Paddleboard Crabbing | Catch Clean & Cook (My First!)

  • I grew up crabbing with my parents and grandparents, one of my earliest memories was getting pinched by a claw when I was around 6 years old- I was messing with it and it sure got me back (I never forgot it!). I enjoy the surprise of slowly pulling up a hand line and snatching an unsuspecting crab. After moving to Florida I didn't think that I could catch crabs the way I grew up crabbing. About 3 years ago I was told about a spot in Mosquito Lagoon that held blue crabs. I saved it on my map favorites. While I was off this weekend I decided to give it try. My friend Jon joined me and by trial and error we did our best to catch enough for a crab boil.
Thank you Davin, Dave, and Jon (and mom!) for making this catch, clean, and cook so much fun!
Thank you everyone for all the love and support!

Great video! Hilarious! Everyone eats them differently! Steamed is the way to go....lots of Old Bay on them. I usually put some vinegar in the water, just a splash. Try leaving the legs on and starting on the backfin, peel the shells away so you get a lollipop of crab meat......dip in butter and Old Bay....enjoy! Work your way up exposing the meat around the crab legs. Finish up with the claws. Remember, you don't get full eating crabs.....just tired of picking them:P I am in VA here....parents used to have a cottage on the Corrotoman River.....Chesapeake Bay. When we would go visit she would put out 4 crab pots the day before we got there. Mom loved cooking them, but didn't like shellfish. We call them Blue Crabs...but I like blue claw:) Sorry for the long comment:( Great stuff!

I could have written this from the way you steam them with old bay and a splash of vinegar to the way you eat them.. I live on the MS gulf coast and most people boil them here but my Dad and grandparents grew up on Ashley cove on the Chesapeake bay in whitestone Virginia and that's how we cook them

I am from Charleston SC and grew up on blue crabs. The thing is u have to get a whole mess of em to be worthwhile. But if if u get 30-40 u can have a nice crab boil and it's not that hard to get that many and if u know what u r doing u can clean em and cook em up,in no time and have a helluva throw down as long as u got plenty of beer and/or serious cocktails!!! You r learning and will get there eventually👍👍😎

FYI: There are stubby fins (4 inch) for paddle boards that are available for shallow water. Also available are crab snares that you can cast and reel in with a fishing pole.

For our crab on the west coast of Oregon when cleaning. We kill the crab right before cooking by splitting them with a swift blow on the edge of a bucket while holding each side of the legs in our hands. The back will come of easily and you can break them in half the and clean off the lungs and “crab butter “( yuck stuff) and extra shell bits mouth flaps and such. Rinse with water. Ending up with a much more appetizing crab halves ready to be cooked in clean saltwater. Dunk in ice water bath after cooking to aid in releasing the meat from the shell. Cooking whole works also but doesn’t seem as appetizing when cleaning after cooked. Flavors also get to the meat easier.
And of course only the live crabs go to the cooker for safety reasons. Killing them immediately before cooking is fine too.
Either way you will still have lots of fun!! And some great eats!!
Great videos thank you for sharing.
