Scotty Kilmer hey Scotty my cars cooling fan stopped coming on and when it stopped, my AC button doesn't work now either, what could I narrow it down too
Scotty Kilmer Is it safe 2drive 1995 Honda Accord w/o an thermostat!??? My mechanic said it's a reason why Honda's don't keep thermostats in them b/c they gets stuck easily...
I had an old K car that overheated on me one day on a rural road. Same thing, the thermostat broke in half. In my case, the bottom half fell down and blocked the coolant flow. After looking under the hood for obvious problems. I looked up to find two deer standing right next to me, like they were concerned. I guess they were just attracted to the sweet smell of the antifreeze. As neither one offered to help.
They were reindeer they only understand being hooked to a sleigh. I think this is really cool though because the closest I've ever been to a deer was about 20 ft because he was looking the other way.
I am so grateful for Scotty and his videos. I've been wanting to learn how to fix my own cars (I'm a 23 year old woman) and your videos have really helped me be more independent with that!! Thanks a lot. You're a blessing to this world!
I saw that this post was three years old but I hope you are still out there learning. Working on cars is kind of a pain in the butt but never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. I am amazed at what people can learn from just a few min on RUclips. Good luck out there.
My daughter has a 1991 Toyota Camry. I thought it was the thermostat, from what I read on the internet. I have watched a couple videos, but yours was the only one that mentioned the reservoir to catch the coolant. Very glad to have watched your video as a lot of the coolant came out. The local shop told me the price to change it would be $175-200. The part cost me $10 and about 30 minutes(mostly trying to gain access to the bolts). New thermostat in, took it for a 30 minute drive and no issues. I appreciate you posting this and thank you. Have a great day!!
So thankful for you, Scotty! I'm 25 (about to turn 26) and know nothing about cars; I replaced my thermostat for my 2011 Dodge Caliber Mainstreet in no time at all and my A/C runs better already! You just gained a new subscriber!

Robert Gross oh yeah I forgot to mention that part lol. I probably need to change mine too. Bad part is I would literally need a whole day to do it myself. (Can't spend nearly that much having someone else do it). It's too bad the pump is in such a terrible spot deep in the engine and all
Thank you Scotty! I didn’t know where the thermostat was located and an employee from autozone told me it was somewhere different. Without your video I would’ve spent hours trying to find it.
Thank you Scotty!!! I had a strong feeling it was the thermostat and now I know for sure since it's throwing that code and takes forever to warm up...you are helping so many!!! Gratitude 🙏🏼
Scotty, you're the best. I always learn from you and you always have helped me save a lot of money. Your intros and closings are always fun to watch. God Bless.😊👍🏼
Thanks Scotty!! The last time I changed a thermostat was over 20 years ago on my '77MGB. It was even easier on my "new" '99 Celica GT thanks to your video!
You forgot to mention that on some newer engines there is a 'bleeder screw' like on the brake system which has to be 'bled' to let the antifreeze come up and out of the manifold (and release all the air) .. otherwise the engine could overheat since there is no way for the air to come out and fluid to replace it completely.
This video was incredibly helpful great directions and camera work to help make it clear. I have several 70s and 80s Oldsmobiles so id love to learn as much as I can, please continue to make these videos for little repairs like this this is fantastic and simple; if you can do one for flushing the radiator it would be great either by a garden hose through the radiator (taking the radiator hose and thermostat off first though of course) or whatever your technique would be.. whatever little repairs you can think of please keep creating content, you’re a great teacher, thanks again.
When you're a mechanic getting paid by hourly, your boss will always tell you to reuse coolant so the company doesn't have to use fresh coolant that they bought into the engine unless they have to so they don't waste money. It's business, can't make money if you're spending money
It's O.K. to reuse, unless it has been in the system a long time. However, he should show that if you do you should also strain it through Muslim cloth before pouring it back into the system.
Scotty, You are hilarious. Thank you for all the videos. I have been a fan for some time now. I actually will be in the Houston area for a few months next month. This video not only is helping me replace the thermostat but C O I N C I D E N T A L L Y I have a Toyota Sequoia that this video showcases. I have a leak that I seem to have traced right to the spot you point to @ 1:09. It is on the underside of that joint. I am heading to the Stealership right meow for the parts, I shopped online like you and they to my surprise have comparable prices and the timing works out better for immediate fulfillment. Thanks again for everything you post.
