- A woman has died and four others have been taken to hospital following a hit-and-run collision overnight on the Gardiner Expressway.
Toronto police said they were called to the eastbound lanes of the expressway, near Jameson Avenue, shortly after 2 a.m. for a two-vehicle collision.
Toronto Paramedic Services said they transported one person to hospital in critical condition and four others with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Why not say the location 'outside' Toronto that the runner fled to? Just like DUI should be automatic jail time, the Hit-&-Run penalty, should be 'attempted murder', since the runner didn't know if they left someone for dead. Zero Care = Zero Sympathy

Yep! A woman DUI hit my car's bumper a few yrs ago & I had to chase her all over the city until police finally started listening to my "turn by turn" directions & took up the chase. I stopped behind her a couple of times when she pulled over, but never got out of my car, that'll never go my way. She went to her friends' house while I waited about 30ft away, and her friends came out, one of them got into her driver's seat, she got in the passenger seat. Just then, the police rounded the corner.
She was DUI, she hit my car, KNEW she hit my car, tried to get away, then lied to police about who was driving. I handed the officer my nano SD card (I went to high school with the cop) and he said they got her for impaired before. She was 21 & had already had a DUI. Typically, a DUI gets you $1000 fine & one night in jail, and a 1yr driving ban. She'd just come off her first driving ban.
She got a $1200 fine, another 1yr driving ban. She likely drove home from court. That's the problem with system - judges. So what if she's got a kid at home? Is that my fault? It's her second DUI in 2yrs. I can see why a judge wouldn't have her lose her job or suffer fines that make it impossible for her to provide for her kid (father, naturally, absent), but why is she banned from driving for one year? Take the bus, Gus.
2yrs ban at least is warranted - but hey, it didn't happen in the judge's neighborhood, so why should he care, right? People aren't getting the message. Like I always say, if jails are full, BUILD MORE JAILS.

@@NunchucksHabitI don't think DUIs need to be imprisoned typically (there could be exceptions). A tracking device attached to her ankle would help along with a 5 year driving ban and a lifetime ban if she drives despite a ban. At this stage, imprisonments might be necessary.

@Iamspecialk usually it's manslaughter and it doesn't carry as long a sentence as it should. 5yrs ish plus they usually count time to conviction and good behavior. So basically 2 yrs. Look at Marco Musso. He killed 3 or 4, caused life altering injuries to the one as well.
He was immediately named and is out of prison now I think he served 5 years . One of the parents committed suicide so that's another life he stole as well. Got nothing for that

Don't even put your car in gear without having a dashcam running. It could mean justice for you and others. I've had one since 2014 - I caught a DUI driver who clipped my bumper & took off, back in 2018, leading to her conviction & her insurance paying for my new bumper - and I'm still amazed that someone tried to leave the scene. If you've ever seen a Saturn try to escape a WRX, it's as boring as you'd think.
Also caught a fatal accident 3 car lengths ahead of me that proved a trucker's innocence 4yrs ago. I get invitations to his family gatherings every year since & I'll bet I'm in his will.
I know that's not all entirely on topic but I'm constantly trying to get people to adopt this basic, cheap tech. I don't sell the things, I won't recommend a brand - but for crying out loud, protect yourself at least, spend what, 80 bucks?
Camera should be mandatory in cars. They should be a built in feature in all cars now. One front facing and one rear facing.
@@stephiegetsit As long as they can't be used to incriminate you. On one of the nano-SD cards I provided police, I had footage of me doing 208km/h on a deserted road at 3am. Whether they watched that or not, I'm not sure - but I wouldn't want my footage to be used against me. The GPS on a dashcam shows your current speed - though there is some lag.
I also hit a deer 3yrs ago in Nova Scotia, I was going 78 in an 80 when it jumped in front of me, and thanks to the footage proving my speeds, my insurance company rewarded me with a no-fault claim.
I don't have a rear facing camera in my car, though my camera system came with both. I take my camera with me when I'm parked since my car was robbed before, and if I forget to take the back one out, it's ringing the dinner bell. Tesla have the right idea with integrated cameras. I've had a wire hanging from my rearview mirror to my 12V port for a decade & I don't notice it.

@@DearDesignCoach One I'm using now is a cheaper one (my expensive one got stolen) - a "Vantrue E1". It's going for $170 now, I got mine for $100 on sale. It's tiny, about the size of an engagement ring box. Brand doesn't matter as much as the frames per second. Some will advertise them as having great resolution (2k, 3k, 4k, +), which is good, but if they're not 60fps, you won't be able to make out license plates. Lower resolution with high FPS is much better than vice versa. If FPS aren't at least 60fps, don't buy it. Amazon reviews are reliable. Mine's about 2yrs old, no issues, just use a good quality nano card. Good luck!
EDIT: A Nano card of 32GB is more than enough. Just get one with good read/write speeds. I forget if one comes with it. I'd suggest disabling audio, it helps for smaller video sizes & who wants their last moments recorded singing some nasty song off key..!

I have driven through Toronto from Eastern Ontario several times a year for many years now. The last couple years I have noticed a marked increase in dangerous and stunt driving, with several near misses in just the last year. I am now driving through the states which is so much nicer
what color skin are the dangerous drivers? id bet they were 90% brown .
speeding/stunt driving aint a real problem. the problem is 3rd world trash bringing their driving habits with them, and people texting while driving... then drinking and driving for 3rd place.

I’ve seen this a few times before, even where BOTH drivers involved in a fender bender both took off, running away. In all cases they were illegal immigrants and had no insurance.

I think a relative of mine was hit by an illegal migrant who had no insurance . He gave the relative false information. While they were exchanging information he was extremely nervous. Therelative went tot the house and lo and behold no on spoke ENGLISH or FRENCH and said they did not know him.

There should be software created that alerts a motorist of their dashcam activity possibly being useful based on geopoints and direction of travel at a given time of day. Most dashcams will loop over their oldest footage, ruining possible evidence, if people aren't alerted in time or simply don't know if the footage is valuable. The quality of video is often really good, at 4k or more, often @ 60fps (in my experience - fps is more important than resolution - 2K @ 60fps is far better than 4k @ 30fps) which can be enhanced more than you might think.
Another option could be to collect all *volunteered* dashcam data to a single repo - no audio, and if desired, anonymous - only accessible by deputized, discrete resources, based on GPS/timestamp/field of view.
I know privacy laws are there for a reason, but when we consider all the unused wealth of video footage out there just getting written over, which could help someone find justice.
If this is another " person" who obtained their driver's license, on line during COVID restrictions, the blame should also be on the driving institutions that issued the license inappropriately. Too many inexperienced new drivers on highways that make even the experienced driver nerveful and cautious. I'll be curious of the outcome because this will set presindece for future vehicular homicide cases....sad to hear it cost a life....

I don’t understand leaving the scene on foot? like the vehicle you were driving is still clearly there and is a direct link to you as the driver etc. whether you borrowed the vehicle or not. the police will easily identify you.
Police can identify, but they need to prove he was the driver in moment of collision. They also need to prove he was drunk in moment of collision, not after.

This is why I have stopped driving at night unless I absolutely need to. I get that this could happen mid day but the odds are that someone driving at night under the influence of drugs or alcohol, I feel is greater. Accident happened because The elevated track lanes are too narrow , there are no shoulders, the turns are too sharp, the lane markings are probably non-existent at night during construction phases, and the speed limit through the elevated sections is too high just like on the Don Valley. Perhaps there should be a speed limit reduction after sunset at the very least.
