I was legitimately shocked to see that the SNES adapters are more or less made by hand. Very cool
How else would they made? It's by far too low volume of a product for any kind of automation to make any kind of sense.
@@HidingAllTheWay you can quite easily get quantities as low as 100 pieces with smd assembly from chinese manufacturers. But you gotta do the through hole stuff yourself
@@asronome Yeah doing that SMT stuff by hand seems ridiculous to me but I assume that somebody who knows enough to design such a board also has their reasons why they didn't outsource it. The biggest cost for a pick and place run is setup AFAIK so either it's too many different components for the size of the run or maybe they had bad experiences with the component sourcing / QA process of the PCB fab.
I'd really like to know the actual reasons.
@@HidingAllTheWay Not really. I used to work in electronics production, and the company was fine with low volume PCB orders. If you have the machinery, It doesn't really mater how many you produce, as shifting from one batch to the other only takes a few minutes

At what point do you realize you have become your own childhood hero?
This channel has come so far from when it was about repairing and reselling old iBooks. I really admire what you’ve done here!
Anybody else notice the sheer amount of work that is going into to just on of these games?
They're literally hand crafted!!
He's really going above and beyond by making the physical versions in boxes. Most developers would just put out a digital download and be done with it.
No, nobody else noticed. Just you.
@@davidandrew7314 Damn, I'm good :D
Technically, "hand-crafted" would mean manipulating the individual bits on the bare metal rather than writing code with software.
@@Galactipod Cool! Let us know when you have that done :)
Yeah, I have to admit that background is a bit garish and distracting, so I'm glad it's going away. However, I'm happy the new studio is coming together in the wake of the Big Freeze. I hope your house is well on the way as well.
But to me, the background just looks unfinished rather than distracting.

@@steve_1507 Yeah, but you would need the manual to prove it's legit.
@@eduardolarrymarinsilva76 people can just make a copy of the manual and change that one small but yet crucial thing
One of the reasons I like watching David Murray, is that he's straight forward, and any unnecessary stuff is don't exist, unlike other most of the other retro RUclipsrs that put RGB whenever they can, film themselves with the monitor in the background like "I have a splashy pc, look at me"
I know. How dare those people show off the nice things they have, and might be proud of. What nerve!
The NES adapter alone is a cool addition to the retro community, hopefully I will be adding support in a TRSE/Turbo Rascal release soon
Awesome! I only recently learned of TRSE and gave it a try on Linux yesterday: LOVE IT.
I’ve got my TRSE code working, just posted to the petscii robots group

@@WildkatPhoto I was watching Evan doorbell
Looking forward to a follow-up on that Altair you showed this week!
The red cross has done a lot of shady stuff. I remember my grandfather telling me about how they had to pay the red cross to receive their packages. He never donated a penny to them until the day he died. Wanted nothing to do with them. I also remember how they've liked to use disasters to drum up support and funds that wouldn't even go to that disaster unless you specifically marked it for that purpose. I'm not sure but I think they only changed their policy to allow even that after enough people found out about it.
They don’t own the copyright to a universal symbol designed as medical care by the United Nations.
I love the fact that instead of progressing to the 16-bit Era, David is going deeper into 8-bit land, and explores new territories.
It’s in the name.
@@Calthecool Sure. Maybe one day he decides to double the bits, but that would be another channel.
However, he started out with reviewing macbooks on this very channel, so that would not be so much of a stretch.

@@KairuHakubi Big manufacturers do have them but the small company that made those for him (Texelec) apparently does not. Honestly I'm not sure why they didn't just use through hole components instead, those can be hand soldered like the snes connector.
I had forgotten about the snes adapter til I opened my box, and I have to say I _still_ have no idea how you bundled that thing in at such a cheap price! also I find it hilarious that you needed an snes controller adapter and since they didn't exist you had one made! lol so cool!
Even cooler that the various incompatible Commodore User Ports have JUST BARELY ENOUGH overlap in GPIO to make it possible to bundle a single one in with just a jumper to move.
That's what you get where competence and decency overlap.

