A benefit of zooms: if you've framed your shot 33mm, you can turn the camera sideways, zoom in to about 50mm and do a 3 shot pano to double your resolution and maybe get a sharper shot than the prime. I'm trying to whittle down to 3 zooms to makes things easier. The print at the end looks great.
Thanks buddy, yeah that's a great technique to use for more resolution. 3 zooms are all that's needed, like i said i wouldn't replace my zooms for primes, but maybe add one to my bag next time i'm out. Thanks for watching buddy 👍😀😀
Great video that printed image at the end looked amazing. I have an old 50 mm F1.4 which I love using when I get out to do any landscape although that’s not very often lately. The sharpness of it is amazing. Thanks for sharing cheers Keith
I have a bag of primes and since I now use an Olympus M 4/3rds system - they are really small and lightweight. So no real excuse for not carrying them. Sometimes I think one can get a bit lazy. It's easy to slap on a zoom lens for the convenience. Using a prime can also make you 'think', work a scene, and consider composition....it can teach good discipline. PS what wood did you go to. Now we in the UK are heading to Autumn I look forward to the changing colours of our landscape and woodlands.
I normally I use the fuji primes for my landscape mainly woodland photography. The fuji's are 16mm f2.8, 23 f2, 35 f2 and 50mm f2. Mostly I only use one or max 2 focal lengths already put on an XT2 or XT3 on a photowalk. I think you can get used to shooting with primes realy quickly. I my case only have to change bodies. The main advantages are the restriction of a fixed focal length best for easy composing, the better quality of the image and most of all the less weight to carry. I don not realy miss a shot that i could have got with another / longer focal length. To me one can make enough shots for the focal length you have with you, so why bother. There is always another moment. But since a week I also have acquired my first zoom lens the Fujifilm 55-200. For some tests at home I had put it on my XT2 and my god what a heavy clunky weight beast of a lens. I hope I will like it during my longer photohikes. :)). Perhaps for specific more planned moments I only will take one body with the 55-200 and a prime. Normally with my XT2 and XT3 in combination with a 35mm prime or 55mm prime and as a spare the 16mm or 23 mm prime I do not have any weight Issues. I hope the longer focal length will not be a burden :))
Namaste. Hello Ion, pleasure to watch this video, I recently started doing some nature photography with my 23mm 1.4 Viltrox and was curious who else might be doing the same. Your video here was the first I came upon that was nice and informative. Appreciate your time and effort, I subscribed and turned my notifications on as well..lol ! Will be looking forward to seeing more from you. Thanks again, much love & respect..
Very thoughtful video Ian, and loved the final print. I just wish we’d get some mist round my way. I’ve found that my Fuji primes have better acuity than the two zooms, but the difference is so small that for long hill hikes I leave the primes at home. In woodlands i always try to compose with primes and fallback to zoom if I need the negative space or compression.
Thanks for the video. When I shoot landscapes with my Fuji mirrorless, I prefer to use the following: Fuji X-Pro2 weather resistant body 16-55mm f/2.8 weather resistant Fujinon 50-140mm f/2.8 weather resistant Fujinon 12mm f/2.8 Zeiss Touit When I want pin sharp landscapes, I use my Fuji 6x9cm medium format rangefinder camera with a fixed 65mm f/5.6 wide-angle prime lens and my Fuji 6x7cm medium format rangefinder camera with a fixed 90mm f/3.5 normal prime lens.
Hi Ian, As a side note, I would (IMO) suggest you have a look at Capture One. Lr, for me struggled getting detail out of the Fuji Raws. I am going through my images again. Constantly amazed when reviewing images that I originally discounted are actually very useable. Question, do you any of your workshops involve wild camping?
I’ve shot Fuji since 2012 and don’t understand the obsession with C1. Yes the early versions of LR were pretty rough, but these days it’s quite good. I do see the difference in foliage particularly, but I actually quite like the Lightroom rendering, to me it’s more artistic.
Thanks James, Yeah ive been meaning to try capture one for sometime, ive found that taking the image into Photoshop to do sharpening often helps to get a cleaner file. Photoshop also renders the file much nicer too which is great for looking at the finer details. No I haven't given wild camping workshops much thought, maybe i should 😀👍👍
I have just purchased the 33 myself looking forward to testing it out also looking at the 85 mm for my Dog photography work. Great videos Ian really enjoy your style of videos .
Great video Ian. I have not seen many comparisons with Fuji prime vs zoom for landscape photos. I have a bag of Fuji lenses with my xt2 and the primes are stellar for edge to edge resolution. The 18-55 lacks contrast and really softens up in the corners. I have thought about the 16-55 but never jumped on it. That lens looks to be quite good throughout the entire zoom range.
Ian, it's my understanding that Google has discontinued the RUclips notification process. Although, I see they still have the bell for notifications. I stopped receiving email notifications on the 13th of August.
Solid post, Ian. First image appeared kind of bright for a moody subject, IMO. When using the vintage lens, in LR did you apply the old Nikon lens profile? BTW, YT recently discontinued new post notifications via e-mail; however, they retained “within app” Bell type new post notifications.
Thanks Paul, going for a more ethereal shot so the back light and mist helped to create that brightness, i've posted it on my website if you fancy checking out what it looks like when not on the video, sometimes the video can come out brighter depending on many things. www.iworthphotos.com/prints
Hi Simon, I dont have the 23 f2 but the 35 f2 is very similar in terms of IQ. Focus breathing is a big problem on the 35 f2 though, meaning its not great for video unfortunately 👍👍
When I compared my 135mm f/2 Zeiss Sonnar to my 50-140mm f/2.8 Fujinon with no image stabilization, I was surprised that the Fuji zoom was as sharp as the Zeiss prime at the same apertures.
Ian i got myself the viltrox 50mm 1.2 and it is exceptional quality however i used it once outside and due to it being metal the next time i got it from my camera bag it was soaking wet from condensation. Do you find this or have a solution?
I don't know Ian. For landscape photography I won't risk taking a prime lens rather than a zoom. Especially for mountain photography. I thought many times to add the Fuji 35 f/2 to my bag, but honestly with the 16-55 and the 55-200 I've got everything covered and the difference in IQ between zooms and primes is so negligible these days. What I'm trying to say is that I don't want to drive back home with the feeling that I could get away with a better composition with a zoom lens. Yours it's a good point of view though 👍🏻
Cheers Ivan, your thoughts are pretty much the same as my conclusion at the end of the video, I wouldn't swap them out for my zooms but i would definitely add one to my bag for a days shooting in the woodland 👍👍😀
@@Koji-888 also, the comparison here was made with the 18-55 Fuji lens which is still a kit lens (much better than any other kit lens around though). I find my 16-55 to be a gorgeous glass that can easily match Fuji primes performances, at least for landscape photography which is what I do! Don't have any experience in other photography genres. That being said, I love the Fuji ecosystem too: whatever you pick you know it's going to be great 👍🏻
I will get a prime Zeiss Milvus 25mmF1.4? and two Zoom lenses with VR for handheld photo as 24-70F2.8E VR and 70-200mmF2.8E VR. I have Zeiss 18mmF3.5, Zeiss 35mmF2.0, Nikon 24mmF3.5 PC, Nikon 45mm PC F2.8, Zeiss 50mmF1.4, Nikon 60mmF2.8G Micro, Nikon AF85mmF1.8D, Nikon 85mmF2.8 PC, Zeiss 100mmF2.0 Macro, Nikon AFS200mmF2.0 VR and Nikon AF300mmF2.8 IF-ED.
Enjoyed watching you and the PTC. Not what I was looking for but that's obviously not your fault. Honestly I'm not interested in pixel peaking. My 7 X 5 prints won't show the difference between your two lenses and probably not even normal poster size. I was looking for and continue to look for how different prime lenses and their focal lengths compare. So 35mm to 85mm to 110mm etc. Rather than comparing the exact same shot on two different lenses with the same focal length.
Interesting vid - I get why you pro's need primes but for us peasants £400 and up is WAY more than can be justified. It's like I said to Gary Gough - I might as well just sell my gear and pack it all in if everything is expected to be with "Pro gear" to get a half decent result. It's like some t**t said to me in Snowdonia "oh how quaint, your not using primes" - he copped a mouthful but I am put off.
Yeah the viltrox 33 is currently £212 which is an absolute bargain for a 50mm equivalent f1.4 lens. A great all rounder for lots of uses from portraits to landscapes. Great for video too. Like i concluded at the end, i wouldn't swap my zooms for primes for landscape photography, but i will be taking the 33 along next time i'm out in the woodland. It's a focal length that suits what i do and the slight improvement in IQ is a nice bonus . 😀👍👍
I enjoy using a fixed focal length, I find it much easier to find an image when I don't need to look for a variety of crops

