some trivia about cinematagraphy for u guys 👀:
    • RM reads a paragraph of "Demian" by Herman Hesse at 2:30 in the music video. And at the very beginning, RM is shown reading "Demian" by Herman Hesse.
    • At the beginning of the video, Jin looks at a painting titled The Fall of the Rebel Angels by Pieter Bruegel.
    • When Jungkook is dangling on the swing in the MV 0:20, the painting behind him is called The Lament of Icarus by Herbert James Draper.
    • In J-Hope' solo scene in the MV, he is standing behind Michelangelo’s Pieta.
    • When V is sitting on the ledge of the balcony in the MV, in front of him is the painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, also by Bruegel.
    • Tha table part: Apples are a sign of temptation and sin (apples are also mentioned in Demian). And on each plate, we see that each member has a chalice and an apple. All these things right in front of them are “tempting” them to sin.

Actually right before this BS&T MV, they had a short film released every week(for each member) back in 2016. It’s BU related but it’s also like a small intro to their solo songs back then. Every short film, RM will read a related quote from the book “Demian”. So for your info, the short films are begin(jk), lie(jimin), stigma(v), first love(suga), reflection(rm), mama(jhope) and awake(jin).
Also for this album, the intro song “boy meets evil “also related to it. It’s jhope’s solo and he shows such a powerful dancing skill in this mv.

I WANTED THIS FOR SO LONGGGGG.
This mv concept is based in the book "Demian" by Hermann Hesse. This was the concept and album that made BTS win big awards!
The thing RM says it's from the book. In the book Sinclair, the main character says there are two worlds: the light and the dark world. The light world is his family, his home. The dark world it's the outside.
In the mv you can see the dark and light statues and doors. Jin is Sinclair, the fase he's innocent, you can see in his expression in the book he grow up in tentation because this outside world, his friends (like the guy that play organ aka Suga) etc. Demian is a guy that talks about the evil in the world and they bump into each other in some parts. Demian talks about things that going to be important to Sinclair.
In the end, Sinclair is hurt and see an angel of black wings that kiss him. Like Jin, he felt for a fallen angel, he's innocence is cracking (his face).
I dont think this video is SO MUCH about the BU. If you wanna see it, react to "I Need You", that's pure BU and it's the first that shows the story line. In this mv you can know the main plot of the BU (then watch Blood, Sweet and Tears japanese version and Run from 2015)

