Vietnam History From the middle of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century, there was almost exclusively war. We had to fight against the invasion all of that time. + 1858 to 1940 we had war against French colonialism. + 1940 to 1945 we had war against Japan Empire during WW2. August 1945, we took advantage of the world situation when Japanese surrendered to the Allies and with the support of OSS ( now known as CIA ), we declared independence, once again, after 100 years.the relationship between VN and the USA was still good back then. The USA was the first superpowers support Vietnam's independence not Soviet, at that time the Soviet Union didn't even care who or where Vietnam was, they only cared about getting a share after WW2. But by the end of 1945 the French wanted to return to VN and Indochina to restore the colonial system. So the French told to USA that if the USA supported VN independence, French would join the Soviet side. So the US chose French Their old ally instead of VN. Although President HO CHI MINH wrote a letter to thanks and wish to cooperate with the USA in the future, and asked an OSS officer to send it to President Truman with the desire to convince the US that Vietnam is a country built on nationalism, not pure communism. But with the world political situation at that time, the letter never reached the desk of the US president! + 1946 to 1954 we must join the war agianst French again. We won the war in 1954 after the battle of Dien Bien Phu. so The French surrender and withdraw due to Geneva agreement. But Geneve agreement has a provision that VN will be divided at 17th parallel for 2 years before we can unify our country. But in 1955, when "A Red Scare" made the USA fear about the expansion of communism in Asia, so the USA sabotaged the Geneva agreement by supporting South VN built its own government against the communist government in the North. Because of that So instead of peacefully unifying after 2 years like we signed in Geneva agreement, we had to go through a war with USA and its allies for almost 20 years. + 1955-1965 was a period of war between the Republic of VN supported by the USA and VC ( Liberation Army of South Vietnam, the force that used the flag, half blue, half red ) supported by North VN and Soviet allies. + 1965-1973 USA send their troop to VN after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, and in 1973, after the failure of Linebacker II, USA signed Paris agreement and Withdraw their Troop out of VN. + 1973-1975 War between South VN vs VC and North VietNam. After the fall of Saigon 30/4/1975, the war to Reunification of VN is Over. But the peace and joy of unification did not last long. In 1977 Khmer Rouge began to attack vn southern border massacre thousands of Civilians. At first we chose to talk peacefully because we didn't want to start a new war; but they did not accept it. So in 1978 we launched a total war against Khmer Rouge and captured their capital after 1 month. And we found out that during the time Khmer Rouge rule Cambodia (1975-1978) they organized hundreds of massacres, kiling thousands of innocent Cambodians. We reported it to the UN, but no one believed us except Soviets. Most of them, led by China, said that VN were invading Cambodia to prepare for a plan to build a federation of Indochina. And in 1979 China, the thousand year old enemy of Vietnam, used the excuse of " TEACHING VIETNAM A LESSON" and launched a war to attack the northern border of VN. China also boldly announced that they would capture Hanoi in just a week. But they couldn't :)) Although at that time most of the VN Main Force was in Cambodia, the northern border only had local force, but with the courage and tenacity they were able to stop the Main Force of China, some places even fought until the last man died. The phone calls they sent back to Hanoi only said " We fought to the last bullet and out of supply, farewell comrades and long live Vietnam". Immediately when knowing that China was attacking Vietnam, the Soviet Union dispatched a large number of aircraft to Cambodia to transport the Main Force of the VN back to the North. And in addition The Soviets also held the largest military exercise in history of that time, with more than 20 infantry divisions near the northern border of China preparing for a War to protect VN. When the main force of VN reached the North and prepared to fight back. But China chose to withdraw because they fear of having war with both VN main force on their southern border and Soviets on the Northern border at the same time. Although the total war with China ended in spring of 1979, there still have some small conflict with China on the northern border and island in East VN Sea, or international name is South China Sea, until 1989. And for Cambodia ,after overthrowing the khmer rouge, Vietnam helped Cambodia build a new goverment as it now. And Vietnam troops stayed in Cambodia until 1989 to help Cambodia fight the remnants of Khmer Rouge guerrillas force hiding at the Cambodia and Thailand border. After Viet Nam withdrawn our troops from Cambodia, China accepted to negotiate peace and normalize diplomatic relations in 1990. That was when Vietnam officially had complete Peace and 5 years later in 1995, Vietnam also officially normalized diplomatic relations with the USA. Vietnam may not be the strongest country in the world, but we have fought against almost all the superpower countries in the world.

countless of wars have tore through our country's land, it's a miracle that we're still standing strong and we're able to become this developed, maybe not just a miracle but the sacrifices our people made to bring us to this day. Our history maybe filled with endless amount of wars and battles, the only thing we yearn for is peace and prosperity, but if there's anyone who dare disrupt it, we'll show them what's good.

I am very proud that I am Vietnamese. The war only ended in 1990, but Vietnam has developed very strongly in just 31 short years.

