@@scottmerrow1488 Not true... I haven't gravel vacuumed any of my 50+ tanks in years and it's still necessary to use easy green... I do it daily VS weekly... thanks
@@scottmerrow1488 there ain't a body of water, pond, lake, steam, river in Florida that doesn't have a TON of extra nutrients pouring into them...! Farms, golf courses, home owners are all sources of run off nutrients...! Sounds like someone needs to do some research...!Anyway, good to know you're better than me and know how to type some jibberish...! Thanks for the feedback though...!
I think it's so important to understand our limits. I downsized last year from 3 tanks to 1 and it's been so much better for me. It's easier to keep up on maintenance and actually enjoy my fish!
So many fishkeepers seem to treat multi-tank syndrome and rooms full of fish as the inevitable endgame of this hobby, but I think it's easier to lose focus when trying to keep multiple tanks at the same time. I went from 4 tanks to 3 recently and it felt good, thinking about possibly dropping the 3rd.
I feel like every hobbyist hits that at some point. Every single hobbyist I know starts with 1... graduates to 10 or however many they fit in their house. I personally hit 13 tanks and it just became a CHORE... and I just wasn't enjoying it anymore (I'm a hobbyist, but a very casual one and I simply do not have 5-10 hours a week to dedicate to it). I scaled down from 13 to 4 small tanks, and maintenance on it was much simpler, about 1-2 hours a week. And I was able to refocus on the part of the hobby I actually enjoy: breeding fish.
Yes, I love that you show the tanks when they’re in their best shape and also when they’re at their normalest! Most hobbyists deal with all of these annoyances and it’s so great to see it normalized on this channel AND hear how it can be fixed up, or how tweaks can be made to prevent that. Creating self sustaining ecosystems is, in my opinion, the best part of this hobby. I’ve been in a bit of an aquarium slump for a while - kinda lost the excitement, but I’m trying to come back to it because I miss it. Like you, this has required some honest talks with myself and a little bit of downsizing, too.
I appreciate your candid approach to fish keeping, thanks for bringing this to a human level! I have gotten so many great ideas to try in my own tanks by watching context like this.
I like that you are scaling back and enjoying the hobby more. That's an awesome (and, for some, difficult) step to take. Best of luck and enjoy nature daily!
I really love the extremely low maintenance aspect of planted tanks. Especially heavier planted so you almost never need to do water changes, no heater, etc. Thanks for spending your time on stuff for us Cory!
Keep doing you, Cory. Whatever that is, whenever, however...it's you, and that's why I'm here. I learn SO much and you inspire me, when I think if you weren't here, I would lose my desire to continue in the hobby. Thank you!
I really enjoyed watching this Corey. It made me feel like there’s somebody out there that “understands “. That it’s hard work but it’s also so rewarding to then sit back and enjoy the benefits of that work.
That painting is so amazing! Talk about special and meaningful 😍 Lady Bird saying HI was the cutest thing 🥰 It’s so important to self reflect and do things you know will help create more joy and peace!! ❤
100% agree. Our tanks are also natural. We have all sorts of critters in them. Worms, planaria, scuds, snails, and of course the fish. The green algae is all over the wood and rocks and it is absolutely gorgeous. I love watching the fish hunt and actually enjoy their environment. It is full of activity and the fish are vibrantly colored and healthy.
I love these little casual conversation videos, Cory. I can certainly relate to spending so much time doing the things you must do that it severely limits the time you have to do the things you want to do. I really appreciate the tips and advice about ways to help it not be a burden. I've heard similar advice in regards to stuff like project vehicles. If it has sat untouched for a year just doing something as simple as dragging it to a different place in the garage, etc. can reinvigorate your interest and get you re-started on working on it. Same goes for re-scaping a tank or re-designing a fish wall or room, changing the focus of projects and tanks, etc. VERY useful advice. Thank you for letting us in :) Cheers.
I love these kind of videos. Seeing others working on improving their tanks actually motivates me more to work on my own tanks than seeing perfect tanks.
I know the educational videos are needed and they probably do the best, but the updates on your hobby are my favorite content to watch. Thanks for being willing to share the ups and downs!
Thank you for this thoughtful video. I just wanted to join those who are showing their appreciation for the work that you do. I discovered your RUclips channel a couple of weeks ago and have been watching some each day. I don't even have an aquarium but hope to get back to it some day. But I'm retired now so I need to be watchful of my spending, and need to consider what works with my family. Thanks again for the educational and entertaining videos/articles.
I love what you're doing for the hobby, Cory! I'm proud to be a long time member. I enjoy your realistic observations. Can't wait to hear about the books you read!
Hey! I really like what you’re doing! You show that this is an evolving hobby, and you’re never too stuck to change direction. A hobby should be fun, and it brings me joy to see you are getting the fun back.
These are the best videos! They inspire me to continue to evolve my fish hobby and not stay static...I work with the animals during the Sunday lives too. Thanks so much!
Yes as you get older it is no longer as fun to have to do more...I gave up on my Aquariums and only have the two koi ponds left ...Covid really helped me to understand what could still work and what doesn't. Thanks for your input.
Cory’s honesty about upkeep and too much being disheartening in the hobby helps me a lot. Thank you for sharing some tips on how to make the hobby easier. I recently simplified my filtration and I find it way less daunting to do maintenance. I now have more time to spend growing my plants better and enjoying my fish.
As someone who had his first tank at 16, and is now 61. I too have gone through the downsizing that often occurs when keeping a lot of tanks. The hobby for me, has been one of peaks and valleys that have filled that time. I too have read a lot of books, and I used to pride myself in knowing so much of the Latin nomenclature, and then the experts go and reclassify a lot of what I had memorized. Oh well. Stuff like that is of little importance in the grand scheme of keeping fish. Making it enjoyable, and less of a chore is always a struggle. That is one part of the hobby that will never change...
Love your content. I have been here for about five years watching your content. I have learnt SO much about aquariums and business in general. Thanks Cory!
same! I enjoy visiting your retail store in Edmonds. Its the best fish store I've ever been to in terms of friendly knowledgeable service, clean bright aquariums, well-stocked supplies, and so many varieties of healthy fish and aquarium plants!
I love seeing the real life videos of your fish room. It's inspiring to see you enjoying your fish and carving out time to just be a hobbyist again. Lady Bird is so pretty ❤
