    To me, the thing that sets Sol apart from many other races is the ability to win when you are ahead. For a lot of races, if the table sees you at 8 with the end of the game coming, they can conspire and take you down. With Sol, you really can spread out and spawn infantry, then say "Come at me bros" and withstand the onslaught to win in R5.

    "Jord" is literally the scandinavian word for "Earth", and "Sol" is the scandinavian word for "Sun". I think it's safe to say that the Federation of Sol are just us humans from Earth, in a future where we have finally learned to pull together towards a common goal :)

      The creator of Twilight Imperium (and founder of FFG) is from Denmark so likely the reason for using the danish name for Earth (which as pointed out happens to be the same for all the scandinavian languages).

    Ideas for fighting the Sol: Don't try to beat them in the infantry game. Focus on bombardment to target them from space. X-89 bacterial weapon is great for this.

    I played today, used Sol for the first time and scored 4 Victory points in one round to take out the win.
    Started out slowly but I didnt get in any combat at all until the second last round when i was attacked and successfully defended the system.
    Really enjoyed the flexibility this race offers.

    I think it would be good advice to sell your promissory note and make a deal with the opponent to use it when you are out of strategy tokens. That way, you dont lose anything and they gain the 2 infantry. Keep in mind that this wouldnt be a binding deal.

    I don't recommend parking a fleet or spacedock on mecatol. Once you grab it, plop down a PDS and start putting mechs on it. Very few methods can bombard that ground force. Then you keep your fleet protecting your territory/attacking others.

    Sol is a strong and versatile faction but it is hard to pull a win with them. The reason is the specific dynamics of the end game. Your strength is obvious from turn one. But when the crazy end game rounds start, you have nothing special to defend yourself. You are easy to get ahead but also easy to get picked on. And while you try to argue why this or that hero should not be used to wipe out your 30 inf. from Mecatol, Naaz Rookah just score another relic.

    I'm going to play my 3rd game this weekend. I am hoping to get Sol. But I've won one game and tied the other. I think the group I'll be playing with will not allow me to play them. Lol
    Expand and exploit. That's the Sol game. I remember I won my game by taking Rex from another player and holding it.
    I tied the other game and never set foot on Rex. I had good systems in my slice and ended up carving the galaxy apart with the other guy. I even top the Hccan home worlds. It was great.
    We ran out of time. I think I qould have lost as I wasn't in a great position after the Great Hccan War. But the other guy would have had to fight for his win. I do feel I was one bad decision from losing at all times. It was stressful, but so much fun.

  • @Camtrain1989

    Hear me out: Sol want either
    Tech
    Leadership
    Trade
    As their first three strat cards. Warfare is too much of an obvious choice. Let me explain..
    If you can take tech first you have the potential for 2 techs round one (if someone pops trade early and the table endeavours to play for neighbours round one this can make for such a fun game)
    Then you research AI development algorithm, and CRUISER II, not hyper metab (yet) or gravity drive (yet)
    Cruiser 2 has a cap of 1 and a move of 3. In most games it'll get you from your home system to MR in the first turn. If you can find a way to get enough influence (through trading, negotiating) from other players, which is easy to do you just have to point to the Mahact player, you can take and hold MR from round one.
    If you can't take it round one you aim for an early strat card next round, maybe Politics, and then take MR first turn and start orbital dropping onto it. You'll be a menace to anyone trying to knock you off 😅
    If you can't take Tech, take Leadership for CCs and look for a tech skip to leverage round 2. You can always take gravity drive or AI now.
    If you can't take either, Trade to get TG and 4 commodities and take ownership of the money round one. It's so powerful negotiating 1tg from people to refresh their commodities, ask them to pay you when you become neighbours or just ask them for a small favour later (VP priority, for example; you're both going for the same VP and it's early game - you ask if you can go first, move your units out next round and they can go)
    Politics can be grabbed if you're sitting immediately right of the speaker. It's going to be a tough game for you if that's the case though... I always treat that as starting the game a whole round behind.
    Thoughts?

  • @Eziomurzyn
    @Eziomurzyn 2 года назад +1

    Nobody would buy Sol promissory for more than 1 tg, because why would you pay 3tg for just 2 infantry to other player, when you can buy it yourself for 1.

    • @braydenswinhart
      @braydenswinhart 2 года назад +3

      2 reasons mainly. 1st is command counters, and this comes in 2 ways. You don’t have to spend your own or lock down a system to place these groups, and it takes away a cc from the sol player. Yes it doesn’t hurt the sol player that bad but it’s better than letting them use it for things useful to them. And 2, is movement. It states that it’s any planet you control so your aren’t limited to your own space docks, allowing you to protect outer planets in your slice. I do agree that 3 seems a little out there but I feel like 2 trade goods are a fair trade for this ability. Of course if it’s a charismatic sol they might be able to swindle some people for 3, but I doubt it. I think what CCC is saying is that yes getting a trade good for this ability is good, but getting 3 is the best deal.

    • @-Markus-
      @-Markus- Год назад +1

      Being able to drop them anywhere and without the need to activate that system can definitely make it worth 2tg, maybe even 3 if its really specific.

    • @bmac9090
      @bmac9090 Год назад +4

      Breaking down the full potential cost/benefit.
      1TG for the infantry
      3TG (equ.) For placement
      + They are placed out of sequence in Sol's turn so can surprise an opponent.
      + They can deploy and move in the same turn. Perfect if there is an undefended or lightly defended planet nearby
      + They cost Sol a CC
      + They don't take up Production Value if you plan to build in that system later in the Round.
      As you can see you aren't really buying infantry so much as flexibility.