  • @alex__andrei
    @alex__andrei Год назад +198

Okay, so this is gonna be a long comment so bear with me!
“Blood Sweat & Tears” is the title track of one of their albums called “WINGS” (2016). This particular song and entire album uses a plethora of references that link to one book: “Demian” by german writer Hermann Hesse. This book tells the story of a young boy named Emil Sinclair and his childhood growing up during pre-World War I. He struggles to find his new self-knowledge in the immoral world and is caught between good and evil. Already we have some clues as to what this song/MV is about: the battle between good and evil and temptation.
The video opens up with the members in a museum; notice how Jin, the oldest, stands alone. He is gazing at the painting called “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. (good angels fighting Lucifer/evil angels fallen from Heaven). He is about to beggin his journey towards finding his true self and identity. On the left&right, there is a white and a black door, which represent the paths Jin can go on: the good side and the evil side.
Now, If you notice, Jungkook is the one on the swing, and behind him is the painting called “The Lament for Icarus” by Herbert James Draper. Jungkook is representing Icarus troughout the whole video. (V also represents Icarus but in a different form). The swing could represent Icarus being safe, the Icarus following orders (he is supported by a swing). Later we see a drop of wax dripping on JK’s finger which he then puts in his mouth (temptation). This is a representation of the fall of Icarus and foreshadows what will happen to him later in the video. The painting in the back also foreshadows his death. (more about this below)
V is the one falling from the balcony, representing Icarus but also a fallen angel (this scene can also symbolize the fall of Lucifer: he rebelled against God and fell from grace, tempting more angels to do so in the process, thus connecting to the painting at the beggining “The Fall of the Rebel Angels”, maybe this is why he smirks after he falls down the balcony). Behind him we see the painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. This scene represents the death of Icarus (he ignored his father’s warning about flying too close to the sun, until the wax that kept his wings attached to his body melted…and he falls to his death-again we have the theme of temptation-Icarus falling to temptation). But…at 0:49 we see Jungkook again, but this time he is floating. He in this scene is dead, and him floating represents how Icarus started “floating” in the water after he drowned, connecting V’s and JK’s scenes. We also see feathers floating around and on the floor as well (being underwater). So the whole Icarus imagery in this MV comes in like this: stage 1: We see JK on the swing, Icarus being alive; stage 2: V/Icarus falls off the balcony; stage 3: The painting in the background (“Landscape with the Fall of Icarus”) foreshadows JK/Icarus when he is floating/drowned (him being dead/underwater); stage 3: the painting behind JK (“The Lament for Icarus”) foreshadows V/Icarus having no wings on anymore which is the final stage.
Now, the kissing scene. (BTW, RM is reading a paragraph from “Demian” at 2:33, if you didn’t read the book, you will not get it sadly) During the interlude of the MV, all the members run towards the exit except for Jin and V. If you notice, Jin has a very confused and scared look on his face while V blindfolds him. After that a white statue with black wings appears: this statue represents the god Abraxas-the deity is a representation of good and evil, it is not good or evil, it is both (good and evil into the same word). After that, Jin walks closer to it, takes a look at it then kisses it. This scene represents how Jin has finally embraced both good and evil into himself (by kissing Abraxas), thus destroying the world of innocence he has lived in prior to this. We then see V with his wings cut off, giving a smile to the camera (him smiling could symbolize that Jin’s growth is complete, and he finally accepted chaos into himself which leads to self betterment-theory of Carl Jung: accepting your shadow). Again, Icarus but also a fallen angel. So this whole MV is revolving around Jin most of the time, he is the main protagonist of this MV (and the BU) (his path to adulthood, maturity and acceptance of an evil realm). The quote above the mirror at 6:19 is written in German (belonging to philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche) and translates as: You need to have chaos in yourself in order to give birth to a dancing star” basically meaning that if you don’t accept chaos (evil) into yourself, you will not be able to grow to your full potential. At the end of the MV we see the old version of Jin, the one that was pure and innocent cracking, there is no chaos in him and so he cannot give birth to the dancing star.
There is so much I didn’t say here, you’ll have to watch the explanation on RUclips to trully understand how everything connects because trust me, this whole thing is cohesive and connects, I just told you the main things of this MV but not specifically how everything connects!

Without spoiling the BU I'll explain some things that are solely from this music video.
You guys understand the concept of temptation through this video. But it's more then temptation, its sin and the transition between a child and an adult.
The Music Videos for BTS, Even the ones that are BU have a separate story that is only for the album they are on. Like Fake Love, that is a BU video, but there are aspects that only inform its place on the Love Yourself Album trilogy, being on Love Yourself: Tear.
The same thing goes for Blood Sweat and Tears.
Wings as an album is based off Herman Hesse novel "Damien" which follows the protagonist of the story as he grows from a child into an adult. The spoken word in the middle of the song is a passage from that story.
The thesis of the story is, you have to be tempted, and to commit sins, in order to grow into an adult. Your perspective has to change on what good and evil is and at the end you will realise you are neither good nor evil. You are Abraxis.

Haahah honestly, trying to understand the MV without knowing a bit about the BU makes it even more harder XD. The whole theme and storyline of the MV is bassed on a novel titled "Demian" by Hermen Hesse. "Temptation" and "growth" are definitely the key idea here. I suggest you look up an "Blood,Sweat and Tears" explained video since I feel like the visual aid will help you understand it better and much more easily. But yeah, enjoying their MVs face value itself is fun, but diving into it is a whole other level of entertainment.

As a 6 -month-old ARMY the BU that I've tried getting into it's REALLYYY complicated. I know the basic story and the main theme of it but some of the details of the mv's are really hard to connect with the the main story. However it's a really fascinating one that's really deep, sad and heartbreak yet really beautiful. This mv of BS&T is truly a piece of art, a masterpiece, so watching it without really understanding much is really pleasing because it all has the same vibe throughout the video, which is what makes their BU mvs so special because even though the connect to a story they can still be enjoyed separately.
edit: 2016 and BS&T are the era that started to ACTUALLY making them rise and blow up worldwide. 2016 was also the year they won their first daesang which is such a fundamental achievement for them!

