- I take a look at the new Trend Professional pocket hole jig, use it, and let you know a few things i like and dislike about it.... It's not really a review, or an unboxing, but i do unbox it, and i kind of tell you about it.... either way, I hope you like it.... I like the jig!

Thanks for the vid. I picked one of these up last week and it was helpful seeing it used in a few ways without loads of words! I've never built anything and thought this might give me a step into a hobby builder.

Hi. Just subscribed now, as im just starting out into woodworking and going to attempt my own van conversion so going to make (attempt)my own cabinets.
Im looking at buying a pocket hole jig and these seem to tick the boxes........can you tell me if theres much difference between the pro and next model down ( not the mini)?? The lower model is £55 ish whereas the pro is £115ish... is the bigger expense worth it??

The lower price original jig will only do 3/4” material with 1 1/4” screws… the pro version will do a range of common thickness boards with the whole range of screw sizes

Hey, thanks for really quick reply... i shouldve done a little more research before posting my question.... i was in too much of a hurry to order one. 😁😁😁. I just had a blonde moment last night and now know theres a tad more about P/H Jigs than i realised.
Thanks for heads-up with the difference between the 2 models.. it makes a little more sense to me now.... i think the pro is the way forward for me as it covers most bases then.

Looks like these are branded Massca in the USA . It very good value for the dollar, the only thing it seems to give up is the ability to change the spacing between pocket holes. The Kreg and Porter Cable 560 allow that but are the next step up in price. For most I bet this is a better fit tho.
yeah, I've seen a couple of people say the same, I think they might be from the same manufacturer. Which probably means the Massca one will be good too.
I've been reviewing several pocket hole fixtures, and this one is attractive except for one question I have. The plastic Kreg fixtures appear to provide angled holes with very little tear out, whereas the Trend (Massca in the USA) videos I've watched all seem to display a fair amount of tear out around the edges of the holes. Is it the jig or step-drill causing this? Curious if the Kreg step-drills come with a sharper cutting edge, which begs the question of whether or not one can use the Kreg step-drill bit in the Trend (Massca) fixtures.
So I’ve never heard of Massca, but I do Know Trend grade as trend in the USA, Canada, and all across the world.
My suspicion is that the drill bits are all made
By the same supplier. I have several kreg branded bits, and several trend bits, I’ve never had a problem with them for my work since I hide my pocket holes where the aren’t seen, therefore a bit of tear out around the hikes is to me irrelevant.
I will add that the drill but I was using was not new, by any means - sorry folks, I’m not going to bust out brand new drill bit for a RUclips video, 🤪 this particular bit came in the kit, which at the time of shooting this video was around 7/8 months old..... I don’t do review videos for quite some time after getting the item.
The tear out that is happening is due tj an old bit. Drilling soft pine. I don’t believe the jig is responsible, same as any home it’s the bit..... that would be like blaming your hand plane because the iron is blunt.
I have the Massca version of this pocket hole jig, and while I have never seen a Kreg K4 up close, I do have the Kreg mini pocket hole jig which is basically just a standalone drill guide for making a single pocket hole. I compared the Kreg mini to the Massca (which looks identical to this Trend), and the Massca has a design flaw that the Kreg does not. Specifically, the Massca does not have a "zero clearance" template around the drill bit because they use a bushing inserted into an aluminum hole and obviously the bushing has a larger OD than the pocket-hole drill bit, but instead of just drilling a hole in the aluminum equal to the length of the bushing (with the bushing OD) and then drilling the rest of the way through the jig with a smaller drill bit (equal to the ID of the bushing), they just drilled all the way through the jig with the larger drill bit. That leaves a gap between the pocket-hole drill bit and the edges of the pocket template in the jig, and that allows some tear-out. In contrast, Kreg seems to have done it the right way, i.e., they drilled the rest of the hole in the jig with a drill bit of equal diameter to the pocket hole drill bit.
Just bought the model down, looks very similar but doesn’t have the dust extraction (which is a bummer) or adjustment for width of material. I’m hoping it’s still largely as good at the core function of making pocket holes a doddle, would have loved the pro but it was nearly 3x the price, think I paid £55 for the regular version.
Nice to see you uploading again! I can only assume 2020 took it’s tol on your schedule as it has done for some many of us (I used to be a sound engineer!), either that or “the algorithm” was against you! In any case, good to see you back on the tools.
the dust extraction makes a massive difference to this! I have the previous version too, i did a video on turning it into a press for assembling turned pens.
I actually uploaded this all the way back in Jun19, could well be an alighting, I've noticed several things in the last two years, but all being said, last year was really busy. I spent 6 most of the year working early shifts at the local hospital, then finishing off an enormous sash window restoration project which should be finished in the spring. Kind of a strange year, but we managed to weather the storm better than some people - so can't complain!!
I noticed you used a hold down clamp to fix the jig onto the bench, what make was it, or what make is it so I can obtain one.
The one I use is a Festool brand, but any of the “tracksaw clamps”, from loads and loads of brands will do the job👌
Ok, so this is the Massca jig? Where is it made?
This jig is identical to the Massca M2 jig minus the fancy storage bag.
I guess this video and my observations in are fairly relevant for two brands of product then, bonus🫡
That's definitely a more robust and meatier unit than the plastic ones. 👌

Looks great does it use the kreg screws and drill bits... or do we have to use trend fittings
So far I’ve used mostly trend screws that came either in the pack, or that I already had in bulk (I have the old jig too), but the screws come in the same sizes and types as several other suppliers of these screws, I see no reason why they would not work!👍
I’d love to get one of these. Who has advice in getting some of these to the US?
have a look at the trend website, you can change the location/currency to US dollars, and it will show you if the product is available. If not, maybe amazon?

Mac Beath Hardwoods in Stockton Ca. usually has two or three in stock, so there must be a U.S. distribution network to retailers. I don't see them at Woodcraft or Rockler.

Something amiss with that drill ... I have their cheaper version and the holes are super-clean, zero tear out. Pity because that set up is very cool.
It wasn’t clamped tightly enough, flat to the board. It wasn’t the drill bit.
Also it’s veneered board, so a very different beast to solid wood, iirc

What kind of clamp did you use to hold the jib to the workbench?
it's a standard track clamp, used for track saws - most companies do them now.... they're pretty easy to find in stores these days.

This appears to be a clone of the Massca jig or Massca is a clone of this one.
I imagine that there are only so many factories in the world making pocket hole jigs, that many brands market and sell within their own range.
Cant stand pocket hole jigs but if i was to buy one it would certainly be the porter cable variant its a shame its only sold in the states but far superior to the trend and kreg rubbish, take a look and see for yourself
I’m genuinely interested as to why you seem so Vigorously “anti pocket holes”, and then at the same time why you would pick such a very specific version of it, whilst simultaneously berating to other brands as rubbish?
BrainFizz i just dont like pocket holes in general i have used them myself over the years both brands such as the ones i stated even UJK has stepped on the scene with there variant similar to the trend. I can see there relevance though which is why i suggested the porter cable as there is no set up for depth and the whole system is easier to use as it can be used in both orientations too.
Personally I see pocket holes as hugely relevant and useful, they might not be used by everyone for every job, but they definitely have as much of a place as dominos or biscuits
Presumably if you can identify their relevance, there is no reason why you don’t like them in general?
