Cam Cobb is the author of Weighted Down: The Complicated Life of Skip Spence - the biography on the legendary '60s cult musician known for his time in era-defining bands Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, and Moby Grape.
While celebrated by the likes of Tom Waits, Beck, and Robert Plant, Spence's life was sadly plagued by substance abuse, erratic behavior, and poor mental health. Spence’s story is the story of the 60s and one that has never been told in full until now. Weighted Down is a first-hand narrative of Skip Spence, told by his friends, bandmates, and family, and includes a trove of never-before-seen photographs. Cobb joins the podcast to tell us about this captivating story of Spence.

I played with Skip in the Lake Tahoe band mentioned in this interview. I was the drummer. He was a wonderful guy. Loving and generous. He called me , after he left the Lake, and told me about the music scene in the City. He got me to move there. He introduced me to musicians there. I played with Dino Valente at The Ark in
    Sausalito. Before he
joined Quicksilver. It was, for a time, a truly magical place… I owe all of that to Skip

Thank you Gentlemen for this interesting conversation. As a lifelong Moby Grape obsessive, I have found their story to be so frustrating and tragic because of the lost music these five talented men could have made together. Their story is truly a cautionary tale of how the music business can destroy it's own. Skip had the magic, I put him together with Sid Barrett on similar level as two damaged musical visionaries. Looking forward to reading the book.

Skip was quite a talent. When I hear him sing, his voice seems deeper than I expected, as you mentioned. Thank you for doing this interview.

I appreciate it that the author owns to a lack of information, re: Skip in the seventies. Skip was treated like Sid Barrett, like Brian Jones. Like Brian Wilson. I imagine he was impotent to stop this attitude from others.
After he left Belleview, he eventually self-medicated. Lithium is hard on the kidneys, I’ve heard. Also, I imagine he was more focused on songs, better without his prescription.
I have taken heroin. I did not know about Skip before today. I am also a musician. Thank you for this podcast.

Wow, I always try to imagine what its like to be in a psychedelic state as intense as Skip that day.

Skip stood out as brilliant even in a roomful of geniuses.