@@hoadinh5160 Năm 75 mới là giải phóng toàn bộ miền nam thống nhất đất nước thôi. Đợt dồn tổng lực giải phóng miền nam nên Hoàng Sa lực lượng mỏng nên a TQ sang thăm. Đến năm 89 mới thực sự kết thúc với A bạn Trung Quốc nhé, kết quả thì Hoàng Sa a TQ ăn mịa luôn. Chiến tranh biên giới năm 79 kết thúc đầu năm 80 nhưng lằng nhằng còn dài.

Vietnam History From the middle of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century, there was almost exclusively war. We had to fight against the invasion all of that time.
+ 1858 to 1940 we had war against French colonialism.
+ 1940 to 1945 we had war against Japan Empire during WW2.
August 1945, we took advantage of the world situation when Japanese surrendered to the Allies and with the support of OSS ( now known as CIA ), we declared independence, once again, after 100 years.the relationship between VN and the USA was still good back then. The USA was the first superpowers support Vietnam's independence not Soviet, at that time the Soviet Union didn't even care who or where Vietnam was, they only cared about getting a share after WW2.
But by the end of 1945 the French wanted to return to VN and Indochina to restore the colonial system. So the French told to USA that if the USA supported VN independence, French would join the Soviet side. So the US chose French Their old ally instead of VN. Although President HO CHI MINH wrote a letter to thanks and wish to cooperate with the USA in the future, and asked an OSS officer to send it to President Truman with the desire to convince the US that Vietnam is a country built on nationalism, not pure communism. But with the world political situation at that time, the letter never reached the desk of the US president!
+ 1946 to 1954 we must join the war agianst French again. We won the war in 1954 after the battle of Dien Bien Phu. so The French surrender and withdraw due to Geneva agreement. But Geneve agreement has a provision that VN will be divided at 17th parallel for 2 years before we can unify our country.
But in 1955, when "A Red Scare" made the USA fear about the expansion of communism in Asia, so the USA sabotaged the Geneva agreement by supporting South VN built its own government against the communist government in the North.
Because of that So instead of peacefully unifying after 2 years like we signed in Geneva agreement, we had to go through a war with USA and its allies for almost 20 years.
+ 1955-1965 was a period of war between the Republic of VN supported by the USA and VC ( Liberation Army of South Vietnam, the force that used the flag, half blue, half red ) supported by North VN and Soviet allies.
+ 1965-1973 USA send their troop to VN after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, and in 1973, after the failure of Linebacker II, USA signed Paris agreement and Withdraw their Troop out of VN.
+ 1973-1975 War between South VN vs VC and North VietNam. After the fall of Saigon 30/4/1975, the war to Reunification of VN is Over.
But the peace and joy of unification did not last long. In 1977 Khmer Rouge began to attack vn southern border massacre thousands of Civilians. At first we chose to talk peacefully because we didn't want to start a new war; but they did not accept it.
So in 1978 we launched a total war against Khmer Rouge and captured their capital after 1 month. And we found out that during the time Khmer Rouge rule Cambodia (1975-1978) they organized hundreds of massacres, kiling thousands of innocent Cambodians.
We reported it to the UN, but no one believed us except Soviets. Most of them, led by China, said that VN were invading Cambodia to prepare for a plan to build a federation of Indochina.
And in 1979 China, the thousand year old enemy of Vietnam, used the excuse of " TEACHING VIETNAM A LESSON" and launched a war to attack the northern border of VN. China also boldly announced that they would capture Hanoi in just a week. But they couldn't :)) Although at that time most of the VN Main Force was in Cambodia, the northern border only had local force, but with the courage and tenacity they were able to stop the Main Force of China, some places even fought until the last man died. The phone calls they sent back to Hanoi only said " We fought to the last bullet and out of supply, farewell comrades and long live Vietnam".
Immediately when knowing that China was attacking Vietnam, the Soviet Union dispatched a large number of aircraft to Cambodia to transport the Main Force of the VN back to the North. And in addition The Soviets also held the largest military exercise in history of that time, with more than 20 infantry divisions near the northern border of China preparing for a War to protect VN. When the main force of VN reached the North and prepared to fight back. But China chose to withdraw because they fear of having war with both VN main force on their southern border and Soviets on the Northern border at the same time.
Although the total war with China ended in spring of 1979, there still have some small conflict with China on the northern border and island in East VN Sea, or international name is South China Sea, until 1989.
And for Cambodia ,after overthrowing the khmer rouge, Vietnam helped Cambodia build a new goverment as it now. And Vietnam troops stayed in Cambodia until 1989 to help Cambodia fight the remnants of Khmer Rouge guerrillas force hiding at the Cambodia and Thailand border.
After Viet Nam withdrawn our troops from Cambodia, China accepted to negotiate peace and normalize diplomatic relations in 1990.
That was when Vietnam officially had complete Peace and 5 years later in 1995, Vietnam also officially normalized diplomatic relations with the USA.
Vietnam may not be the strongest country in the world, but we have fought against almost all the superpower countries in the world.