Helpful video. I have a 30 year old Honda CN250 scooter, and I think it might have the thermostat stuck open, as the engine seems to take a long time to reach proper operating temperature.
In our Dodge Ram the thermostat sits vertical and I removed the radiator hose and there are chunks of crud sitting on top of the thermostat and it looks like some crud is keeping it slightly open. Tomorrow I am going to see if I can get the crud out and get it to close or replace it. Thanks for your videos. I get really nervous trying to fix vehicles.
Thank you Mr Scotty for the video ! SOS, a very important question: the thermostat has a rod in the centre, in my friends car that ''axon'' broke due to a thermostat failure but never manage to recover it is lost somewhere in the circuit but can be inside the channel of the radiator? can cause overheating or a problem to the car's water pump some day? Is there a way to throw it out from the system?

Have a question scotty my ford explorer 2006 v8 gets overheat fan clutch makes noise like airplain and heater does not blow hot air i replace thermostat and fan clutch and still doing the same .. what can i do...?
Wow Scotty you really know your stuff..... the fine details! Seen a few videos where they install the thermostat upside down(the little valve facing at 6 o'clock) where as you mention upright like at 12 o'clock.👍
thermostat is usually one of the easiest parts on a car to replace, and this video keeps it simple. but a few cars the thermostat is in a weird or difficult position to access and it might be worth paying a professional to do it
After 24 years on my 2000 Honda Accord ex 3.0L v6, I'm replacing the original thermostat. It is sticking closed causing extreme overheating. I know what to do and got everything I'm just getting your take on it.
Got the same issue - thermostat is stuck open. I've got a new replacement part but I've been procrastinating because on my car it will be a bear to get off.
Thank you very much Scotty. I learned from you to get all of the air out of the coolant system and what direction to put the thermostat in. Thank you so much. You helped to save my engine!!! I really appreciate your help!!!
Three months ago I had a new AC compressor installed in my 2007 Ford Escape. The diagnosis was exactly as you read on the OTC monitor, and engine light is on. Could the thermostat have not been checked or toggle switch placed incorrectly when AC compressor was installed? Thank You for this video!!
You do that to get air out of the system while slowly adding coolant as needed. Once you see coolant spitting out, turn engine off and watch it settle down. Then top off as needed
Scotty, on a 2000 Subaru Outback 2.5 , i removed the thermostat , because it runs hot, , BUT it still runs hot even without a thermostat , I'm lost here, its losing water an running hot, no external leaks, cooling fan comes on when suppose to, why is it still running hot without a stat ? what can i try to do to fix this car ? please let me know , thanks scotty, i enjoy your videos each week, look forward to them
A mechanic replaced my engine a few months ago and he told me he took off the thermostat since it makes the car overheat (a ‘98 Firebird) and ever since my car doesn’t have a thermostat the car has the temp. gauge all the way to the Hot part and it kinda turns off on the first start of the day if you don’t let it warm up enough time. I’m going to the parts store to see if putting a thermostat solves the problem.
Yesterday my car started overheating when I left my house so I pulled over and turned it off. When I started it up again it didn't overheat anymore the rest of the day. But last night when I started the car, within a couple minutes the temperature gauge went all the way to red but only cold air was coming out of the vents. Cause I would turn on the heater full blast to take away stress and heat from the engine. I pulled over to check out the engine but it wasn't even hot. It was barely even warming up. I kept turning the car on and off until eventually the gauge stopped moving to the red mark and the heater started working. Any idea what it could be? Thermostat?
Hi Scotty: my engine was running cold, no heater, suspected thermostat stuck open. But upon removing, thermostat was disintegrated JUST LIKE YOURS in this video - half of the housing only. Unfortunately, I could not find any other metal pieces floating around anywhere. Where the hell did it go and how do I fish it out??? '09 Jetta 2.5L engine.
Do you also need to put some silicon or gasket in between the metal connections, where the bolts are tightened? Or just tightening the bolts is enough?
On the Toyota 3.4 V6 (5VZ-FE), the jiggle valve of an OEM thermostat has to be at the 6 o'clock position. Keeps the engine running cooler for some reason. It's all over Toyota forums. I just replaced an aftermarket one in mine with OEM, jiggle valve at 6 o'clock, and coolant is over 10 degrees cooler.
Now,on my 2005 Ford explorer ,has no radiator cap, just a reservoir tank. Can this tank be used as an air "Purging"for trapped air? After thermostat // fluid replaced?
