Without a doubt this is a video that changed fishing for me. After all these years these videos are still the best online. My fllipping sticks thank you.
I love to fish in Southern Illinois where there is a lot of clear water, and I love using Strike Kings products. Two of the three biggest bass of my life I used the Rodent with a 1/8 ounce pegged bullet weight. Also the techniques you use on you show have had massive impacts on how I fish, and all for the better.
Karl, I watch your shows all the time and I notice you love pitching for bass and you're one of the best there is. What I want to know Karl, is why you don't peg your weights to the line? This is especially intriguing to me because just about all the fishermen out there do it, but yet you're one of the last remaining fishermen who don't. Would you give me a couple of reasons why you prefer unpegged weights over pegged ones?
I dont peg my weight because 1. Its easier to feel the bite when the fish pulls the bait, it pulls the line through the weight instead of picking the whole weight up, also makes sure the fish gets the hook in deeper in its mouth because its lighter than picking the whole weight up. 2. When the weight falls, it will hit bottom before the bait does, and will cause a slow seductive fall and bass may bite it on the fall.also if you were to pull while the weight is on bottom and the bait isnt, it will cause the bait to dart down quickly to the weight which may trigger a strike if the slow fall doesnt work. 3. when using straight shank heavy duty flippin hooks and u use a snell knot, if you were to slightly life your rod up the weight will fall down and put pressure on the hook, causing it to raise, and (if using a craw bait) will make the claws on that bait flap. hope that helped.
TheUnluckyFisherman Thanks buddy, you give me more pointers than I have hoped for. I truly appreciate your kindness, especially considering you didn't have to answer my questions. But since you have raised a couple of interesting info I've never thought about, may I ask you is it better to use a straight shank flippin hook tied on with a snell knot than the conventional method with an offset hook and a palamar knot when jigging?
Grand Wonder I use a straight shank hook depending on the bait. If im using something that is slender, like a worm ill use a regular offset hook. I wont use an EWG hook because i lose a lot of fish on them due to the bad shape of the hook. I tend not to use a palomar knot but if it works for you then use it. If the bait is thick like a beaver bait or a tube, thats when you use a straight shank flippin hook (owner and strike king make good ones). Anytime i use a straight shank i use a snell knot, even with wacky rigs. I use a double san diego jam knot for everything else.
Grand Wonder sometimes I do, times I don`t depends on cover I`m fishing and if I`m dragging the bait or fishing tight spots and want the bait to fall in exact locations vertically
+Tyler Mansfield green pumpkin with blue metal flake; bama bug which is green pumpkin w/green flake; and Big Tex which has a bright orange crawdad flake are great in stained or muddy bottom lakes.
johnny andrews I found this out just out of the blue one day you can go on eBay and type in soft plastic bass lures. Or panfish tubes . Cheap like 100 soft plastic colors of all kinds for 20 bucks or less
I watched so many videos of Karl, just one question my lake is really clean and and has a lot of Small mouth do you think the Chartrus rodent will work and there isn't a lot of weeds or lay downs
what all do you use the heavier line and rods on and which lb test do you use for your trivk worms, poppers and things like that i use 8lb fluerocarbon spiderwire for all my spooks ..soft plastics and poppers..shad raps...is this right
@extremeangler. I fish #50 braid in San vicente San Diego CA.. Very clear water.. I attach a fluorocarbon leader ruffly 3ft.. Do you think running straight fluorocarbon will increase my chances of catching those bass? I keep thinking these bass see the braid
You have answered the question already; if you have doubts about the braid in clear water, change to fluorocarbon which could give you more confidence when fishing. I use braid in certain conditions, frogs, topwaters, punching mat, etc... but when it comes to fishing for bass in clear water, I go to Gamma Edge fluorocarbon.
I was fishing clear water in warm weather at 12:00-1:00-o-clock pm I had a Berkley chigger crawl weightless and a yellow trout fly right in front of them but they didn't move or swam off and my dad used a white missile bait and they just looked at it like something stupid
It's amazing. I have one and I love it. For the money, there isn't a better rod. Super sensitive, soft tip, good backbone. Can't say enough good things about it
+Max Small bright yellow line helps signal bites using these tiny lures so far under the docks, it is impossible to feel the bites at times, so watching the line signal any movements helps
So many options, thats why I use them. Depends on what cover or structure I am fishing- you can pitch and let lay on bottom; slow drag with hops, hop and drag with short stops, they all provoke strikes.
Are you kidding me, long lake was a hotspot... I was told not to go there because there was hardly any bass in there, so I went to jacks lake instead and got skunked...
Good video... but ugh it just grinds my gears when people fish close to peoples boats like that. My boat cover has more rips from people then anything else, and I get a lot of lip from the fishers cause it's "public"...anyway good vid.
XelNagaStalker I do not suggest people fish close to private property unless they know how to cast, although, nobody owns the water and everyone has the legal right to fish on public waterways as long as they are not on private property
XelNagaStalker Yeah that's just too bad though. Your boat is on public water, you don't own the water nor does anybody else. 90 percent of time I am fishing weedless rigs and if I so happen to bump a boat with my lure it wont do any damage. If someone gets mad and starts hollering out of their house, that is their prerogative but I am not going to cater to lakeshore owners while pursuing my passion.

Hello, Great Video! Lot of helpful tips! Do you know of any Strike King Perfect Plastic colors that work well in dark water? With dark muddy bottoms?

ExtremeAnglerTV thanks a lot! And I just got some in okeechobee craw. What water clarity would that be good in?
I would fish those in stained water, but they work just as well in most conditions.
Why'd you keep it?
thedeuce98 Take pictures afterwards
thedeuce98 they all get released
Are you kidding me, long lake was a hotspot... I was told not to go there because there was hardly any bass in there, so I went to jacks lake instead and got skunked...
you should def change your name to Rodent
A 1/4 ounce of lead is the same as a 1/4 ounce of tungsten
fatalthought99 Same weight but different mass. The size of a 1/4oz tungsten weight is smaller in dimension than a 1/4oz lead weight.
Density, grasshopper. Density.
smaller profile
Terry Miller Right lol
Do you mod the rodents at all?
Drake Sallee sometimes when I`m fishing them as a trailer on a jig; shorten up the bodies slightly

the way i deal with it is start casting at there boat while they are casting at my dock. they usually get the hint and move on.