I like that you're letting yourself enjoy the hobby more, Cory, That will pay dividends in other aspects of what you do and what we as RUclips viewers get in terms of better content from you. 👍
Enjoying the fish room updates. Really cool to see the progression in the “day in the life of” format. Also I have orange australe killis and love them. Pumped to see you incorporating killis into your room
I personally love the behind the scenes of the less than perfect tanks and things in progress. It’s a tricky thing to get everything just right sometimes. Seeing the same struggles is reassuring that it can happen to anyone. Looking forward to saving my pennies and getting one of the lights for my 75 gallon. Going to be replacing a drop light t5 ho fixture that I recently converted to led.
Love the real life look at the fish room! Edit - your advice on what to do when you aren't enjoying your hobby is excellent. I have 2 specific tanks I don't love right now and I'm making my list. First thing that has to change in one tank is to get the tall growers out of the pearl weed bed so it is easier to keep trimmed and the other tank is to add a bunch more hardscape!!
I've been watching your videos forever and never realized how close your shop is to me, I plan to come by once I'm done moving, can't wait to see the shop!
Love what your doing. I keep thinking what is it that I want to do when I get more time on my hands. And I always come back to the fish hobby. I know it’s something I want to explore more into and I find it a passion for me. ❤
Would a show light, one you use only when you want to film or enjoy the color of the fish, be an option for Elmer's tank? I admire that you're using a growth mindset and restructuring your fish room as it suits you.
Thanks for sharing some of your story and thought process. Finding things to make the hobby fresh and exciting is a good point i'm trying to do too. :) I lost some of my favorite fish so I stepped back but there is more to discover always.
Ladybird is looking so happy!!!! I don't think I have ever seen her that interactive with you and showing off. It's good to hear you getting excited again about what you are doing in your own space. I would recommend Costco for light replacements if the bulbs on Amazon aren't living up to their promise. Our 5 year life span lights are finally beginning to go out.... 6 years later. Our lights are on a good 14 hours/day, so we more than got what was promised. I look forward to being able to order your lights soon... I only have one Fluval post house fire in 2017. The rest of my lights are shoplights (quick and cheap after we lost everything) and I am ready for nicer aquarium lights. Looks great Cory!
I think downsizing is a great idea if you are able to make your tanks look better and them be more enjoyable for you. Also I forgot how good the 800g used to look with the tiger barbs! Hopefully ladybirds tank can look that good, it’s already looking much better then before. Good luck with the tanks and your new projects.👍
always make it a point to compliment my local store for doing an exceptional job taking care of not only the fish but the store its self. go to so many places and the fish look starved and unhealthy but the shop i go to they're fat happy and know who feeds them
@aquarium co-op, Cory I’m really loving the fish room as you down size. It will be a relaxing place to chill and entertain fellow nerms. Also, your braces have done a phenomenal job so far. Your teeth are looking amazing. 🙌🏼
Thanks for the great video Cory, love your real updates of your day in the fish room, everything is looking great! I am in the same boat with downsizing so I have more time to read and put into making my main tanks better, love your content
We have the same track lighting in my apartment and in the apartment gym. Not sure the company but they burn out super quick. They finally replaced the ones in the gym, there were only 2 out of 10+ up there that worked. Excited to see the new CoOp lights going strong! I'll be getting one eventually on a new build. Love these style videos, so cool to see all the little changes.
Trying to know your limits is a good thing. I am trying to spread my wings a bit and expand. Seeing videos like this remind me to do it in steps so I don't over build.
I really enjoy seeing your fish room. Your platy tank with the pearl weed is my dream tank. But, I don't want too many tanks. So far, I have stuck to 2 tanks. I have enjoyed them for many years. Other beautiful fish are very tempting. I find it really hard not to get more fish. I hope you get to read often also, enjoy. Thank You!
What a shame to see all those tubs being broken down after you spent so much time and care setting them all up not too long ago. Looking forward to seeing what's next for the space.
I LOVE my Eheim 1500xl! I have it on my 75 gallon planted oscar tank and the maintenance is so easy and infrequent because the filter keeps the tank clean for months!
I have definitely noticed a change in your energy in the last several videos. You actually seem to be enjoying what your talking about compared to the last several years.
This video really hits home for me. I've had some struggles with my tanks. I started out with all these great ideas and ambition, and ramped up my fish room! Then, issues came up, and I attacked them as best I could. Nothing seemed to work, and it can be real frustrating to lose fish. I am at a point where I think the best approach would be to start over, at least with my bigger tanks! Defintely feel as though I personally would benefit from scaling things down for a bit!
I discovered Flag fish a year ago doing research on BBA. I came across Ryan from Wild Fish Tanks and order them from him. They did such an amazing job that I now have them in every tank in my fishroom where they "fit in" and can thrive. They are truly a miracle mower on any kind of filamentous algae.
Hi Cory … are your products available in Australia? I love all your videos and your no nonsense LOGICAL approach. Common sense is an uncommon human attribute.
Those trout goodeids are amazing. Used to have amecas with the yellow band instead of white. Goodeids in general are some of my favorite fish to own and honestly just watch.
Personally I like these videos. I appreciate the practical application type stuff. Real fish keeping stuff. I can usually pick up tips or tricks from just watching what you do. Thanks for everything you've taight me
Dang, I wish I was your nearby fish buddy, I'm such a noob I'd be learning as we did stuff and you'd send me home with some plants that were extra and it would be so worth it to help in your fish room for a day! It's good tho that you are scaling back to where it's more manageable. We all need that in this world, I think. I love Ladybird photobombing with her cute little smile when you were talking about the algae, lol.
Have you ever thought about starting a snail tank? Then you can add them live to lady birds tank. It would cut the cost of feeding her. It also would help the algae and reduce clean times. The ones that she misses could help clean the tank.
There are those channels that are all about scapes and show tanks but that's all they do. Cory you are running a store, an online business, travelling and filming your travels, breeding fish and so much more. We come for all that, not sparkling show tanks. Keep up the good work.

