Ah, the Dutilleux Piano Sonata. The greatest piano sonata of the 20th cent., and the greatest French piano sonata ever written. The Dukas is good, but so prolix, and so eager to demonstrate his knowledge of counterpoint, cyclical form, and the style of the last sonatas of Beethoven. With the D'Indy, I wait in vain for something individually melodic, as I do in his other compositions. These guys were tring so hard to sound profound, that they over-shot the runway. Dutilleux is concise, and full of melodies that recur in subtle ways, on repetition emerging gradually from the texture.
