk him down. Along the way, we meet a clutch of stock disaster movie passengers like the guitar-strumming nun, a sick little girl, a frightened old lady, and two African-American travelers whose "jive" has to be subtitled. Leslie Nielsen portrays the plane's doctor, launching a new phase of the actor's career that carried him through the next two decades in several similarly comedic roles. The trio of directors Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, and David Zucker responsible for the film would eventually go on to solo careers, but not before making Top Secret! and Ruthless People.

It’s such a shame that you just can’t find a jet with a manual transmission anymore.
I’ve seen this movie a bunch of times, but never noticed that. Lol
LOLOLOL!!!!
Holy crap, how have I never noticed that? lol
That's Manuel!
Real planes have three pedals.
The joke per minute ratio of this movie is incredible
I don’t think there’s a single shot or interaction that isn’t a joke in some way
Yet well over half the dialog is straight out of the '50s movie Zero Hour! which was not a comedy...
That's the beauty of this movie. No matter how often you've see it before, you always catch a new joke that you've previously missed.
Depending on age, generation, and culture, some of the jokes will slip through the cracks, but to me this is comedy gold
every frame is in play not one object or person in frame is not being used for a joke. Classic yet perfectly subtle for the eye to catch every minute of it.
@@solracer66Yh people do overate this film in terms of ‘jokes per minute’ but they obviously have to change their definition of a joke to fit that. Definitely a lot of people with superiority complexes
It's pretty cool on how they slipped tiny gags into the film, like how the pilot puts the plane into gear, like a car, and when it left the gate, it made train noises. Later in the film, the plane makes propeller noises, although it's a 707, a _jet_ airliner.
Ha! I never noticed the train noises, that's fantastic
Slipped tiny gags into the film? I would argue that the film is entirely made up of gags; not that that's a bad thing, definitely one of my favourite movies.
Nicholas Tidemann Huh, I guess you're right. What kind of internet cookie do you want?
-smoke appears at waist level with that lady, showing us that that this aircraft uses manual transmission on the ground and a steam powered propeller engine.-
@@nicholastidemann9384 Keyword: "tiny". Just b/c the film is entirely made up of gags doesn't mean that they're all equally huge gags that are immediately noticed by everyone.
"Airplane!" saying "Roger Roger" before "Phantom Menace"
The may have been where they got the idea from
"The" "quotes" "are" "really" "unnecessary"
Woah... mind blown!
I might die if that gets made
In the movie description-"A traumatized, alcoholic airforce pilot must land the plane with the help of a glue sniffing air traffic controller." LMFAO
Well, to his defense, it was the wrong week to quit.
LOL....The plane takes off with the door wide open.
It’s value jet!
LOL YOU CANT TAXI WITH A DOOR OPEn
@@livanahartanto6661 why not?
love the train sound as it moves out too
@@livanahartanto6661 well actually you can, but it’s generally frowned upon.
I cannot believe it, these jokes are still around. They will never die.
"This is your watch! You might need this!"
"It's alright, it doesn't work!"
Lmfao
I still love how they got Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in this movie 😂
"You tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes."
Sssssssshhhhhhh his name is Roger Murdock and he’s a co-pilit 👀
I read that the character of Roger was first written for Pete Rose.
“And don’t call me Shirley!”
"Flight 2-0-9-er, you are clear for take off."
"Roger."
"Huh?"
"L.A. Departure frequency: 1-2-3.9-er."
"Roger."
"Huh?"
"Request vector, over."
"What?"
"Flight 2-0-9-er, clear for vector 3-2-4."
"We have clearance, Clarance."
"Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?"
"Tower's radio clearance, over!"
"That's Clarance Oveur, over."
"Roger."
"Huh?"
"Roger, over."
"What?"
"Huh?"
"Who?"
XD The best comedy writing ever.
this is good for CRM training too
movie guru897
Hilarious , Lol
O:40
can you imagine how much fun they had writing and rehearsing the script.
That’s Captain Over, over.
You are clear for clearance, Clarence.
Roger Roger. What's your vector, Victor?
Huh?!
who??