How do I know when to stop pouring the anti freeze in? You said to pour it in until the engine is warmed up... but how can I tell when the engine is warmed up?? Sorry if this is a stupid question but it is a genuine one
Thanks Scotty that info given about the toggle switch was very important to this job. I was afraid that I was going to mess it up as I've done in the pass...broke a few covers by putting it in wrong.😂😅❤
I also like to add a thin layer of shellac on the rubber gasket on the t-stat or on the housing itself where it mates up against the engine. A little bit of added insurance.
Would removing the thermostat help a car with heat problems? The problem is when it gets too hot in the middle of summer it drops all its oil, I've switched to a thicker oil and opened up as much airflow as I could to the radiator. My mechanic tells me it's a small leak somewhere in the engine, we've agreed that we're just keeping it running as long as we can. Spark plugs are always dry, no drips or puddles underneath the car. '95 Mazda 323 astina sedan
Scotty, I have to replace my thermostat which I know I can do. My question is how important is it that I get matching coolant to top off what I lose when unbolting the housing and the coolant hose? I am not sure what brand or type of coolant I have in there now.
Should I do a flush after fixing the thermostat? Replace hoses? The video was great - it helped me fix my 2000 Accord i4 SE. It was overheating badly - the engine would come up to temp and stay there for a minute or so and then it would literally shoot up to and past the H. Turning on the heater in the car did nothing - no heat came out, so I knew something was keeping the coolant from flowing. In the process of troubleshooting, the engine overheated 5 or 6 times, so I am worried about damage to hoses but more importantly to the engine. No blue smoke or idle problems so far but I am wondering if I should do a major radiator/engine flush and which hoses I should replace. Any advice would be appreciated.
Just replacing the failing alternator on my wife's E150. As long as I'm there, 201,000 miles seems like a good time to swap in a new thermostat right? Will probably do new hoses too. Is there any advantage to installing a 180° or is it best to just go for the stock 195° ??
Love your vids scotty. One quick observation. The hose you pulled to access the thermostat housing contained red-ish coolant (which was poured back into the system). At the burping scene, I see green coolant going into the radiator. Is it safe to assume that coolant varieties are a bunch of bull?
I know this is a late reply being four years ago, but some coolants can't be mixed. My parents had a Chrysler Town and Country years ago that ended up with the recommended fluid being mixed with another color, and it turned into essentially muddy sludge. They had to replace the radiator as a result of it.
Hopefully I can get an answer asap But I took mine off and noticed a hole in it but the new one doesnt is that good or bad it's a 2006 chevy trailblazer 4.2l v6

Good tip scotty! its also a good time of year to flush your coolant system if you haven't done it in ages.
Do you also need to put some silicon or gasket in between the metal connections, where the bolts are tightened? Or just tightening the bolts is enough?
Absolutely one of my favorites
Thanks Scotty this video helped me get my friends Toyota pickup to stop overheating!
Hey Scotty,
Why can't they put those defrost lines in the front windshield,as well as in the back?
Scotty is that GM coolant your poring into a Toyota Sequoia?
A little bit of added insurance.
is it really important to point the toggle switch to the top of the engine?
Scotty I have a 2008 Malibu today the temp gauge moved from normal temp to middle of gauge should I be concerned ? Car never over heated.

Scotty, I have to replace my thermostat which I know I can do. My question is how important is it that I get matching coolant to top off what I lose when unbolting the housing and the coolant hose? I am not sure what brand or type of coolant I have in there now.
Thank you so much Scotty. We love you and your informative videos.
+Stan Ollie thanks for the support👍
My temperature gauge is fluctuating up and down at highway speeds? Can you help me out Scotty? Please?
+Chris S if coolant is more than 3 years old, flush it out.
while the coolant is out it is recommended to replaces hoses if you are over the 120k mls mark.
Thanks dude, you're the man.
He makes me think of a hyper Brit rocker, like Kim Simmons of Savoy Brown on speed, doing the mechanic thing .. :-D
What would the recommended intervals for changing a thermostat? or to just wait till it fails.
SCOTTY!! Do i need to put a new gasket on the housing and rtv around the thermostat?
why did you add more coolant if you poured back all of the original? and how do you know how much to pour?
+Aurelius you put s much as the system can take when it's full with no air in it, or when the reservoir is at the MAX level line
Hopefully I can get an answer asap
But I took mine off and noticed a hole in it but the new one doesnt is that good or bad it's a 2006 chevy trailblazer 4.2l v6