The kiss is very important in this video. At the beginning you'll notice Jin is staring at a painting, it is called 'The Fall of the Rebel Angels'. which hangs between a white door and a black door. Good or Evil. Which will Jin choose? There are a lot of easter eggs in this mv, so without giving to much away about everything else, Jin did give in and lost his innocence, that's why his face cracked, he wasn't pure anymore.💜💜💜💜

This was my first video I saw of BTS! Actually, it was a lot of ARMYS fist video. While "I Need You" and "Run" were huge milestones in BTS's transition, like the first turn in their sound and popularity, Blood Sweat & Tears was the BIG JUMP. The WINGS album was the HUGE in comparison. This is where a lot of record setting really started. It gained 6 Mil views in 24hrs which was a leap and a first for ANY "kpop" group. This reached a global audience on a scale that their previous stuff had just not quiet done yet. Actually, the album right before (Young Forever) this that had songs like Fire and Save Me, won them their first ever Major award at Korean music award shows, Album of the Year. (Though there was some confusion that it was WINGS it was actually Young Forever). Anyway, this music video and album (WINGS & BST) are just EXTRA iconic in ARMYland. Spring Day & BST are probably the two "Queens" lol, there is just something extra meaningful about them and the time they were created and the impact they had on BTS journey.

I'm a theory ARMY. Deep into the BU. But I've always been into lore so I really connected to the intricacy and medium of this universe. It's so complex and you have to dig for some of it because they put the story in unexpected places (random twitter accounts that pop up, they had a physical flower shop pop up in Korea that was part of the universe, live performances, merch notes...it's everywhere) and then it's told in different eras with different styles (like the HYYH and Love Yourself eras advanced the narrative literally where the Wings era and the Map of the Soul Era explored the themes with surrealism and metaphor) so it's like a big puzzle that you have to piece together with a lot of outside research and a lot of different approaches. The payoff is massive though. It is WORTH the work to get into it. It's a beautiful and interesting story and the BU content outside of MV is beautiful (the Wings short films, the BTS World game trailer, the LY Highlight reels, the Save Me webtoon, the lyric books and notes...it's all gorgeous, artful content). BUT that being said, BTS' music is so genius because you get a song like Blood, Sweat, and Tears or Fake Love or Boy With Luv and you can enjoy it on so many different levels. You can enjoy it on the surface for what it is--a great song with a great dance and beautiful visuals! Or you can dig deeper and enjoy the substantive message of the song in a vacuum (Blood, Sweat, and Tears talks about temptation for example and has a lot of biblical imagery and art references and a quote from Demian that all connect to frame that story of temptation). Or you can watch it as part of the BU and see it through the lens of the boys as their fictional characters and try to understand how it moves the narrative forward. That's part of why their music has staying power. It has so many layers with which you can engage.

i think the complexities of bts's contents like their music videos and their lyrics ties in to their art being open to interpretation. bts members themselves have always stated that once they released something to the public is basically not theirs anymore but is rather an art for everyone to sort of own and have a piece of it for themselves for what it could mean to them

BST is the song which BTS got the big Commercial Hit as a K-pop group. Big budgets, artistic set, and etc. and their own unique concept and Captivating song, Melody and Singing ❤
I know others won’t mention this, so I have to stand up for JIMIN once again. JIMIN CAME UP WITH THE MELODY FOR BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS. He opened the song. And every Vocal if u notice are singing like JIMIN in this. Sounding like him and keeping his tone of vocal. And that is the thing captivated everyone along with the visuals and concept of the song when it released.
And Jimin’s opening Went viral and Iconic in K-pop History ❤️‍🔥 And the choreography of the song.
So the song is basically about the boys coming of age, loosing their innocence and giving themselves to temptations… simply means they ain’t teenagers anymore with their songs, concepts and choreography. So the song was the turning point of BTS as a group into coming of age. Not as individuals but as a group. The BU concepts or the songs concepts have nothing to do with the boys as individuals in their real life it’s just a song making concepts story made for series of albums. That’s all.
And 2016 is the year when BTS won their 1st Main award in a Music award show ( MAMA ) with their wings album. And BST is the main song of the album. So it has many significances like that in BTS history and army history.

I actually enjoy the full reaction even this one were they're lost for words cuz they can't really describe what they just saw. But they're pretty much chose on their remarks. Anyway,, we all know the obvious that it's all about temptation and how we end up giving in to it or struggle to give in to any temptation especially when we aspire to achieve something grand. In this video the title itself explains that they're willing to pour in their blood, sweat and tears because they can't resist the temptation. That temptation is their love for music. They sacrifice a lot due to their love and passion to their music.