Yeah LR really struggles with woodland scenes & Fuji files. C1 is a night & day difference.
I’ve shot Fuji since 2012 and don’t understand the obsession with C1. Yes the early versions of LR were pretty rough, but these days it’s quite good. I do see the difference in foliage particularly, but I actually quite like the Lightroom rendering, to me it’s more artistic.

Awesome, thank you! 👍👍😀
Good work with the dead tree Ian, pleasing woodland shot. Inspired.
Awesome buddy, glad it inspired you 😀👍👍
Just turned on notifications! Thanks for reminding me. :-) Great stuff and I love your work and presentations.
Thank you very much! 🙏🏻👍😀
I love my primes. I have a Fuji 16mm f2.8 and 35mm f2 and a Zeiss Touit 12mm f2.8
Nice selection 😀👍

With the new 1.4 XF LM prime lenses Fuji offers now. Out of these focal lengths wich one would you prefer for landscape the most?
18, 23, 33 ?
Exactly what I wanted to see. Thank!
Glad to hear it!
Interesting. I am now leaning even more towards going for primes for landscape photography.
Have fun! 👍👍
Use the XPRO's mainly and IMHO - especially when using the OVF - primes are the best route. Still use the 10-24 on the XT-2 though. Stay safe.
Thanks Alan, you too mate 😀😀👍

Interesting video... I have only a 'nifty fifty' prime as most other primes are fairly expensive in Aus... Keep up the great work...
Thanks for watching! 👍👍😀
How do the fuji 23mm and 35mm f2 primes compare to the Viltrox equivalents (setting aside the difference in max aperture)?
Hi Simon, I dont have the 23 f2 but the 35 f2 is very similar in terms of IQ. Focus breathing is a big problem on the 35 f2 though, meaning its not great for video unfortunately 👍👍
Excellent!
Do you have the 50-140? It’s an incredibly sharp lens. Wonder how it compares to primes.
Yes, that is the zoom lens i was using in the video to compare the 85mm f1.8 images 👍👍😀
Do you find this or have a solution?
yeah the metal lenses do get a little condensation sometimes. If its damp i leave my bag open to let everything dry out 👍👍
12:12, really nice photo, and I can see a ballet dancer in it.
Nice one buddy, thanks for watching 👍😀
Bell notification ticked 👍🏻
Awesome thank you! 👍👍😀
Regarding Lens sharpness and prints. Would the lens sharpness from all the lenses indistinguishable in a print unless printed to a poster size ?
Like you mentioned, it will depend on the size of the print, i think it would be difficult to spot a difference at a4 👍

The prime shots are immediately and obviously superior to me even at 360p on youtube. Am I wierd?