Not going to lie, that Apple IIGS version literally made me whistle in amazement at how colorful and detailed it is. Not to knock the other versions because of better hardware but hot damn! You could easily release that version to the mainstream and have it sell like hotcakes!
(Side note, is it bad that I KIND of like the Mocking Board music more than the SID music? Kind of sound more like a fusion of The Sega Master System and an Adlib.)
It's actually pretty close to the SMS sound hardware.
I’ve always felt the SID has a really harsh and unpleasant sound with those sawtooth waves, the AY3 version sounds a lot better, but then even the PSG in the Tandy and SMS or the NES’s 2A03 all sound a lot more pleasant.
The amount of focus and time management skill this guy has is on a whole other level. I wish I had a quarter of his focus. Great job on these behind the scenes videos. Definitely my favorite kind.

my first reaction about the background was “that’s cool!”... well not really but it’s an English approximation to my Spanish thoughts haha
I kind of figured David had a larger plan for that. He's been doing this too long to think dazzle paint looks good in a studio. I'm curious to see what the final product looks like.
I cannot convey in a single comment how many things this video has made "click" in my head regarding computer science. Things like the interrupt signal, how the mockingboard works, the different pixel mechanisms between Commodore and Apple machines.... the list goes on. Thanks David!
Always look forward to watching these videos on your game making process.
I can't wait to try the Apple version! I've had two Apple II machines donated to me that I've gotten almost no mileage out of and this game might change it. I may have to pick up a Mockingboard while I'm at it too.
Oh yeah, and for anyone reading and wondering if this game is any good -- I've played the entire C64 version and loved it. Give it a try!
You had two donated to you? Man, that's lucky. I've kept an eye out for one at yard sales and thrift stores and never have found one.
Might just have to bite the bullet and hit up eBay for one someday.
@@ohnoitschris I'm more partial to the ][GS but I love all the revisions Apple ][ went through
@@ohnoitschris I did! A coworker of mine who was retiring had them in his attic (alongside an Atari 400 and a 2600) that he didn't want anymore, and offered them up to me. I even said several times I was willing to pay at least some sum for them but he insisted on letting me have them at no cost. It was super nice of him!
Sadly, one of the two (an Apple II Plus) isn't in proper working order, at some point I want to try and commit to restoring it, but the other one (a IIe) is working great!
@@MrEightThreeOne The IIe is an incredibly reliable machine. The original II and II+ less so, but they're usually easy to repair as they mostly use easily sourced components (74xx series logic chips, DRAM, and the 6502) with only the keyboard and keyboard encoder being a bit hard to source
@@tim1724 My II+ has two major problems. First, when starting the machine, it initially appears to boot just fine, but there are random "0" characters scattered around the screen (the screen mostly looks fine, they just are sporadically littered around). The other problem is the keyboard, which is in absolutely horrid shape -- many keys have double-strike issues and some plainly don't work at all. I've poured alchohol into some of the faulty keys but they're still not super reliable. I assume the former problem is probably a faulty chip somewhere on the motherboard but I wouldn't know which one. The latter problem is probably going to be a lot harder to diagnose.

3:00 About the red cross, I totally agree. When I was growing up, I played games like Wolf3D, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D and even Half-Life and at the time, the red cross was used on pretty much every first aid kit available in both video games AND real life. So whenever *I* see a red cross, I *immediately* think about health and aid. For example, if there was ever a major disaster in my area and a truck was parked up with a big red cross on it, I'd RUN after it! Kids growing up nowadays have no idea what that logo even means, unless theyve been specifically taught, and I've met some kids who describe it as just "a red plus sign" and don't know what it stands for. When I was 7 I recognized what it was. Now I see blue and green crosses and ive heard even the bloody STAR OF LIFE (the blue asteric with the snake coiling around it which represents EMS) is having problems too! When I see that old image of your medkit with the red cross on it, I know it means health immediately and should save it for when I'm hurt in the game. The red "H" version doesn't have nearly the same reaction and I might not even know what it does if no description or manual was available, but the white box is kind of a giveaway. This ENTIRE thing is BS and has to do with, what else but, MONEY! It has nothing to do with "diluting the image" but simply because Red Cross has copywritten the red cross as their official business logo. BS!!!
Your opinion is worthless!
it wasn't copyrightable/trademarkable in the first place. it goes to 1864 and is the inverted swiss flag.
