Come back randomly to this video every now and again. It’s just so entertaining. And absolutely perfection with timing the waves head and following sea. Exactly how I would have done it that’s for sure.
This brings me back 50 years. My father had excellent piloting skills and mother was a brilliant navigator. Every weekend from just past ice out until the first winter snow we were out there. If the watch hill light was flying small craft warnings we would stay inshore. There was plenty of times that the small craft warning was put up in the afternoon when we were 25 miles offshore. We tried not to pound the boat but sometimes you have no choice. While my peers were smoking dope, listening to led zeppelin in some dank basement, I was with my dear departed parents in a blizzard half way back from block island. A good way to grow up. I suspect that overzealous government agents might object to taking your children out in 15 foot waves in a glued and screwed wooden boat.
It is all coming back to me. I clearly remember people hitch hiking to the Woodstock festival. They got to spend the weekend in the cold rain and mud. It was very unpleasant on the boat that weekend also, but fun nonetheless. Alvin Lee playing Going Home with steam coming off of him demonstrates how miserable the weather was.
There are some big waves that clearly cover the horizon at 8:25 and 2:50. Since the camera is mounted 10' over the water, it confirms that the waves are at least that tall at those times.
So many keyboard captains.....the GoPro never really shows the sea state accurately and each captain has their perception of wave height due to their own experience and capabilities. Good vid in my opinion thanks for sharing.
Gotta love to comments coming from people who don't understand the difference in the great lakes waves vs ocean. Lake Erie can get nasty not only the height of them but how close they can be together. Great video
East coast gets similar large but short period waves, the west coast gets HUGE, but the wave period is double or more than the great lakes and east coast. Once took the NMLBS instructors out of Ocracoke inlet in 6-7 foot breaking bar conditions, direct quote here "How the F-- do you DO anything in this!" Also will point out that even though this is 4-5 foot seas, this is harder to deal with than 14-18 foot seas on the west coast!
I had an 07 model loved the boat except in a following sea. They sit high in the water and you have to trim them right up to reduce the risk of broaching.
You can see where the water is breaking so far forward you've got the bow of the boat pinned down too far he's up on the trim or the trim tabs the ride would be just as good can you get much better fuel mileage happy boating :-)
I think he handled it well , no drama and every one returned on board ,unhurt , and still talking to each other . We have a tide running on top off that lot in the English channel , but your lake is nearly as big as G B .
Great clip. Elk Rapids is our home port too. For those that aren't local he's only on one half of Grand Traverse Bay, he's still 15 miles from open Lake Michigan. Had you gone beyond the Peninsula wave heights would've certainly doubled. Fall on the Great Lakes!
I wish lake Erie would have those nice spread out waves like that! Due to our lake being so shallow, the waves get to 3-5's and you gotta call it a day because of how close together the sets are. :(

My skills are fairly basic, in these conditions I trim down, back off the throttle, hit the waves at 45 degrees and NEVER get parallel in a trough. But that’s probably a bigger deal for me, in my 13 foot speedboat I I try to avoid this stuff where possible. That said, I’ve been surprised at the size of waves she has coped with by adjusting the trim, angling her bows against them, easing on the gas to climb the face of each wave and backing right off down the other side into the trough.

no problem going into the waves, a little tricky when going with the waves. You have to trim the engines up to prevent the boat from bow steering (broaching). I also went to a prop with bigger blades (Enertia) to get more grip in following seas. Had a lot of prop slip with the stock props (vengeance).
Enjoyed the video. If you are like me, you avoid days like this, but it's nice to know that your boat performs. Off shore fishing with today's technology is very safe for people with common sense. Where was this filmed??
Why does everyone exaggerate the size of waves. Is this like a D measuring contest? Definitely heavy seas but nowhere near 7-8' with occasional 10's. I'm trying to research Sundancers in rough water for a possible purchase and almost every video they have 10' seas. My gosh!
Ben Alvarez it's a boat... The hull had no issues and it didn't hit hard at all considering the wave height. For hull cracking to occur, the boat would have to be pushed much harder in much larger seas
Tim Stoldt I guess what worries me is my boats age. It doesn’t appear to have any visual cracks or damage, but it’s a 99’. So I’m sure the hull isn’t as strong as it used to be.
Rae Anker 100% agree. Trim the boat down, give it more power, and stop the nose from diving. The waves were not that big the boat should not have been going almost nose under.
trim the bow down? In following seas?? Ummm.. Opposite of what you should do.. Have you been on Lake Michigan? Our "rollers" can be tight.
