What gets me about this title change, although I’m disappointed that Sammy’s reign kinda felt like it just had the rug abruptly yanked from under him, is how the Rhodes family including Dustin is treating this like it’s a feel good moment for the fans. Like it actually got me to laugh, they really are going all in (unintended wordplay) with the heel in denial angle.
Well honestly, yanking the rug out from under Sammy makes the delusional heel thing work better; if Sammy had "had a good run with the belt" before dropping it to Cody (or anyone else for that matter) it wouldn't generate the same heat. And honestly, they didn't really book Sammy's run the best; he lost most of his momentum by getting caught up in the Inner Circle's feud with the Men of the Year and American Top Team rather than going straight into a proper singles feud of his own and most of his opponents were just open challenges that stepped up like Bobby Fish or Jay Lethal, which leads to great _matches_ but not a great reign. Losing the belt to Cody is arguably the best thing that could have happened to Sammy because now people are all wishing he could have retained, despite the prior perception that his run was underwhelming. Remember; the babyface is the one that gives the fans what they want, the heel is the one that takes it away, even if he _thinks_ he's the babyface.
Brandy is openly a heel. Arn was talking about shooting people. The Gunn Club (still members of the Nightmare Family?) turned heel. It's starting to look like Cody's descent was heralded by everyone around him.
Cody's character is something else. In Cody's eyes he's a hero but fan's eyes he is villain. By defeated Sammy and winning TNT Championship for 3 times. He's thinking, this is the way I can restore my respect/Power with the fans. So his storyline build up over time. The promise of never winning AEW Championship. So I would love to see that he admitted, he was a heel all this time. So Cody should keep building his character up as confused hero only to find out he was a villain all this time by giving the crowd an evil smile.
I'm glad he won because as much as I like Sammy, he didn't really do anything with the belt like anyone previous, he just kinda had it, didn't really fit right. I think Cody could have some good feuds coming up and when he finally hits that pedigree it's gonna be beautiful

The Crockett and The Rhodes families go way back. Is nice to see that moment between Mr. Crockett and Cody Rhodes. If Heel Cody is coming, then this is the perfect time to capitalise on.
The circle will be completed when Cody Rhodes officially turns heel. Otherwise there was really no reason why Sammy Guevara's TNT Championship ended this way. Miro getting the title back from Sammy honestly would've been a lot more ideal.

Nah, that full turn has to hold off until he challenges for the AEW World Title and goes back on his promise. They could be setting up a title swapping feud though as well. They weren't doing anything with Sammy. Have him and Cody run a 3 match program. Let Sammy win it back at Revolution then defend and win at the first TNT special. Puts both guys over and gets the belt back into things. This is why you make sure titles are worth something, so they can be used to elevate things.
It's the only thing i think AEW is doing wrong. It saddens me the amount of people who are getting their hopes up and thinking Cody's actions are deliberate on route to being a heel. I think the guy's out of touch, a total narc and will continue to be a face. As he's a narc, he's probably one of these creative people probably believes his decision the way his character is going outweighs what the fans want. There's going to be a lot of dissapointed people out there i feel.
He had great matches but he never had a proper feud for the title. Closest was the build-up to Inner Circle vs ATT and in that feud he really felt like he was in the background.
Seeing the guy who owned the company that Cody's dad booked himself to be champion in hand over the belt is some really deep symbolism. His dad was judged negatively for booking himself to be champion in J.C.P. ,and Cody referenced it before his title match with Jericho. He's let his wife get hit by attacks, and he has been too arrogant in the ring against smaller opponents. Typical heel stuff. But then you add in the things that used to be Babyface tropes, the "I'm injured partway through the match, so I leave and come back later to try and win" in the ladder match, ending feuds with the final victory against opponents who dominated them before is another classic Babyface move, but Cody does it against people who he is on the same level of in addition to monsters. Hell, even his "America is the greatest!" ideologies in promos is taking a classic pro wrestling good guy trope and applying it in a tone deaf way to make you feel like he is being insincere and therefore you don't think you can trust him. It is a very deep, and very well planned villain who thinks they're a hero storyline. The clues have always been there, we just ignored them because we wanted him to be the hero of the story.

@@InvisibleHotdog How so?

When they say wrestling is storytelling... you can feel all the pieces coming together Cody's heel run in AEW might top his heel run in ROH.
And when it finally happens
It will be a spectacle 🤯
Thank you to Cody and Sammy for a great and incredible match. Merry Christmas to you both and congrats to Cody on being the new Champion.
