I had one of these. Absolutely loved it. It needed a steering rack the entire time I had it, covering over 100,000 miles. The mechanic kept saying "ah wait til it gets worse". It never did.
2.0 carina e, '97. It was regularly backfiring when I bought it, replaced plugs&cables yet it turned out to be oil leaking into the distributor. Replaced it & now drives great, hassle-free . Its quite a peppy engine, specifically when using the overdrive :). Fully agree with you, seats are absolutely great for my sore back!
My Nan used to own one of them in red and I absolutely miss it because it was such a lovely car and the seats were a lot more comfortable than The Yaris she has now😢
I have a 96 , 1.8 I have owned it for 9 years, it's my daily driver. These must be one of the best cars ever built. Not fast, but comfortable, roomy and so, so reliable. It's a lean burn , and fora car that size it is very economical.
Have a '97 1.6 Sli Leanburn myself that has been in the family almost 15 years, goes like it first came out of the factory. My old man was a taxi man back in the day and word had it that an early Carina E was the first car in Ireland to hit half a million miles, there was apparently a newspaper article about it, would love to find it some day! Will never get rid of mine, such a great reliable car!
Cars are so much more to buy, tax and insure in Ireland, compared to the UK. Are you from Liverpool? Now living in Ireland with a slight Dublin accent?

Early versions of the Carina E built in Japan before the UK Factory came onboard.

Many of the old taxis went well north of that in Dundalk lol
The uk built chassis number begins with S and the japanese ones begin with J
