I recently bought the heavy 6 cell inserts I have seen videos before on the and I was surprised/disappointed to see that they didnt have the big hole at the bottom just small slits...how am I suposed to get little seedlings out without room to push them up?
I have used the 2.5 inch seed starting pots in the 32 pot arrangement. I have used a peet based seed starting mix. The issue i am having now is that how do i get the seedlings out to get them up potted? The soil mix is adhering to the pots. i have tried to use a spoon or fork to gently pry them out but this just throws soil and seedlings in different direciions. i need to up pot soon.
Is there a reason why the 32-cell trays are not deep enough to reach the bottom of the 1020 tray for bottom watering like the other cell trays? I see many others commenting about the same issue but have not seen an explanation for this difference in design.
The main reason is so they fit rockwool cubes in addition to the inserts. If they were deeper they would require thicker or doubled up rockwool and the inserts would end up being smaller to be able to sit deeper.
@@BootstrapFarmer Hopefully you’ll see this question, since it’s been a year since the original post. So my question is: Does that mean to bottom water with the, one would need to add twice the amount of water needed when using the Seed Starter Pots?
@@deboz8793 It really depends on soil/media and plant needs as well as surrounding growing environment. As in, if your soil holds moisture you may not need a set amount of water but rather sips as the plant needs. Hotter environments may require more.
hello, I have a couple 1020 trays with 200 cells. plan was to start flowers in them. problem I'm having is I'm not getting good germination and having trouble keeping them moist. is this the wrong tray or is there a trick I'm missing? thought about keeping water in the tray. do you think that would help? ty for the video info. 🙂
I always like to make sure to top water the first couple of days with a mister. That seems to help. Also check the temp requirements of the variety you are working with. www.bootstrapfarmer.com/blogs/how-to-grow-seedlings is a list of related articles that may additionally help.
Sorry kind of new to this. So if you buy the 72 cell tray what bottom do you need to go with it ? I usually only plant peppers, tomatoes. I see all kinds of bottom trays. Do I only need the 72 cell tray with a solid bottom? Or do you need a solid bottom and then a middle tray with holes in as well?
Hi, hope I can provide some insight. With the 72 cell tray for mainly tomatoes and peppers, go with the 1020 reservoir (no holes, solid bottom which holds the water for bottom water feeding). No extra middle tray is needed since the 72 cell tray already has holes, and plants can suck up the water straight from bottom 1020 tray. Hope that helps
They can be used either way. Most people use them with the inserts but its also common to use them without. You could in place just use soil or even rockwool cubes.
Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. I have all sorts of sizes sitting around and a little clarification helped.
Thanks, good explanations. I just bought a bunch of their 1020 trays and they are awesome. No more cheap brittle trays and paper cuts.
thx. was so confused.
Glad to help!
I've got the 72 version and love it. Have a 1020 going now.
Thank you for your continued support Brent. Will get you those 5x5 mesh next year!

It sounds like the pots are too dry. Give them a good watering and in 12-24 hrs gently squeeze the pot and everything should release.

Thank You! That makes sense. 😊
I am using your 32 cell tray. Can you tell me how much waters is needed to start seeds in the tray? I did wet the soil before planting seeds.
So many variables with crop, media, temp, methods etc. There just isn't a standard answer. In general keep the soil moist without over saturating.

Are the 32-cell trays meant to be seeded in directly or are they only meant to be used with the inserts?
