There is a Jim Gordon phone interview posted here on RUclips and when you hear him talk he comes across as a guy who sounds pretty…together and alright. It’s so sad…his never being correctly diagnosed. With some proper help he may have been able to get along and that terrible episode, avoided. Put on Only Yesterday…and just marvel at his patience and finesse playing throughout that track. It is really something special. This is what I tend to focus on, on the subject.

I respect Steve's honesty here. So many people in the Seattle music scene back then being interviewed now would claim to have been friends with Kurt and I wonder how much they could have really interacted in such a short span of years. I don't know why Steve would want to join Nirvana as a second guitarist in 1990 when his own band Mudhoney were doing well. Sure, Nirvana completely exploded a year later but at what cost? AT WHAT COST?!

I was going to CCSU in the fall of ‘91. I, coincidentally/unsuspectingly, had called Fernando Pinto to book my local band (Frogboy) at The Moon at the time. He told me that Nirvana had just played there. It was just a couple of weeks later that I was following the pilgrimage to Strawberries in West Hartford to buy Nevermind on cassette, which validated Fernando’s excitement. He, then, went on to book Rockbar (which eventually became The Tune Inn) in New Haven. Frogboy opened for Mind Funk there. I also had no idea that Jason (of Mind Funk) had previously done stints on guitar with Nirvana & Soundgarden. I was too concerned with my Van Halen fascination to be wrapped-up in their world at the time. I suppose it was like a more modern version of listening to Pete Best’s lousy sound & wondering why WE were opening for THEM. 😂 I loved your Podcast episode & really enjoy all your VH ‘expanded-thoughts’. I live in NH but CT is in my heart. Hard-hittin’ New Britain.

You mentioned that you never heard an album blow up like Nevermind. Sad as it is to say.... Thriller from Michael Jackson was very similar in the early 80s. I was president of my 7th grade class and had to organize a spring dance. I had to combine my friend and my own record collections for the music entertainment. All we had between the two of us was a bunch of old metal and classic rock. Iron Maiden, April Wine, Fastway, Deep Purple, Zeppelin.... etc etc. Almost nobody in my class wanted to hear any of that. One of the other officers gave me the Thriller album to put on. I had to end up just playing the whole album twice. After that, That guy was the biggest thing since the Beatles. That said, Nirvana Nevermind was the biggest thing I ever saw after. I love that it destroyed the whole glam metal scene!!!!

Right on! I was not a diehard Nirvana fan, but I discovered them like most when "Smells like teen spirt" came across the radio. I was like "What the hell was that cool riff??" I agree that Inutero was a better album. "Scentless apprentice" is just plain badass.

I read Volume 1. Will consider Volume 2, but not the best music for McCartney. Though he did peak in 76 with the US tour. I found Vol. 1 interesting but perhaps too much detail. McCartney is not The Beatles, where every inflection seems to matter and we care about. Discussion of Band on the Run in Vol. 1 was most interesting, but I still feel that the album is uneven. Had Helen Wheels and Country Dreamer replaced two of the ballads, I might have felt the record was better.

It is funny you are talking about David Lee Roth kicking. I happen to be Christopher Lee Helton the photographer you guys are talking about and I got my big break in the music biz by doing kung-fu and guarding rock stars. We guarded Van Halen on several occasions back in the early 80's. The flying spinning crescent kick Dave does in the "Jump" video was taught to him by one of our black belts "Tommy Turcotte" when they opened for the Rolling Stones in Orlando, Florida. The blue pants with the white strip Dave is wearing is one of our instructor uniforms. Their personal bodyguard on the road was Lonnie Brown at one time and he was also one our black belts

The latest Judas Priest " The Invincible Shield" has given me hope that the metal I loved through the 80's is still relevant. Every song is well written and banging! That album led me to Ritchie Faulkner's band Elegant Weapons. Their "Horns for a Halo" record is stellar and equally well written/performed. That said, I haven't heard too much new music that has wowed me. I do know there will always be a place for a live show experience that keeps it all going. All that requires is someone to show up play, look and sound like they give a damn.

He can dismiss Whitesnake and David Coverdale all he wants, and then turn around out of the other side of his mouth he'll heap praise on Greta Van Fleet who actually sound more like Led Zeppelin than Whitesnake ever thought of. You never mentioned that though because you're amateurs and you really don't know what you're talking about which is my point. You guys think that you're experts in music because you turn your noses up at a band that has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and the album that you dismiss so offhand is RIAA certified 8 times platinum but actually has global sales of 25 million worldwide? Go back to sleep.

This is highly subjective. I can't stand white snake. I call them white trash. I graduated high school in '87. Yes, led zeppelin was commonly playing on the radio so were the Beatles and the rolling stones. But to call these bands led zeppelin CLONES? That's Highly subjective. Wete they influenced by Led Zeppelin? Yes. How could they not be? I still listen to Led Zeppelin regularly. The more i do the more i love the last 2 albums. Tjey just got better and better. All the more reason to mourn the passing of John Bohnam.

  • @frankmarsh1159

One of the problems with the Led Clones bands was that they lacked soul. The Zeppelin rhythm section grooved. Bohnham and Jones were huge American soul music fans "Has anybody seen the bridge" is a reference to James Brown...Also most of those bands got caught up in the new 1980s technology. The gated snares and digital synths, digital guitar effects, tons of guitar distortion and especially rhe massive arena sized reverb on everyrying makes some of those records sound very dated. Of course we all know what happened in the 1990s.

I dunno......grunge changed everything in the 90s.....conform or die. VH was one of the few from the 70s-80s who survived that decade, at least commercially. I remind you VH changed RADICALLY in the 80s going pop with "Jump" and other nonsense. They had to. So did everyone else form the 70s (Heart, Aerosmith, Starship, etc.) Sammy brought the goods. VH would probably not have done as well in the 90s, even with DLR.

Zep was the only band that had an hour in prime time rush hour dedicated every work day exclusively to them in Detroit. Plus a movie theater played Song Remains the same every weekend for about a decade. When Bonham died you would have thought the pope died or something.

Had Sammy been more of a "team player" on the lyrics, and Ed hadn't been on the beginning of his spiral, we could have had an album with the music to Humans Being, Me Wise Magic, Can't Get This Stuff No More (actually a leftover from Balance called Backdoor Shuffle), Between Us Two, WIthout You, and One I Want. Ed wrote all of that stuff in '95-'96.
