  • It's 2023 and I've decided to finally get my life together. There are a lot of things I want to tackle this year, with my LEGO collection being a priority. I've never had a great organization system, but I have a TON of stuff that probably should be organized. Today, I'm going to create a minifigure organization system that will hopefully help me take control of my minifigs so they aren't just scattered around the floor.

I have four or five tabletop display cases and swap some out every now and again. The rest I have separated by “CMF” and “LEGO Movies” and “Star Wars” “Minidolla” and “Disney Minidolls”.

So, I keep my LEGO minifigures in separation drawers, and I’m sure it’s not this way for everyone, but it’s so satisfying knowing exactly where any random minifigure is at any time. I do have figures on display of course, but for the ones I don’t know what to do with, they go in the drawers lol.

I bought organizers in the craft section at the dollar store. Each minifig has its own little spot, each case holds 36, and they are MUCH cheaper. For labelling I use a label maker - it is easy, looks good and is fun to use!

Minifig sorting is a tough task but you do whatever makes sense for your needs. Personally how I sort is by breaking them all down to torso, legs, heads, hair, hats, etc and keep the parts separate so I can build custom figs with the pieces. Your bins would likely go further vs having full figs pilled in there. Also building your own figs are far more fun and usually look ten times better than the generic stuff Lego includes in sets. I do however keep licensed figs as is because they are more identifiable and valuable.

The sound of loose minifigures being rummaged through is like nails on a chalkboard. I bag them and then organize them in plastic bins: Marvel, SW Clones, SW Empire, SW First Order, SW Rebels/Resistance.

If you have a Harbor Freight nearby, they have less expensive, but very handy storage boxes too. But it looks like that ship has sailed.

Those bins that you got would probably be better used for loose min figures parts( legs, heads, torso ) and any thing that a min figure uses or wears not on a actual min figure .. also bins like those are good for min figure buildable weapons .
But what I would suggest is go to Costco and buy these shoes size clear plastic bins I think they come in a pack of 4 and go to any store that sells crafts . Your looking for where the beads are now you want some of those small plastic baggies I forget the size ..needs but the one you want will fit one min figure+ any normal size gear it comes with .. most of the time , For Example Doc Oct with his arms won’t ,but the min figure alone will ..( and that is why I put his arms in something like those bins you got at Home Depot..but I found mine that I use At the Dollar tree .
That’s basically my min figures set up

I feel like for me, a lot of my lego organization methods are all about function. Whenever I decide how to organize my parts and pieces, I ask myself two questions. What is the purpose of me organizing them, and, what sorts of situations do i find myself trying to find these parts.
For minifigures, your answer could maybe be, I want to be able to find the figures I want to add to the city. I find myself wanting to be able to find my disney minifigs for when im working on the disney land part. So in that case it makes sense to have some sort of larger drawer or organizer or whatever, with smaller compartments for sub sorting. The second question answers, how to group kinds or minifigures. If your lego city is divided into sections, then maybe you have one organizer or drawer dedicated to “Disney Land Figures” and so obviously youd probably put your character figs in there, but for me, I would also put figures like a hot dog stand character. Or an ice cream stand character. Basically, anything that when im building this kind of thing, these are the minifigs im looking for.
However, if your purpose was instead something like, “i want to be able to keep my minifigs grouped by theme, but i dont often find myself wanting to use them in mocs, i might suggest more of a minifig display wall kind of solution, or perhaps in the case of your husband and his star wars armies, baseplates of like minifigs in dedicated drawers. Something that I find really cuts into the fun of lego as a hobby is knowing what pieces you want to use or need for a moc, but taking too long to find them, even if your organization system is “pretty or clean”. Not having clutter is great and a big first step! But you will be happier and build more in the long term if your system adequeatly addresses your needs.
Additionally, dont always feel like you have to cave to the monetary pull of organizing systems that were invented for being organizers. I dont have a lot of space or extra money, so I spend my spare organizer cash on additional sets of plastic drawers, but then I diy my own compartments out of old lego boxes and other spare boxes I accumulate. Honestly, this system seems almost better than spending the extra money on plastic ones, because i can always custom make bigger or smaller boxes as my lego collection fluctuates. Plus, it means instead of pulling out a whole drawer, i can grab the two components boxes i need from the drawer, and also that makes it matter less if i have a drawer with a mishmatch of different compartments with pieces that dont really make sense together, as long as i can always remember the drawer the particular piece type box is in. That allows me to use up as much space as i have. Additionally, dollar store or tupperware finds are typically also way cheaper than anything at home depot, and they function exactly the same! Hope any of this helps. I know what its like to feel really cluttered and disorganized, but i recently realized how to make organization systems that actually work for your brain and make the arduous task of organizing very much worth it in the end not only because it “looks nice” but because it helps you accomplish the things you want mlre effectively and in less time!

I have an OCD thing where I can't separate my Minifigures from the sets they came with. For instance the Assembly Square minifigures have to be displayed on that particular modular, and I can't put any other figures on it. So the only minifigures that I have organized are cmfs or advent calendar ones that are individually bagged and then the whole series is in a larger ziplock bag

One of the issues with using bins is they quickly go out of stock and production stops. It can be frustrating to want more of the bins you use just to learn they are no longer made. So, I recommend buying way more than you need and plan for a 2x, 3x, or even 4x expansion.