Just got my order the other day 🥰 thanks guys! You folks are the best!
I'm up to two bottles per month... It's the best & only liquid fertilizer I'll ever buy again... & again... & again...!

I really do appreciate and value your honesty and transparency in everything you do. Thank you.
I really like the cardinal shrimp tank simplicity, and the patience side of the scape!

Awesome update! I have Black Chin livebearers and love them! Not the flashiest fish, but still worth having in my collection 😊
By all means, find the balance that works for you and we will learn from it. And appreciate sharing you sharing your journey.

looking amazing. 🙌🏼
Cory is such a huge inspiration
When a hobby becomes a full full time job it like more work and less enjoyable. Cutting back is a great idea. Have a great weekend
Thanks for the great video Cory, love your real updates of your day in the fish room, everything is looking great! I am in the same boat with downsizing so I have more time to read and put into making my main tanks better, love your content
I still love the fish room videos. Always have always will. Thanks Coopy 💚👍🎋
Awesome content Cory! I love seeing someone work the hobby.
Learning our limits is one of the harder lessons to learn. But once you figure it out, there's peace on the other side. Thank you for sharing with us.
Nice to see you Cory! I took a long break but I’m back, gonna get the 55 gal looking at it’s peak and look forward to your videos.
Trying to know your limits is a good thing. I am trying to spread my wings a bit and expand. Seeing videos like this remind me to do it in steps so I don't over build.
I hope Oliver goes back to watch the chat during his stream. He was feeling so unsure and we were absolutely loving it!

Fun watching and hearing Ladybird eating!
You are a “Good to Great”leader Cory…Be well!
I have that book in my stack to read. Might be next!

I bet you could go old school and develop a nice under gravel filter for a tank and go from there. I think it would be a cool tank. Great updates.
Mann you got to be one of the best teacher in the world, thats Awesome!!!I never knew you had all that❤️🙏😍👍👍👍🤔
Personally I like these videos.
Your fish room looks so amazing!
Have you ever thought about starting a snail tank? Then you can add them live to lady birds tank. It would cut the cost of feeding her. It also would help the algae and reduce clean times. The ones that she misses could help clean the tank.
Can't wait to get one of those reusable bags! ♻️
Don't be so hard on yourself! You make the hobby enjoyable for a lot of people, just don't forget to make it enjoyable for yourself too.
that goldfish with lady bird is beautiful
There are those channels that are all about scapes and show tanks but that's all they do. Cory you are running a store, an online business, travelling and filming your travels, breeding fish and so much more. We come for all that, not sparkling show tanks. Keep up the good work.
