The Cruel Fate That Awaits a Hornet Queen

- As winter approaches, hornets begin to ruthlessly purge the colony of members who are no longer needed. From dumping excess larvae to starving their own queen, once her work is done.

They do protect SOME of the larva, though. Both the queen and the colony itself is still succeeding in carrying onto another generation, they just needed to thin the horde out in order to do it. Team killing wasps.
When I was about 14-15 years old, I posted this original comment: "This reinforces my opinion that hornets are horrible little demons that do horrible things in their horrible nests." These no longer reflect my views today on wasps and hornets; they are simply little animals doing their best to survive. Yes, they can be scary and even dangerous, but they also help the ecosystem; they not only pollinate flowers, but they also prey on plant eating insects, controlling the population of herbivorous bugs. They are as much nature's gardeners as their more well-liked sisters, the bees. And like bees, they only sting to protect themselves and their hives. It is just hornets and wasps tend to be more comfortable nesting near human habitation than wild bees that leads to more risk. They are not out to get you, and if you are careful and respectful, they will not sting. All in all, the social wasps and hornets are undeserving of the scorn and hate they receive. They are charming and beautiful insects in their own right, and deserve our respect at the very least. They are simply little animals trying to get by in a world much bigger than them.
They're actually very friendly.
I used to keep a colony in a fishbowl and feed them sugar water off my hand.
Just thought the same thing
They're just doing what comes instinctively. Programmed by nature or God. Humans on the other hand.....

Huh, that explains it. One day I was out in the garden, and noticed a bunch of little white things on the ground underneath--then realized they were grubs. I never knew what the heck had happened 'til now.
