To anyone wondering about Happy Sugar Life -
From a person who neither entirely hated, but is def not a fan of the anime:
It is -- I will say that it is well executed in some aspects. It highlights how abuse and violence taints life, and how a positive outlook can create pockets of happiness in a world full of darkness --
I suppose.
The plot centers around a "relationship" of an adult woman, and a 12-year-old-girl (with other things added, to not go into too much detail)
Semi-spoilers,
They have a "marriage ceremony" [yes they call it getting married] every night, where the little girl and woman basically pledge themselves to each other.
No, they do not have sexual relations, though they do bathe together, but this is also Japan so this is not strange for the same sex necessarily anyways. Maybe.
Ane yes, there are *other* heavy sexual themes in this anime, mostly surrounding the sexual abuse of one particular character, and not one of these two main girls.
It is a very dark anime, do not be fooled by the title (if the picture/this song, does not give an idea of the tone of it)
It is.... an uncomfortable anime. It is short. It certainly has its moment where I would call it artistically executed, but given it is the depiction of a child [girl of 12 years] being put in the position of having to make extremely adult decisions (concerning life and death and safety and brainwashed ideas of "love"), then touting the results as beautifully tragic, rather than horrific -- and especially as a person who grew up in a home that was brainwashing and abusive -- it's hard to look past the excuse that "it's just fiction."
So, love it or hate it,
There are artistic merits.
I also definitely feel some themes could have been adjusted to be equally as potent without being so... pedo.....
