  • A warning from California Highway Patrol officers about driving near the U.S.-Mexico border.
They say far too many drivers are missing warning signs and are accidentally crossing the border.
“We get it every now and then unfortunately its more than it should, it should be never," said officer, Jesse Matias.
The signs are located on Interstate 5 and the 805 and warn drivers to get off the freeway before entering Mexico.

This happened to me as a Canadian. I was new to the area for university, which was a border to the US. Went out to explore and ended up across into the US LOL. I knew it was too late but what could I do? US border agent was chill. Simply told me to go out to the traffic light and spin back. I could have driven off into the US but I am sure they had eyes on my like a hawk LOL. Canadian agents gave me the toughest time. Searched my car, asked me 101 questions, the whole nine. Finally I was let back into the country LOL. Then when I went to the US a few months later with my parents, the US agents asked me if I had been to the US recently. I of course said no, but they're like are you sure? I remembered the incident and said oh yeah blah blah blah, and then we were good lmao. Gooooood times.

It depends. If you have weed or a firearm in your car and Mexican officers search you you’re going to Mexican prison. Even if you declare them you’re going to prison.
Like in Canada if you make a wrong turn and have a gun but you openly declare it to the officer they’ll take it, file a report, determine if it’s legal to have that type of gun in Canada and if not they’ll turn you around and give it back, in Mexico it’s just prison.
So if you have goods legal in the US like say a firearm but also weed in CA and you get to Mexican soil and they search you, prison.
So it’s not an overreaction if you miss the last u turn chance and you don’t want mexican customs you need to avoid crossing the boundary

Here in Michigan at the US-Canada border on the interstate it warns you MULTIPLE times. It warns you about 2-3 miles before the last exit AND shows flags on the signs with “CANADA” and “USA” written on the lanes saying which lanes lead where. In Canada coming back to the US, it’s a little more discrete but they have a U-turn back to Canada pretty far up, almost to the toll booths.
Obviously people should be aware that they’re super close to an international border, but accidentally crossing without the proper ID can go on your permanent record and make it harder to travel in the future.

There should be multiples of u turn spots past even these two final ones. You should also be allowed to say u don’t want to enter and turn around at the gate once you have met up with a parson. Besides this they should have temporary dividers that can be moved and people can call the office number in case they made the wrong turn. This way the border agents can come out to where your vehicle is and move the barricade to go to the other side somehow.

Add some flashing lights, make the sign stand alone with no other signs or instructions accompanying it, keep it simple, keep it urgent, make it impossible to miss. Burying it in all the wording of all those other signs is not a good way to do that, even if you do put a yellow background on it. Now, if people still pass THAT up they truly are on their own with that one.

the u-turn is super helpful though. one time we were gonna go to tj for some food, but since there were a ton of cars we decided to use the u-turn haha

Mexico's border patrol is significantly more lenient than the US ones. In the past nearly 8 years we've gone driving to Mexico through Nogales Arizona, we've only been stopped once for inspection. And I believe the only reason they did that is because my sister who was 19 at the time (and looks younger) wanted to drive our van across. I suppose they saw that a bit suspicious and we got flagged.
