Thanks for the review. Looking into purchasing a "gas" weed eater and this put things into perspective. Since my wife already purchased a Ryobi product, I'll stick with Ryobi for now. Plus, your review definitely proved it will do for my lawn.
I have been running the carbon fiber Gen 1 Ryobi 40V trimmer for 2 seasons now with daily commercial grade use. It's my favorite tool I own. That's a bit of a heavy battery to run , but well worth the cost if you have other 40V Ryobi tools
Good honest looking review. I actually started with the little 18 volt string trimmer as I have 32 Ryobi 18 volt tools and thought this one would do the job. The honest truth is that it's great for around trees an occasional bush and the four mailboxes on my side of the road but it's only a single line of 065 and is not powerful enough for taller thick grass or thicker weeds. I have started to purchase the 40 volt tools and will get the new trimmer in the spring when the 2023 models show up. Thanks and I sure hope you get to fish in that nice looking pond.
Ryobi is getting very bold with their pricing lately. Especially with HP and their 40v lineup. A 40v battery costing over $200 is nuts because they used to be the cheap, affordable brand. Now their "Milwaukee" is showing a bit.
Solid. I just got their 40v cross cut mower that comes with 2 6AH batteries so I'd like to pick up the trimmer that also comes with a 6ah battery for 3 total & 2 chargers. I can mow my yard with 1 battery & have to switch to the other for about 3 passes at the end. I'm sure there's enough juice I can maybe get the trimmer tool no battery or charger but to have a 3rd battery & 2nd charger would be sweet.
I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
Brett, great video. Thanks. I bought this a year ago and it is a fantastic trimmer. However the spool head is not as easy as you claim. To unlock the head is a royal PITA. Even after that the string would not wind evenly and would always jam up. I finally gave up and bought a Speed Feed head which works so much better. It's true the batteries are great as long as you have the fast charger. The small slow charger takes four hours to fully charge a 4 AH battery which is what mine came with. One more caveat, after a year you need to relubricate the gear head and the flex rod in the shaft. It started making noise, and when I took it apart there was hardly any grease on the flex rod inside. After greasing with some Red Armor lithium grease it was humming once again.
@@cuppadan You have the attachment-capable 16" Ryobi string trimmer. The one in the video is the Whisper 17" trimmer with a 6 Ah battery, which does not need relubrication and does not run well with a 4 Ah battery.
Man! I really wanted to love this product. I purchased one 5 days ago because my 6 year old Ryobi weed eater/edger died. The new trimmer has been nothing but problems so far. The first one died 10min after I fired it up, the second one had a battery issue from the factory, and now the third one has a sticky trigger and I can’t get it to turn off after I use it! Home Depot is tired of seeing me and I’m not sure I want to give this trimmer a 4th try.
@@Brettsgrasscapades Unfortunately, I took my THIRD one back a few days ago and immediately went to ACE to get the EGO Line IQ. So far, the EGO is performing great! I really wanted the Ryobi to work out because I have so many Ryobi products, but it didn't seem like it was in the cards.
The best battery-operated weed wacker for me would be one that can cut through tall growth without cutting off like the 3 Echos you tested in another video. The Echo DPAS 2600 would have to one consideration. Having said that, this Ryobi surprises me considering the lower voltage (40V vs 56V). The negative reviews on Home Depot are worth reading though. It also appears the plastic cutting blades are no longer included.
I chose the 40V HP with carbon shaft but not the whisper quiet one. That one I didn’t like the shaft connector joint seems loose even though bolts were tightened. Also it’s not attachment capable since motor is in the trimming head. Pretty happy with mine so far but time will tell. The extra head with blades is a nice throw-in to the kit.Not quite as much power as gas but much quieter & very convenient.

In terms of battery engineering and tool build quality, I would agree that EGO is tops, but in terms of heavy duty cutting involving thick, tall growth, I'm not so sure after seeing his other video where he tested three EGO trimmers. They all briefly cut off under load.
The cutting diameter gets cut down a lot with them. Probably to about 12 inches. Also if going around things like fences, trees, you will easily break them. They are good for open areas.
I have this model. I tried the plastic blades and broke one on my first time out. I was probably trying to cut something larger than it was designed for. Have you had the head apart? I'd like to know if I could put a forester brush blade on that head. I don't see how the head comes apart.
I think honestly after using them both for the last few months I'd go ryobi if I wasn't invested in either line. But if you're already invested in ego you'll be happy there too.
