  • Welcome to Bob Jones REALTOR and the last October Construction Update for the Gordie Howe Bridge Project.
The crossings between Canada and the United States, whether by Water, Rail, or Road have become increasingly critical to both countries burgeoning economies. For almost 100 years the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor/Detroit Tunnel have proven their worth many times over.
Time marches on however, and the increasing volume of traffic has burdened the existing infrastructure, frustrated traffic, increased time and cost on transporting goods, increased intercity pollution.
Years past as deliberations for a new crossing battled for consensus on the Herb Gray Parkway and the Gordie Howe Bridge. Agreements were made and we now have infrastructure in place that will support the growth in traffic for the decades down the road.
We can see the Gordie Howe Bridge’s construction progress on multiple fronts. With continued advancements in safety features, the plaza buildings and the bridge decks, we are well on track to complete a significant infrastructural asset for both countries. Like and subscribe. This is Bob Jones, and I will see you in the next video!

Blue water has 2 bridges and the older one is only 10 years younger then ambassador. Bluewater is like 28 dollars for normal 53fter and ambassador is 67.50 for 53fter . We started hauling hazmat over ambassador Tuesday ❤. So far so good , ambassador bridge escort teams have been doing great and working with us ❤ I’m sure when the new bridge is open , ambassador will lower cost , with all the trucks we need 3 bridges ❤

Hi AFT. I'm glad they have a solution to hazard material transport without having to take another three or four hour detour to the BlueWater Bridge. The truck ferry should have never been closed before the Gordie Howe Bridge was in operation. I am not a trucker, so don't claim to know the risk of having hazardous materials transported over a bridge that is not qualified for such transport. Not that I expect a mishap, however if it did happen, how would they contain it to the bridge? Just curious. Also, do you believe they should continue the practice after the Gordie Howe is open? I really appreciate having the professionals sharing their experience with our viewers. Thanks for your insight!! 👍

@ agreed the truck ferry should be open , both us and Canada government didn’t want to fund it . , and the ambassador bridge now has a catch basin to collect any that might leak , and all bridge workers r trained in hazmat clean up and other hazmat training. So far with the escorts it’s working great . R little company alone has already taken 30 loads over since Tuesday . Don’t forget the diesels fuel in semi truck fuel tanks r more dangerous this the hazmat load . Can’t wait to the new bridge is open

12 Years later, they roll out the sod. This project lives up to the Old Union trades motto: "Don't Kill the Job!"
This reminds me of 4 Rail Bridges we built crossing a highway years ago, we seen a laborer carrying like 8 - 12 foot long 2x4's, and we stopped him and told him not to Kill the Job, and that he should carry no more than 3 2x4's. For the remainder of that summer, that guy NEVER was seen carrying more than 1 single 2x4 at a time. And we would laugh every time we seen him.
    That is the Union way.

Hi Brent. I hear you. It's a two way street to be fair. Once in a union time studies watch to make sure the workers are carrying their load of work, and if there is room, more work is added. It's counterproductive even though it is there to keep the workers busy. Unlike working for a small jobber where everybody needs to pull for the company to survive. Good comment. Thanks!😎👍

    • @BasementEngineer

To charge the same fee for trucks, cars, and motorcycles is highway robbery!
Fees should be based on maintenance and repair costs to the bridge incurred by the vehicle size and weight.
If the load limit for the bridge is kept below the fatigue limit of the steel structure, with proper care and maintenance it will have an almost indefinite life span.
Consequently it can be determined what load and wheel arrangement causes how much in maintenance costs.
It appears that the powers-that-be of the G-H bridge took this into consideration to some extend; although $8 for trucks seems rather low in my opinion. Mind you, these are not the final prices as stated by the author.

@@TruckerAl_YQG I guess I didn't explain myself well enough. When I said truck I meant a pickup or SUV. Commercial vehicles are 16 Canadian dollars plus 4 dollars for each additional axle. So a five ton truck is 16 bucks, a typical semi would be with five axles will be 28 dollars. A logging truck will be 36 to 40 dollars. Newer logging trailers use one less axle. An oversized load starts at 430 dollars then the trucker has to get a quote for every additional axle.

Tolls are rumored to be $8 per truck? Not likely. The current toll at the Ambassador Bridge is $13.50 USD PER AXLE ($67.50 USD) for a standard 18-wheel truck to cross the bridge. I've certainly seen the government make fiscal blunders before but does anyone actually believe that the government is going to provide a discount of nearly $60 per truck to commercial vehicles?
Doing so would certainly shift virtually ALL truck traffic from the Ambassador Bridge to the Howe but the cost of the Howe would shift to the Canadian taxpayer from the users of the bridge.

As a truck driver I don't see how much it cost because I have the toll pass in the truck. From what the toll schedule online says, my company pays $78 cdn to cross heavy, and about $54 to cross empty. Thats absolutely ridiculous, but I know why they are charging an exorbitant rate - they know the commercial trucks and most cars will be crossing the GH Bridge next fall. They know they may as well shut down and demolish the old bridge.

The Ambassador Bridge is paid for so the bridge company can adjust their price to undercut the Howe bridge, should they choose to do so.
More importantly, as much of the truck traffic will shift to the Howe, so will the delays; it's not about how many lanes on the bridge but, rather, how quickly Customs clears the trucks. If Canada assigns more Customs agents to the Howe, the burden on the Canadian taxpayer increases.
Odds are, the delays caused by a handful of traffic lights between the Ambassador Bridge and the 401 will be offset by the waiting time on the Howe.
Of course, I could be wrong.

Hi Canadiantrucker. I know the Ambassador is really expensive for the transports. I think the Ambassador will still profit with cars and trucks going to the innercities. @@bobjonesrealtor7756: It's all speculation at this point but I spent a number of years driving a truck myself and the slowdowns at Customs on both sides of the river didn't have much to do with technology.
The cargo manifests have been submitted electronically for about ten years and all the loads are pre-cleared prior to the truck arriving at Customs. Most cross-border drivers have a FAST card and it only takes a few seconds to get approval for entry.
The delays seem to be (this is speculation) caused by the Customs agents just slowing down the process, perhaps to meet an average time standard - just a guess.

Not really a one sided deal. Why not? While it is nice for Michigan and the U.S. to have the bridge, for Canada it is essential. The biggest problem is the owner of the Ambassador bridge did *everything* to ban a new crossing and then delayed it as much as possible. There was even a ballot proposal in Michigan to stop the bridge. So to get Michigan to pay half of it up front wasn't going to happen.

The bridge, which is set to open in 2025, will accept E-ZPass for toll payments, similar to other toll facilities in the region. This will facilitate a seamless travel experience for users who are accustomed to using E-ZPass on various toll roads and bridges across the northeastern United States and parts of Canada.