The steam locomotive noises get me everytime
I am embarrassed to say that I never really noticed that before. 🤣
@@daughterofolaf I like the prop plane sound they have for the jet.
Everything about this movie, sounds or visions, is hilarious. Have to watch multiple time in a row to see and hear everything the Zucker bros. put in it lol. For example ... anyone notice how the pilot is speeding the plane up off the runway? It's a standard transmission shaft from a car! LMAO!!!
😂😂😂 I did not noticed it. This movie got jokes inside jokes, no one can focus on all the jokes from the first time, the dialogue is a joke, the background of the scenes is joke, the action of the actors is a joke, you have to see the movie many times to get them all.
Roger roger
what's our vector Victor
What?
Who?
Justro Ling “roger roger.” - B1 battle droid
@@bunghole47 *_Roger-Roger_*
Almost every time I fly, I say this under my breath as we are about to take off. If the person next to me gives a little knowing chuckle, a know it's gonna be a good flight.
Which bit? Roger Roger?
Peter Graves ( the pilot) was known for suspense and action movies like Mission Impossible to see him do this was hilarious at the time
And before this film, nobody knew Leslie Nielsen was such a good comedic actor.
@@russs7574I don't even think Leslie Nielsen knew he was a good comedic actor before this lol
The whole film is brilliant. Parodying the train farewell but with a plane instead!
what's our vector, Victor hahahahahaha
HeidiSue60 lmao best part
im actually crying from laughing so hard, this is such a bloody good movie
Always reminds me of my Army time in Germany....with a guy who's last name was Morgan
Poor guy went nuts...
Underrated joke here fellow commenters! 😂😂
??
Rodrigo Terré Morgan sounds like Morgen, German for morning, a common greeting (Guten Morgen or just Morgen I believe).
@@majav15mg Thanks :D
"Morgen."
"Huh?"
@@majav15mg correct, in this case it would be along the lines of "Morgen, Morgan" :)
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has the greatest line known to man. It's just one word: "Huh"!. A great athlete in this movie. Kareem, u the man!! #Kareem = The man.
Why do people keep saying he's Kareem when he specifically says he isn't Kareem?
But its him.
no, he is the co-pilot
The hell I don’t
His name is Roger Murdock, Goddammit and he's co-pilot. not an athlete.
"It's alright! It doesn't work!" might be the funniest moment in this movie.
JaziB nah there are plenty better..
For me it was "I think the man sitting next to me is a Doctor" "Sir, are you a doctor?" "That's right."
One of my favorites: "We have clearance, Clarence." "Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?"
The "Who?" makes the whole clip. :)
+smittykins Who? "The Who" :)
Sorry no. Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker made this, The Who made 'Tommy'.
Who's on first
Roger ouver
I don't know. THIRD BASE!
I watched this many times in the 80's, and still laughed out loud. Hilarious scene ever😂
I love when he put the plane to first gear
Nothing can stop me to watch this movie now.
Never ever gets old 🤣
The lines and characters aside, the incredible timing you have to have between all 3 and the Tower for it to work this well... Sheer brilliance!
Thats 20+ gags/jokes in about a minute
And they keep up roughly this pace the entire movie
Dad and I had dinner together in a restaurant in
Austrailia with Leslie Nielson and we were pissed because we we so hungry and our food wasn't coming. So We started playing "Airplane" Dialogue ..... It was one of the best funniest times in my life... And who knew....now I speak JIVE......
you are so lucky! That is in my top 3 dinner fantasies!
You can see it in Peter Graves' face that he's holding back laughing when he shifts the plane into gear. What a classic
lmao!! "What? Huh? Who?" I don't know why but that always stands out as the funniest scene for me 🤣😂🤣
This scene is just pure genius!
I'd fly any plane that has manual transmission
This movie is over 40 years old, and it's STILL funny.
Alright! The planes a manual shift..
fun fact: the incessant shifting in the original Fast and the Furious movie was inspired by this takeoff sequence
...I love this movie SO MUCH.
We have clearance clarence, Roger Roger what's our vector Victor..... Roger eh? Still cracks me up now.
Golden classic that still works today.
The farewell scene with open plane door is such a comical parody of similar train scenes. 😂
And the plane sounds like a train as well 😂
this still is genious.....
