I can't read "Cognac" without thinking of Yvette from the movie Clue. Many thanks for another great video. I love a Japanese spring punch when my raspberries are ripe. Will certainly try a Vanilla Punch tomorrow!
Man that Licor 43 is good stuff, not many cocktails with it tho, I guess it’s just too nice in its own. I might try some in an espresso martini and see what happens.
How many drinks from the 18th century made it into Jerry Thomas' book in 1862? Looked at this book on new england drinks from the early days of America and it looks like most of the ones from new england made it but some of em didnt.
you can shake however you want, but theres no sense in shaking vigorously and putting the strain on your body specifically because you are shaking until everything is melted. Also you don't need to aerate the cocktail so theres no need.
@@TheEducatedBarfly Thanks for the response. So, now I'm forced to ask the question, could it also just be stirred until diluted? That would take longer, perhaps?
Hmmm. Tried to make a drink similar to this but as a sour. Traded whiskey for cognac and added egg white and 1/4 cinnamon syrup with cinnamon and shaved white chocolate on the foam but it honestly just tasted like a sour with a cinnamon nose. Wait. There’s the smallest hint of vanilla. Thought it would come through way stronger. 🤷♂️ Worth tinkering with. I bet Applejack would work great too.
John-Ambrose Cox Licor 43 was based on an ancient Roman recipe known as Liqvur Mirabillis. That being said, the company itself was founded in the 1940’s. Nobody said the Romans had vanilla, it is also flavored with other aromatic herbs and spices.
Luckily you will get the episode. I've been dragging my feet about batching punch because, well, what am I gonna do with all that punch after I shoot the episode?
I love how you point out that recipes can change for the better as newer ingredients are developed.
Bought some Licor 43 this week and tried this. It really is a tasty drop.
Sounds good. Can’t imagine not being tempted to buy some 43 next time I see it.

Just made one. It’s delicious 😋
I just got Licor 43 the other day and I've been experimenting with it, I couldn't have come across this video at a better time!
finally got my hands on a good bottle of cognac and made this. fantastic drink. thanks leandro!
Is ist really sweet because of the 43 ?
@@c.s.660 Not too sweet, no. Remember that most liqueurs are drier than syrups. (Syrups are around 50+% sugar, liqueurs usually 20-30%)

I recommend Vanilla Bourbon Flip 🙂
Bartenders can all relate "c'mon c'mon just enough for this cocktail😬" lol
A great cocktail 🍸
Thanks for the vid sir.🥃
This drink is actually great! 🙂
Awesomeness!!!! Thanks 🙏
Sounds tasty. 👌🤘
What makes a cocktail a punch? Is there more than ten? Could you list about 5?. Im also gonna add vanilla punch to my lists to try.
I've been wondering who you remind me of and I've got it. Jared Polin - Fro knows Photo. Almost the same voice
Adam Anderson that’s hilarious!
could you substitute the licor 43 for galliano?
it wont be totally the same but it's doable
Love your videos!
Too bad I don't have such a vast collection of liquors, so I can hardly make anything
you can always start collecting...LOL
@@TheEducatedBarfly yeah but I need like ... money for that
Yeah that's the real trick
try the book "the 12 bottle bar" hint: you dont even need 12 bottles to start either
Can you recommend a substitution for the Licor 43? It’s not available near me.
Amy Johns simple syrup with a teaspoon of vanilla extract
Any cognac brands under 20?
How much for the liquor 43? Whats a good price range

What’s the other book you we’re reading?
@@TheEducatedBarfly Forgotten Drinks of Colonial New England by Corin Hirsch
Could I replace the cognac with bourbon?
What about Gailano? It has more vanilla flavour than licor 43.
But it also has a strong anis component too. That said you can use it as well!
@@TheEducatedBarfly Good. Sadly there are not many cocktails with Gailano.
SCP 049 there should be more!
@@TheEducatedBarfly Well, hopefully. Good news: I found the tiki mug.
Hey Barfly, have you ever had an amaerna cherry? If so would you sub all luxardo cherries with them? Thanks
Yes I have had one. I like them both.
How long can I keep a bottle of lemon juice like that one in the fridge? Doesnt the juice go bad?
Pedro Veloso I Juice lemon fresh every time we shoot I just store in the fridge between tutorials because i shoot a bunch every time we shoot
Unbalanced dry cocktail 🍸great video keep them coming!!!
Is Licor 43 similar tasting to Galliano Vanilla?
Not sure. I'm going to say...probably
Tastes like a Sidecar!
Barfly sent me that same bar spoon without ever buying anything(still trying to figure out how they did that) and it was bent like crazy 😥
If you can shake until all the crushed ice is diluted, why do you shake gently rather than vigorously? It will dilute either way.

Matthew Urbas I’ll just turn a question into you and ask why you’d want to do that?
@@TheEducatedBarfly Haha, no I wouldn't.. Does it in fact dilute faster this way than stirring? I was just taking a wild guess there.
Seems like this would also be awesome if you subbed that Licor 43 with Tuaca

Kevin Fager love that you’re trying new stuff tho
Where did you buy a bag of crushed ice?
I go to an ice company for most of my ice, that one came from a store that sells bags of crushed ice but they only distribute in California as of yet
The recipe for Liqueur 43 can't be made from an old roman recipe; since vanilla is a new world food and the romans didn't have access to vanilla.
John-Ambrose Cox Licor 43 was based on an ancient Roman recipe known as Liqvur Mirabillis. That being said, the company itself was founded in the 1940’s. Nobody said the Romans had vanilla, it is also flavored with other aromatic herbs and spices.
Where can I get a bag of crushed ice like that?! I gets old sometimes making my own.
jason frame I get mine from nève which only distributes in CA or a Local ice company you can check with them
@@TheEducatedBarfly Awesome! Thank god I live in CA.
Great video as always. Wish our introduction to punch would have been the classic rum punch though (that could just be my Caribbean bias speaking)
Luckily you will get the episode. I've been dragging my feet about batching punch because, well, what am I gonna do with all that punch after I shoot the episode?
The Educated Barfly have some friends over and drink it all of course!!
jsfourdirections gonna have to :)
Made this 5 minutes ago. I like it. 3,6/5 taste
I would cut lemon juice to 15ml, too much tartness.. Licor 43 it's not sugar syrup...
Nah. It’s great as is, if a little tart but it would be better to add a tsp of simple to it rather than cut the lemon.
@@TheEducatedBarfly that's a fair point :)
You could freepour the Cognac
If I took one thing away from Robert Hess, it's that a punch for one is a "fix." Odd the way memory works. Is this, therefore, a fix?
Profane Gaming just shot a fix today. This drink though is actually called Vanilla Punch not a vanilla fix...
The Educated Barfly awesome. Thanks and looking forward to it!
Never thought i'd be taught by Jack Black with cocktails :p
but where are the noodles..?
After 3 drinks give me the bottle😂
My favorite punch is gin and juice.. 1 part gin, 1 part juice :)
Seeing an empty bottle on a show about cocktails is just sad
i don't understand the appeal of crushed ice cocktails. we're drinking liquor...we're not children
Probably your most political video to date. Wow.
