I saw this in the movies-and when it came down to that last pitch, I said out loud, “C’mon, Old Man-write it on the wind.” When he jumps in the air after that final out, the whole theater cheered. No one can do a movie about baseball better than Kevin Costner. And the perfect effect here? The voice of Vin Scully-if baseball itself had a voice, it would be his
Absolutely and I loved Viv Scully because I grew up in Brooklyn and was a Dodgers fan from the time that I knew what a baseball was (from my dad who, ironically was a NY Giants fan). Vin was THE announcer although Red Barber, Mel Allen and Russ Hodges weren't exactly shabby. In the 1950s New York was blessed with great teams, players and announcers. I was nine years old when the Dodgers left for LA and was heartbroken until the Mets were born. As far as this movie goes, it's almost as perfect as Billy Chappel's last game. Costner is great as is the gorgeous Kelly Preston. John C. Reily and young Jenna Malone are also very good. Now this is going to sound like sacrilege but the one nitpick that I have with the movie is that there's a bit too much of Vin waxing poetically throughout the Billy's perfect game. It was pretty much non-stop but I'm sure that's what the script called for. But it was only a movie, after all, and a great one at that. God bless Vin Scully and I'm betting that he's still calling games from that big announcer's booth in the sky.
Until the let it fall apart and replace it with a soulless shell of a ballpark. The new Yankee Stadium has no character-very sad they didn’t take better care of the old stadium.
The film is known for the value of the game that many of its fans in the world love. The roles of this film were played by famous names that have a history and an imprint in Hollywood. Therefore, I give the film 5 stars, and I do not forget that the fans contributed well.
I love this movie. My wife is in no way a sports fan. I asked her to watch it with me. Told her it was as much a love story as it was a sports movie. That convinced her. Now one of her favorites too.
It didn't get great reviews, but I like this movie. Saw it in theaters. The music, announcer, characters viewing, and Costner's acting all perfectly conveyed the weight Chapel had on his shoulders for this final game. His dialogue alone on the mound was great, too.
I agree with the comment about Scully. Everybody always says 4:42 Scully called 23 no hitters in his day. I always say 24 because of this great movie. A little unknown fact, does anybody know who played the Yankee manager in the movie?. One of the most prolific College Baseball coaches ever. Fullerton State, Iowa and Texas. He won titles with the Titans and Longhorn's. Augie Garrido.
❤ this movie quite awesome reminded me of my own perfect game in high school funny story I wasn’t a pitcher maybe threw an inning or two or relief. One day two of our pitchers were in a car accident not serious but the both of them would have to miss a start a piece. Our pitching staff was already thin so our coach asked me if I could go 5-6 innings I said I’ll give you everything I’ve got. Blessed with a 8 run first inning lead I was quite relaxed and didn’t even realize I did it until I struck out the last guy 18 for the day. I was ready for another pitch lmao but quite a feeling won’t ever forget it my team also won the Illinois state championship that year 1997.
I get why people love this movie. I'm a baseball guy, played it, watched it. It's just a wee bit overwrought and manipulative, bordering on schlocky, but yeah, it brings a tear to my eye too. I will not, however, say it's better than The Natural or Field of Dreams, which I think were superior films. I do think it's better than Bull Durham, however, which I thought was a bit overrated.
I love the casting for the batter here. He is so obviously a young kid, 100% sells that this is his first at-bat in the majors... but you take a close look at those arms, and you know he's a threat. Its a weird aspect of baseball, a lot of players have muscles up the wazoo, but don't really look it in those baggy uniforms. He reminds me of former SF Giant Kelby Tomlinson, this skinny little white guy with glasses that, if you get a good look at his arms, could clearly back up his pro credentials.
After filming the scene where they win and, as the coach, he runs out on the diamond in celebration, one of the real consulting coaches told him a coach would never do that. He said he didn't care; he thought his character would have done it.
0:33 - Look at the score bug... That's when MLB on FOX was getting some tremendous respect for Saturday Baseball... they couldn't use the real one. 3:42 - that's showing respect.
anyone else notice how the trainer who is the only other person in the dugout who knew it was billy's last game wasnt smiling when the team ran onto the field
Anyone know if this was based on a true story because when I looked it up I didn’t find anything saying based on a true story but either way very awesome movie
It's strange that this movie gets left out of most discussions about great sports films.
Kevin Costner is simply the king of baseball movies.
Right?
@@thabeaststl3703 He apparently thought so himself. He went to that well three times.
This one stinks.
From the first time, I saw it, It’s always been my favorite baseball movie. It IS the best baseball movie.
@@TheSpazz888 Sorry can't really call this a baseball movie. It focuses more on his past life than it does on the actual game.
My favorite baseball film ever ⚾

I miss Ernie Harwell.
There is simply no greater voice for the background of such a moment than Vin Scully.
Amen

A voice kids will never know and it a shame
This movie moves the soul. Vin voice seals it.
Yes. but beavis and hutt head would be epic
One of my very favourite baseball, hell Sports Films ever. RIP Kelly Preston - beautiful beautiful Lady. You are missed.
I'd watch this again, but I'm out of tears.😂😂

Seen this movie at least 20 times and every single time feels just like the first…Teary eyes every time.
This gets me everytime. It’s a good metaphor for life. Just keep fighting…everyday. Keep fighting as hard as you can
“ Nice Job Chapel, gotta give it to you…come on clap for the guy”

Yep, we might be fans of teams but we are fans of baseball above all else
The cathedral that is Yankee Stadium belongs to a chapel. Gets me every time

Sounds like a line that Vin Scully would have come up with too. He was perfect in this movie.
Costner has always been one of my favorite actors. He always delivers a great movie.
Throughout the time of movies made, so many are great sports films. This is one I always come back to.
Check out Waterworld, you'll need to edit that comment.

Rest in Peace Vin Scully Greatest sportscaster Ever You Are Missed
Let's not forget the two broadcasters that were broadcasting for the Dodgers before 1950 that Vin Scully followed:
Red Barber
Ernie Harwell
I get teary eyed every time I see Kelly Preston. She was one of my first celebrity crushes as a kid! Gone to soon

Best baseball movie of all time.

"The cathedral that is Yankee Stadium belongs to a Chapel." -- Someone did not skip days in creative writing class. Bravo.
And it fits because it is without a doubt something Vin Scully would have said.
