  • Just over half of the African American male population in New Orleans is unemployed, partly because of former encounters with the criminal justice system that make it incredibly difficult to find work. In the city, there are a handful of organizations that work to help prisoners upon their release through forms of support like housing and job training. "Basically, everybody in my community is in prison," says Dianne Jones, who heads one of the first re-entry programs to serve women in New Orleans. "As a black mother, I feel as if the system was designed to fail me here." In this short documentary, we uncover the processes and pitfalls of re-entering society after being incarcerated.

    My sweetie was incarcerated for 8 years and I thank GOD everyday for him, what a wonderful man. Don't give up on someone who was incarcerated.

      A wonderful man ...who was in jail? LOL. You gotta recalibrate your scale there. Criminals deserve jail. But a man who admits his mistake i can respect.

    My full suppport to these men attempting to change the situation. There is no perfect solution to the problems , but when you see the success they have achieved by reforming men , who would have certainly re offended , it is a remarkable achievement. I do not live in America , so obviously I have a Ltd grasp of the issues faced by the legal system, the police forces etc .... but you have to really ask some searching questions about the sentencing policy in a place.The long sentences imposed In many states of 20 years upwards for some offences rarely work . I saw a guy on here sentences to life for a third strike minor petty offence . America o believe has the highest percentage of people behind bars in the western world . The figures keep rising , so prison alone is not tja answer is it . 82 men so far in this programme who have no re offended . 82 men who are not draining recourses from the community . They are productive members of society instead of going round and round the system in and out in and out . I think it's about time more money was put into the cause of these offences and giving people a purpose to their lives. People with purpose give something back .

    Does anyone know where a person that's been released from prison can get help or a loan to help them with housing. Need help for a recently released mother with 2 children in Indiana.

    How judgmental some of us can be!
    Some of us have lost our humanity - see it in the comments!
    Many of us who have never been imprisoned as some of our
    brothers and sisters have been are trapped in a bigger prison of self righteousness, bigotry and hatred.
    May the loving God who extends mercy to those who have been released from prison and are trying to redeem themselves show those of us who have NEVER done anything wrong how much we need His forgiveness.
    Some of us who condemn others, should have served time in prison but the long arm of the law never caught us.
    We ALL stand in need of God's grace.
    Let's help another human being whenever we can.

    I'd like to start something like this for thos who get out of jail , . To get them off the streets . But I don't want to stop there I want it to provide help with employment either form in the program or for jobs in the community. It also will help get ides and ss cards, birth certificates. So that they have all the documents necessary to find employment and get drivers license. I don't believe on program alone can do it all alown but united there can come change . I'm ralee Kingfisher and iv been there , iv been to prison 3 times . And by the grace of God I'm not hi or in prison .

    In my opinion, America needs to STOP disenfranchishing the formerly imprisoned, and help them to get affordable housing and gainful employment; also, in my opinion, those who wrongfully imprison people should be incarcerated for the rest of their lives.

    i wonder what dianne is doing to keep her little girl from becoming a statistic. is she making sure the little girl studies, reads, speaks well and gets good grades in school? she can do this. once you get caught up in the system, it's true nobody cares to help you. but, the question is, what is she doing for her child to help her avoid getting caught up?

    • @orangemoonglows2692

      John Wolf
      yeah well. leadership is irrelevant if you're still on the path of having several kids, no education, have a bunch of kids who are incarcerated, etc.
      i'm talking about getting good grades in school, going to college and avoiding being in the position her mother and others in her particular community are in. could care less if the little girl learns leadership in public school. she can learn that in college, if her mother actually exercises leadership and makes sure her little girl is going to school.

      I why are you so concerned and wondering about what Dianne is doing to keep her little girl from being a statistic ? You don't know whether she's trying her best to make sure her daughter doesn't walk down the path she and many others have. Think positive ! Her trying to help other people out speaks in volumes you should be asking how can I assist Dianne not thinking or wondering negatively.

    • @orangemoonglows2692
      @orangemoonglows2692 7 лет назад +3

      *****
      it makes sense to wonder what she's doing to ensure her own child is not a statistic. her efforts are wasted if she breaks her back trying to help others, but her daughter winds up like the people she is supposedly helping. charity begins at home.

      orange moon glows the way u stated ur “concern” over her parenting comes off very negative, judgemental, and condescending. It also shows you have never been in that situation or have close family members in that situation because if u did then u would be a little more compassionate and not so negatively judgemental.
      Your attitude:
      Well thats OK that lady is helping other people BUT what kind of mom is she!? Is she doing this and that? Cause if she’s not then her daughter will end up in prison like everyone else so it’s a waste of time to even help anyone!
      How can you possibly be a happy parent or person in general with that ugly negative attitude?

      You must be a white troll who doesn't understand the real difficulties Blacks have had at the hands of systematic racism in this country. If you don't comprehend and don't have a historical basis for your perception, you should stop commenting and go to another page.

      we gave everything to blacks...money, political power, even lowered test scores so blacks can get into ivy schools all the while keep the asians out with perfect test scores. The issue with blacks is that they have an entitled thinking that somehow society owes them something. Where in the world can blacks say they have it better than the USA?
      They want black power and complain when whites say white power. I find that amusing. They want all black this and that....all black schools..all black businesses- well when you do that you effectively segregate yourself from the rest of society and complain of systemic segregation? Make up your damn minds-- you want to be separated or live amongst the rest of society? You cannot have both sides of the cake.

      @@rabidfarmer9765 Yet racism still exists. Not just blacks but Asians, Latinos and any minorities. In fact, everyone is discriminated, especially those in socio-disadvantaged areas. Notice how many people who are incarcerated usually come from socio-disadvantaged areas? Not saying all criminals are poor but richer people have the option to buy out of jail (bail). A dangerous man is a man who has nothing to lose, that's why intergration can reduce reoffending criminals. We have to do what'll prevent them from doing the crime again

    • @rabidfarmer9765
      @rabidfarmer9765 3 года назад

      Mmmh yes such memes - you are right about people who have nothing to lose as dangerous. That is exactly why you keep them in jail a long time - extra long time. People with rap sheet longer than my arm should never see the light of day. And you want to talk re-integration? How much of my tax money should i give up so a useless asshole can be tamed to not kill or rob? I agree with the Democrat Clinton/ Biden 94 crime bill - get them to commit 3 felonies and put them away for life. and i am not even a Democrat. Not a fan of criminals - death penalty for all of them who commit heinous crimes.