    BLOOD SWEAT and TEARS:
The song is based on the book “DEMIAN” by Hermann Hesse which focuses on a young man who vacillates between light / dark, good/ evil and the people who mentor him.
    You will notice that:
    JIN
*Jin Does NOT SING at all in this song! (Jin literally has no verses ….)
*Jin is the protagonist in BTS storyline and is the subject being tempted in the MV
    BTS
*All remaining 6 members and paired up; 1 older member “mentoring” 1 younger member (RM with JK, Suga with Jimin, Jhope with V)
What got me was the religious references and greek mythology that I find interesting (and my comments focus solely on that):
THE PAINTINGS Pt 1: THE FALL OF THE REBEL ANGELS
*Jin is staring at the painting called THE FALL OF THE REBEL ANGELS in which heavenly angels are fighting fallen angels (demons) for the souls of man
*Jin stands between two doors one “light” the other “dark” depicting the choices he can make (good or evil)
    DARK STATUE
*One of the “dark statues” (seen when Jin is looking at the painting) is “PERSEUS Holding the Head of MEDUSA”
“LA PIETA” Statue of the Virgin Mary and Crucified Christ by Michelangelo
JHOPE who is seated in water (water is symbolic of the Holy Spirit) in front of the statue “LA PIETA” by Michelangelo, in which is the Virgin Mary is holding a Crucified Christ who just died for the very sins / temptation BTS are alluding to in the song. The face of the Virgin Mary explodes near the end of this song signifying Jin’s choice of evil over good.
When Jhope shoot the arrow at V it allude to scripture:
Psalms 58:7 “Let them flow away like water that run off, when he aims his arrow let them be like headless shafts”.
Psalms 12:21 “You will put them to flight, you will aim at their faces with your bow”
Jhope literally shoot the arrow at V face which then multiple colors splatter over it.
    THE DINNER TABLE
Abby said it reminder her of Alice in Wonderland but it is actually a take on the painting of “CHRIST AND THE LAST SUPPER”. However, THIS meal consists of a single “apple” (temptation) of which each member has on his plate.
    THE DOOR OF LIGHT
ALL the member eventually chooses to go through the door with a blinding light coming from it EXCEPT Jin and V. Jin turns to the dark winged statue (fallen angel) and V covers his eyes to blind him of the truth.
    V SCARRED BACK
V represent Lucifer and his wings are attached to the statue that JIN has “Kissed” thus, JIN has turned to take in the temptation and the sin that follows
    JIMIN
Jimin has a blindfold on, and some say it's to cover his eyes from religion / truth. Notice how he is tied to a door of which he can't escape symbolizing a form of bondage to sin.
    SUGA and JIMIN
Sit on a glass floor with Jimin holding his “apple” while Suga holds the “blindfold” to shield him from the truth
THE PAINTINGS PT 2: THE LANDSCAPE OF THE FALL OF ICARUS
V Jumps from the balcony into the painting THE LANDSCAPE OF THE FALL OF ICARUS. In the actual painting you can see the feet of Icarus sticking out of the water as he goes under. The difference between V and JK is that V is willing to “fall” thus is his role and the fallen angel Lucifer tempting Jin to sin.
THE PAINTINGS PT 3: THE LAMENT OF ICARUS
Notice the painting behind JK as he is suspended in air is that of THE LAMENT OF ICARUS and shows Icarus falling to his death. It alludes to JK’s innocent and naivety and eventual downfall. In the Japanese version of this song, RM literally gives JK a “controlled substance to drink”.
JIN’S KISS DESTRUCTION AND VIDEO END
Jin kissing the winged statue (some say it is “Abraxus”, the pagan god or demon branded by the Catholic Church) and seals his fate with the last scene showing the man in the mirror falling apart due to sin.
AND FINALLY the title of the song:
Luke 22:44 And being in agony (crying out) He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground (Jesus on the night of His betrayal)
There are two more music video versions of BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS:
*A Japanese version (WHICH IS ALL ABOUT THE BU (Bangtan Universe)
*A BTS homemade version filmed at their shared house which is very, very funny!
I can recommend it but I feel you may be overloaded at this point!😉
Regarding this post: If you get to post on YT I will make sure to share on there as well!
Fun review of BST and Thanks for posting!

This was the first Kpop/BTS song/video I ever listened to/watched.
Probably around the time it came out too. I had heard of Kpop and thought I would give it a go. I looked up the most popular group at the time and the most popular song (because I didn't want to run into a random really bad song that would keep me away forever) and it was this. It was a struggle. I had subtitles on trying to read along and listen to the music and watch the darn video and identify these seven dudes dancing around and was all in all super confused about what everything meant and weirded out by the narrative in the middle and the kind of distressing message it had... It took me 4 more years to rediscover BTS after my brain decided wasn't interested in getting invested into something like this. How I wish I stuck to it. But also thank goodness because college would have been really difficult with my current level of obsession over BTS.