I have a dewalt trimmer, I think it was $260. I'm a retired landscaper and that dewalt is as powerful as a new gas trimmer, I was floored when I first used it. 2 speed for trimming after cutting I just use the low speed, if there are heavy areas that haven't been cut in months this will fly through it.
I bought the 15" version of this (came in a dual pack with a leaf blower). When I try to replace the spool head with the hard plastic cutter head, it WILL NOT LOCK. I can't turn it at all. It'll turn if I don't install a head at all. I can see the tabs move into place that locks the head, but if I put either on, they won't lock. Has anyone had this problem? Did you solve it? I'm tempted to try and file the four holes on each head to make them a little bigger. I'm at a loss here; I'd really not have to go through the hassle of returning these things.
I think honestly after using them both for the last few months I'd go ryobi if I wasn't invested in either line. But if you're already invested in ego you'll be happy there too.
When the Lower Housing and Spool Assembly will not un-lock its not so simple to add the Fixed Line and Blade Housing Assembly. Mine is brand new, never used, and the locking mechanism is stuck, it will not rotate. Push in & rotate counter-clockwise to remove??? Sound easy, but its not if it will not rotate. It seems the Upper Housing and Locking Assembly (Inc. Key No. 48) is poorly designed. Ryobi customer service/support is a 100% joke. I"m not convinced it even exists. After 4-hrs of trying I have not spoken with anyone yet. Put that in your rating for this crappy design. Thanks.
The brushed version of this product is absolutely terrible. I had the expand it and it would get real hot and smoke while only string trimming my first season with it. Revoews suggested it was a common problem. Then when I bought the edger attachment it died first use. However, the brushless expand it has been an absolute workhorse.
Ryobi is hit and miss with a lot of their tool line. And they could of put a better string head on it like Echo or EGO does and downside also cant use other batteries so thats a big Fail.
I would like to confirm your statement that you cannot use other smaller Ryobi 40V batteries. I tried my lighter 4 Ah blower battery and the trimmer would constantly shut off if I press the trigger fully. If I use the 6 Ah battery it came with it works as it should. You can use the fixed line head or put an aftermarket head on.
I have an 18 v one and it is absolute garbage. Won't cut more than a few seconds then string jams or gets stuck. Tried all types os string up to .095. Junk. Do not waste your money.
I had one, it broke the first time I used it. Instead of trying to fix it or find someone to fix it. I threw it in the garbage, because IMOH it is trash and not even worth fixing. Because this carbon fiber trimmer will just break again. If I have to keep fixing an electric trimmer, it defeats the purpose of having an electric trimmer. So no, no rebate, no ryobi technical help, just garbage. Its garbage, you wasted your money, so did I. Lesson learned. @Ryobi

Thanks.
Slow charge your batteries. The charge last longer. Also keep dry. Put batteries in a cooler whe it's hot
For a guy that doesn't like weed whacking you sure do have a lot of them... 🤔😁👊🏼
The brushed version of this product is absolutely terrible. I had the expand it and it would get real hot and smoke while only string trimming my first season with it. Revoews suggested it was a common problem. Then when I bought the edger attachment it died first use.
However, the brushless expand it has been an absolute workhorse.
If you weren’t invested in either brand, would you buy the ego line IQ or this?
Thats a great question! If I was forced to choose stand alone Ryobi over Ego line IQ I think I might have to give it to the Ryobi on this one.
@@Brettsgrasscapades Can you please give some reasons why you would choose the Ryobi over the Ego?
Ryobi is hit and miss with a lot of their tool line. And they could of put a better string head on it like Echo or EGO does and downside also cant use other batteries so thats a big Fail.
It is similar to the Echo speed feed head actually.
What the hell is that robot driving around your yard? A roomba?
It's a Husqvarna automower.
ha when a ryobi multifunction
Could do without that annoying music… rather hear the tool run than bongos. Other than that good video.
Cutting in shorts? 😅😅
He trimming with shorts on. I know debris hitting his legs lol
Battery lawn tools like this are becoming no brainer for home owners over gas options
Absolutely they are. There really is no reason to buy gas for most homeowners.
More lawn videos less product reviews please.
Why spend $300 on a trimmer?
I have an 18 v one and it is absolute garbage. Won't cut more than a few seconds then string jams or gets stuck. Tried all types os string up to .095. Junk. Do not waste your money.
To much Yappin bro ,geez
Flaunting your AutoMower.....
Always!
Impressive, yet out of my price range....mic drop...
Ryobi... Bahahahahahahahah
@Ryobi