Lol I just noticed that the plane sounds like a steam engine when it's taking off
surely these are the best lines i have ever seen
How the plane takes off it sounds like a train!
I quote this movie all the time....Mostly at work. When things go wrong at work I say "I guess I picked the a bad day to quite sniffing glue." Or "Oh my God it's coming right at us.." And if things are really bad, I will grab one of the kids and shake them and say "We Got to get out of here...We got to get out of here!!!" I love funny movies...it's not funny that they don't make funny movies anymore. "Tropic Thunder" was the last funny movie that I saw, and that was like the "Airplane" of the war films. Thank you for sharing this clip!!
HUH? WHAT? HUH?
My first time. That was what I was saying.
DEAR GOD - I LOVE THIS MOVIE !!! 👍👍👍👍👍

POV: He is secretly a Battle Droid
The greatest.
possibly the best gag in cinema history
Certainly a recipe for confusion.
"What's our vector Victor?" - one of my all-time favourite lines! 😂Together with "We've got clearance Clarence!"😄Sheer genius!
i haven't even seen the movie yet, but i know these lines
such a classic
If you still haven't seen it, this is your reminder. Watch now! You don't want to be one who hasn't seen Airplane. God forbid you missed Breakfast Club. Pick em both up at your nearest Blockbuster, now!
@@FrankBostonI have watched it since, and realized I even knew more scenes from friends quoting them all the time... It was brilliant from start to end
They redid this joke twice in Airplane II: The Sequel:
-The flight crew is made up of Captain Oveur, Co-pilot Unger, and Engineer Dunn. Unger & Dunn served under Oveur in the Air Force, but Dunn was over Unger.
-The stewardess Mary asks the flight crew if they’d like to order breakfast. They all order steak & eggs, but Captain Oveur asks to make his “poached. Over.” Mary gets confused because “we don’t make them poached and over. Over.” The end of the gag has her saying “You’re the captain, Captain Oveur. Over.”
"We have clearance Clarence", "Roger Roger, what's out vector Victor?"
We have clearance, Clarence.
Roger rodger, what's our vector, victor?
The modern version of "Who's on first"
This movie should be praised more often.
RIP Kobe Byrant ♥️♥️
RIP 🪦 Peter Graves
Taxiing down the runway hanging out of the open door of the plane 😆😆😆
Roger Rodger!!!!
Man is a feeling creature,
Wow, a 4 Speed on a Commercial Jet.!!!
Roger Roger, whats our vector Víctor? the best sentence there whit a seriuous face jajaja
comedy gold
hahaha i love this classic movie! Kareem is here!
This film and its sequel are the definition of pants wettingly funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😅
Over 40 years old, and still one of the funniest movies ever made. This was the film in which Leslie Nielsen made his debut as a comedic actor. The problem is that quite a bit of the humor will go right over the heads of Gen Z, because much of it was topical to the early 80's.
Early on during the pandemic, we did a lot of meetups on Zoom. I have headphones with a mic. Someone thought I looked like an airline pilot. Well, that was my cue and without missing a beat I pretended I was a pilot and said, "We have clearance, Clarence. Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?" to the delight of everyone.
Bugger, now I have to download this movie, so bad but so clever.
HUH
Iam crying 😂, who watch this at 2020?
My teacher's also called Peter and whenever people call him I say 'What?'
The CIS owns this video now

did they ever gag on the navigator's last name "Basta"? I only recall them playing with his first name, Victor
Roger, Clarence and Victor
Roger, Clearance and Vector
Victor is played by Frank Ashmore, who voiced Leo Galante in both Mafia 2 and Mafia 3
The clankas own this film now
I’m gonna say that when I get a job as a pilot 😂
They are choice. And don't call me Shirley. LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

Flight Engineer Victor Basta
Clarence, Roger and Victor
0:49 They actually screwed up, the navigator's name is Victor, the white pilot's Clarence so he shouldn't have reacted to the navigator's "Request vector, over". Oh well. Still funny though.
Over
yarpen26 he’s not a Navigator he’s a flight engineer
At 0:40 I set it to 1.5x speed and proceed to die from laughter.
