  • There was a time when the state of Iowa’s women’s high schools played 6 on 6. This ended in 1993. Yes, just 30 years ago. Of course, the college game is much different. Especially now. Catlin Clark has taken the game’s popularity to another level. So much so, that 14.3 million tuned in last Friday night.
In my opinion, she can now be mentioned in the same sentence as Simon Biles, Mia Hamm, Serena Williams, and Danica Patrick. Those who can remember the night on September 30, 1973, when Billy Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in the famed Battle of the Sexes. A definite watershed moment for women’s sports. 45 million watched.
You can go back as far as the 1930s and 1940s to find what can arguably be the greatest women’s athlete of the 20th century, Babe Didrikson Zaharius. Clark, in my opinion, has yet to accomplish as much of those mentioned, but she certainly has made as big of an impact on the sport of women’s basketball as anyone. She is one of the GOATS in her sport with a lot remaining to be written.
